The effects of adenosine on stimulation-evoked 3H-efflux from perfused mesenteric arteries pretreated with 3H-norepinephrine and on norepinephrine-induced contractile responses of the thoracic aorta before and after mechanical removal of endothelial cells were examined in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) compared with Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). Adenosine inhibited the stimulation-evoked 3H-efflux; this inhibitory effect was smaller in young and adult SHR than age-matched WKY. Mechanical removal of endothelial cells rendered the SHR aorta much less responsive to adenosine, while in the WKY aorta endothelial removal had no influence on the relaxation response to adenosine. These results support the hypothesis that pre-synaptic factors are contributory whereas endothelial factors are compensatory to hypertension in SHR.

Even nowadays, early gastric carcinoma of the cardiac portion still presents numerous diagnostic and pathological problems. Fifteen cases of early cancer of the cardiac portion were resected in the past 16 years. In order to clarify their characteristics, we carried out a comparison between the cardiac portion and the upper 3rd portion. The results were as follows: 1) There were cases of IIc type on the gross appearance of the cardiac portion. 2) As for the histological type, here were 14 cases of the differentiated type. on the other hand, there were 40% of the undifferentiated type of the upper 3rd portion. 3) Ten cases of early carcinoma of the cardiac portion had the lesion in the cardiac zone, while most of the early cancer of the upper 3rd portion had a strong connection with the fundic cone.
Nineteen patients with solitary minute carcinoma (single cases) and 16 with foci of minute cancer, found as a component of multiple early gastric carcinoma (multiple cases) were studied. The results were as follows; 1) The histological type of the single cases was the differentiated type in 95%. 2) All lesions of the multiple cases were mucosal invasive carcinoma, while 16% of the single cases (3/19) had submucosal invasive carcinoma. 3) As for the distribution of the single and multiple cases according to the surrounding mucosal atrophy, the single eases were in the pyloric gland zone, the multiple cases in the intermediate zone.
By repeated backcrosses of influenza virus A/Aichi/2/68 (H3N2) with B/Yamagata/1/73 in MDCK cells, a virus clone with HA of B serotype (clone B/610B5B/201, or clone 201) was obtained, which formed sharp plaques in MDCK cells and induced a severe cell lysis early after infection. Its structural proteins were indistinguishable from those of B/Yamagata. Electrophoresis of the RNA of the clone also showed an identical pattern to that of B/Yamagata except RNA segment 8 (NS gene), which migrated faster than the corresponding segment of B/Yamagata in a 2.8% polyacrylamide gel. Within the clone 201-infected MDCK cells, only one species of nonstructural (NS) polypeptide was demonstrable, which had the same electrophoretic mobility as NS2 of B/Yamagata, and any band which might be taken as the counterpart of NS1 of B/Yamagata was not detectable on the gel. Peptide mapping revealed that NS of clone 201 was structurally different from either NS1 or NS2 of wild-type B/Yamagata. NS gene and its function of clone 201 was successfully transferred to B/Lee/40 by genetic reassortment.
Ceftriaxone (CTRX) was examined in the blood level and urinary excretion between a healthy group of 2 persons receiving 1 g CTRX for 1 day and the other of 3 patients with renal failure receiving 1 g for 3 days, both by intravenous injection or intravenous drip infusion. In the healthy group, the blood half-life time of CTRX was 6.0 hours in 1 person and 8.2 hours in the other, being 7.1 hours on average. The mean blood level in the healthy group was 199 micrograms/ml at peak and was 13 micrograms/ml at 24 hours after administration. In patients with renal failure, the peak blood level ranged from 136.8 to 161.1 micrograms/ml on the 1st day, from 163.1 to 217.0 micrograms/ml on the 2nd day and from 156.4 to 189.7 micrograms/ml on the 3rd day, showing no tendency of getting higher, while the bottom level did from 15.2 to 47.4 micrograms/ml on the 1st day, from 23.3 to 67.9 micrograms/ml on the 2nd day and from 10.9 to 72.6 micrograms/ml on the 3rd day. The urinary excretion rate was 54.6 +/- 3.7% on average in the healthy group while it ranged from 13.7 +/- 1.8 to 27.9 +/- 7.9% in the patient group. CTRX was effective especially against E. coli among the strains clinically isolated from the patients with renal failure. No side effects were observed in any case.
