[Uncommon renal tumor in children].

We experienced six rare cases of solid renal tumor, which include two benign (CMN, MLCN) and four malignant tumors (CCSK 2, MRTK2). CMN is the most common benign solid tumor in the neonate. MLCN has typical US or CT findings manifested by multilocular cysts and thick wall septa. CCSK and MRTK are rare malignant neoplasms, which present characteristic clinical findings such as bone metastasis or intracranial metastasis. It is important for the radiologist to understand those characteristic clinical presentation of these tumors, because differential diagnosis is often impossible just on the basis of imaging.

[Adhesive efficiency of new bonding agents to dentin on bonding agent using urethane acrylate oligomer].

The tensile bond strength of new bonding agents on human dentin treated with 37% phosphoric acid solution for 60 sec to a photocurable composite resin was measured and the fractured surface was then observed by SEM. The new bonding agents consisted of various 20 wt% high molecular monomers (MW. 1500, 5000, urethane acrylate oligomer) as a base monomer. The best bonding agent was a mixture of 20 wt% 1500 molecular monomer as a base monomer and the value of the tensile bond strength was 91 +/- 17 kgf/cm2. The tensile bond test and SEM image of the fracture surface suggested that a high molecular monomer as a base monomer promoted the adhesive efficiency to human dentin.

Bioconcentration of alcohol ethoxylates in carp (Cyprinus carpio).

The uptake, distribution, and clearance of three labeled nonionic surfactants, 14C-labeled dodecyl tetra(oxyethylene) ether [14C-C12-AE(4)], 14C-labeled dodecyl octa(oxyethylene) ether [14C-C12-AE(8)], and 14C-labeled dodecyl hexadeca(oxyethylene) ether [14C-C12-AE(16)] were investigated in carp (Cyprinus carpio) exposed to concentrations of 0.2-0.6 mg X liter-1, using whole-body autoradiography and the liquid scintillation counting method. 14C radioactivity was rapidly absorbed into the fish body and distributed in skin, nasal and oral cavities, gills, brain, hepatopancreas, kidney, gall bladder, and intestinal content at comparatively high concentrations. The calculated wet weight whole-body bioconcentration factor at steady state in the fish exposed to 14C-C12-AE(4), 14C-C12-AE(8), or 14C-C12-AE(16) for 72 hr was 310, 220, or 4.3, respectively. Clearance of 14C radioactivity from the fish body was rapid, with half-lives of 30-80 hr. The metabolites of 14C-C12-AE(4) were also examined in gills, blood, kidney, hepatopancreas, or gall bladder by thin-layer chromatography.

Joseph's disease: clinical and pathological studies in a Japanese family.

Joseph's disease is a hereditary ataxia found among descendants of Portuguese from the Azores Islands. We describe the clinical and pathological features of 4 members of a Japanese family who were diagnosed as having Joseph's disease. The illness began with cerebellar ataxia between the ages of 18 and 45 years. Nystagmus, dysarthria, and pyramidal signs were early manifestations. External ophthalmoplegia, dystonia and/or athetotic movements, and muscular atrophy appeared in the late stages. Neuropathological findings in one patient revealed degeneration of the dentatorubral and pallidoluysian systems, substantia nigra, pontocerebellar system, Clarke's column and spinocerebellar tracts, and anterior horn cells, as well as the cranial nuclei in the brainstem. Neurons in the inferior olivary nuclei, Purkinje's and granule cells, the cerebral cortex, thalamus, and striatum were spared. Involvement of the dentatorubral and pallidoluysian systems seems to be a characteristic feature of this disease in Japan.

Morphological studies of peripheral nerves and skeletal muscles of an adult case with adrenoleukomyeloneuropathy.

A 53-year-old patient with adrenoleukomyeloneuropathy, showing symptoms of mental deterioration, cerebellar ataxia, spastic tetraparesis, and polyneuropathy, was reported. The myelinated fiber densities were decreased in the anterior spinal root and sciatic nerve. Most of the myelinated fibers showed segmental demyelination and a few fibers showed axonal degeneration. Electron microscopy showed numerous lipid inclusions in the cytoplasm of the Schwann cells. The muscles showed neurogenic changes. Numerous lipid bodies and intracytoplasmic crystalline arrays were found in the sarcolemma.

