[Mesodermal dysgenesis].

The authors present an account on a 12-year-old girl with ectomesodermal dysgenesis of the Rieger type syndrome. The disease was manifested at the age of nine months by transient diffuse corneal opacity, while the intraocular pressure was normal. In addition to typical corneal changes and changes in the angle of the chamber other associated somatic symptoms included megalocornea, high myoptic astigmatism, cleft soft palate, hypoplasia of the upper jaw, partial anodontia, marked thoracic kyphosis, scoliosis, generalized hypermobility and taxicity of the joints and torticollis. Examination revealed an uncommon pathological karyotype 46, XX, t/1,4 (p36, q23). Cytogenetic examination of the parents and siblings of the proband did not disclose any numerical or structural aberrations. The authors reflect on possible causes of the development of the disease and on the differential diagnosis.

Abnormalities, Multiple

Ultrastructure of human uveal melanomas cultivated in vitro.

Ultrastructural characteristics of four mixed-cell type human uveal melanomas cultivated in vitro were described. The authors stress the significance of melanosome microtubules in the process of melaninisation. They also stress the significance of smooth membraness for the formation of premelanosomes. The question of differentiation between melanocytes and lysosomes in ultrastructure is discussed.

Cells, Cultured

A freeze-etch study of occurrence of nuclear pores in normal and tumor cells.

A freeze-etch study of nuclear pores performed on human lymphocytes, epidermal and corneal cells, on hamster fibroblasts, on rat and hamster sarcoma cells and cells from a human malignant melanoma, revealed that the frequency of pores as a part of very important biological cellular structures increases in proliferating cells, and that there is a statistically significand difference between normal and tumor cells. Once produced the pores maintain and their frequency practically does not change. The pores are randomly distributed on the nuclear envelope. Markham rotating method revealed an octa- or nonaedric outside shape of the pores and round inner margin with eight or nine granules. One bigger granule was found in the center of the pores. The granule is with a great probability filamentously attached to the margin of the pore. Fibrillar structures running to the pores on inner surface of nuclear envelope as far as the chemical composition of granules need special cytochemical examinations.