In patients with multiple gastric cancer and superficial spreading type gastric carcinoma (abbreviated as S.S.C.) accompanied by IIb, the remnant stomach is sometimes cancer positive. Our study population consisted of 44 patients with multiple early gastric cancer and 63 patients with depressed type S.S.C. The gastric mucosa was classified into 3 types according to the surrounding mucosal atrophy, 1) pyloric gland zone, 2) intermediate zone, 3) fundic gland zone. All lesions of multiple early gastric cancer and S.S.C. were located in the pyloric gland zone or the intermediate zone. The depressed type S.S.C. did not invade the fundic gland zone. Therefore, knowledge about the extend++ of surrounding mucosal atrophy is required for the proper diagnosis of early gastric cancer and the surgeon must recognize the relationship between the glandular border line and resection line.
In the isolated heart of the bullfrog, both the spontaneous contractile force of the atrium and the electrically-induced contractile force of the ventricle were enhanced by the initial administration of methamphetamine. However, a second administration of the drug caused a dose-dependent negative inotropic effect. The methamphetamine-induced positive inotropic effect was reduced or abolished by either practolol or cocaine pre-treatment. The negative inotropic effect of methamphetamine was markedly attenuated after theophylline or practolol pre-treatment, but was not affected by cocaine, atropine and phentolamine pre-treatment. Methamphetamine caused a slight decrease of the adenylatecyclase activity of the intact myocardium. It also inhibited not only the cardiac excitation (contractile force and rate) but also the facilitation of adenylatecyclase activity induced by isoproterenol. A slight reduction of the methamphetamine-induced ventricular inhibition was observed by increasing the external calcium concentration; however, the inhibition was not affected by MnCl2 or verapamil pre-treatment. From these results, it is suggested that the inhibitory effect of methamphetamine on the heart may be produced through the blocking of post-synaptic beta-adrenoceptors.
Cardiac function was studied with Scintiview in 107 cases, 24 normal and 83 affected cases, and the following results were obtained. 1. Better data were obtained with converging collimeter than with parallel collimeter in cardiac study. (2) Red blood cells were sufficiently labeled with 99mTc using stannous chloride as reductant, and it was proven to be applicable to measurement of circulation blood volume. (3) Pulmonary circulation time and the systemic circulation time calculated from time activity curve, greater than 9.0 seconds and greater than 25 seconds, respectively, were considered abnormal prolongation. (4) Cardiac output index (cardiac output/circulation blood volume), less than 1.10 was considered decreased cardiac output. (5) Stroke volume index ((stroke volume/circulation blood volume)x 100, less than 1.70 was considered decreased stroke volume. (6) Ejection fraction, less than 60% was considered decreased left ventricular wall motion. (7) Cardiac function index (cardiac output index X ejection fraction), less than 80 was considered decreased cardiac performance.

In isolated splenic capsules of mouse, rat, guinea pig, rabbit, cat and dog, either a single or a cumulative dose of l- and dl-isoproterenol at a concentration higher than l0(-9) M, induced a relaxation which was inhibited or blocked with pretreatment of 10(-5) M propranolol. At a concentration of 5 x 10(-6) M to 10(-5) M 1- and dl-isoproterenol, an inverse contraction was induced, and such response was prevented or reversed to one of relaxation in the presence of 10(-5) M phentolamine. Application of 10(-5) M epinephrine produced a strong contraction and such was reversed to one of relaxation after addition of 10(-4) M phentolamine. This relaxation was reduced or blocked with pretreatment of 10(-5) M propranolol. Thus, it was confirmed that both alpha- and beta-receptors exist in the splenic capsule area of these different species.