Aclarubicin (aclacinomycin A) and irradiation: evaluation using HeLa cells.

Aclarubicin (aclacinomycin A), an anthracyclic anti-tumor antibiotic, was examined as a possible factor to improve survival of proliferating HeLa cells following irradiation. After irradiation followed by exposure to 5 micrograms/ml of aclarubicin for 1 hour, cell killing was significantly enhanced from 2 hours onward, reaching a maximum at 24 hours. The maximum enhancement ratio, determined from comparison of D0 values (mean lethal radiation doses), was 2.3. Aclarubicin did not potentiate cell killing appreciably when it was given prior to or simultaneously with irradiation. Potentiation cannot be attributed to suppression of recovery from sublethal radiation damage, but rather is due to interaction between radiation and drug damage and lasts through approximately 10 divisions. A recall effect may be predicted on the basis of these findings.

Distal myopathy: histochemical and ultrastructural studies.

In three familial cases and one sporadic case of late-onset distal myopathy, muscle wasting started in the distal portions of the lower extremities. The most striking change seen by light microscopy was the appearance of rimmed vacuoles. These were presumed to be autophagic, because they were found by electron microscopy to contain membranous lamellar structures and other heterogenous materials enclosed by a limiting membrane. On the other hand, lysosomal activity was markedly increased in skeletal muscle. In 6% to 22% of affected muscle fibers there were acid phosphatase-positive granules deep in the sarcoplasm, whereas control muscles had no such granules. The degenerative process in distal myopathy may be different from that in other muscular dystrophies.

gamma-Aminobutyric acid system in isolated dorsal and ventral horn neurons from bovine spinal cord.

In order to search for the relationship between the structure and the function of the nervous system, the spinal cord provides suitable material. We devised a procedure for isolation of large ventral and small dorsal horn neurons. Then we examined the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) system in both neurons isolated using our procedure. Glutamic decarboxylase (GAD) activity in dorsal horn neurons was much higher than that in ventral horn neurons. Further, GABA uptake activity by the dorsal horn neurons was also somewhat higher than that by the ventral horn neurons, although some properties of GABA uptake were found to be almost the same in both neuronal fractions. However, we could not find any difference of GABA-alpha-ketoglutarate transaminase (GABA-T) activity between the dorsal and ventral horn neurons. These results suggest that GAD and GABA uptake may be indicators for cell specificity to some extent.

Smooth muscle tumors of the stomach.

In retrospect, we analyzed 12 cases of gastric smooth muscle tumor, nine cases of leiomyomas and three of leiomyosarcomas. In only half the number of these patients was an adequate preoperative diagnosis made. Ulceration of the tumor apparently led to the misjudgment in some cases. Features more relevant to leiomyosarcoma than to leiomyoma were findings of a larger size, exogastric growth, ulceration and tumor in patients over 50 years of age. It is stressed that enucleation is the treatment of choice for leiomyoma and an extensive gastrectomy for cases of leiomyosarcoma.

Three cases of early stage carcinoma of the gallbladder.

Three cases of early stage carcinoma of the gallbladder are reported. In two cases, radiolucent shadow was demonstrated on cholecystogram. The masses were papillary adenomas with foci of adenocarcinoma. In the third case, the cholecystogram did not reveal particular findings except for shadows of numerous tiny gallstones. The malignancy was completely unexpected clinically, even after gross inspection of the organ. It was an incidental finding of microscopic examination, which disclosed abundant Rokitansky-Aschoff's sinuses associated with foci of cytologically malignant cells in the muscular layer. It was explained as malignant change of epithelium on one of the sinuses. All three patients underwent simple cholecystectomy. So far they have been free from evidence of metastasis or recurrence. The diagnosis and treatment of early carcinoma of the gallbladder are discussed.
