[Influence of Lp(a) on restenosis after coronary angioplasty].

We clarified the relationship between lipoprotein (a) concentration and restenosis after coronary angioplasty (PTCA). The lipoprotein (a) concentration in patients with restenosis after PTCA was significantly higher than in patients without restenosis after PTCA (33.0 +/- 19.8 mg/dl vs 19.1 +/- 17.4 mg/dl, p less than 0.05]. Moreover, patients with a lipoprotein (a) concentration of more than 30 mg/dl had a high rate of restenosis after PTCA. Restenosis after PTCA is related to lipoprotein (a) concentration.

High-pressure laser photolysis study of hemoproteins. Effects of pressure on carbon monoxide binding dynamics for R- and T-state hemoglobins.

The bimolecular association reaction of carbon monoxide to human adult hemoglobin at pH 7, 20 degrees C, was examined as a function of pressure up to 1500 bar by means of high-pressure laser photolysis. The apparent quantum yield for a millisecond recombination reaction decreased with pressure, which was attributed to an increase in the fraction of nanosecond geminate recombination reaction. On the basis of the pressure dependence of the recombination rate, the activation volumes at normal pressure for the binding of carbon monoxide to the R- and T-state hemoglobins were determined as -9.0 +/- 0.7 and -31.7 +/- 2.4 cm3 mol-1, respectively. Since the activation volumes for the overall CO association reaction were negative, it seems that the iron-ligand bond formation process mainly contributes to the rate-limiting step for both quaternary structures. The characteristic pressure dependence of the activation volume was observed for the R-state Hb but not for the T-state Hb. At 1000 bar, the activation volume for the R-state Hb was reduced to nearly zero, probably resulting from the contribution of the ligand migration process to the rate-limiting step. The effect of pressure on the activation enthalpy and entropy was also extracted from the data.

[Clinical evaluation of severe idiopathic tricuspid regurgitation].

This study clarified the clinical profile and echocardiographic findings of severe idiopathic tricuspid regurgitation (TR). Among 8,538 consecutive ultrasonic examinations, a total of 63 patients had severe TR, which was depicted by color flow mapping as a regurgitant signal more than 4 cm from the tricuspid valve orifice. Thirteen of the 63 patients had no underlying diseases, and these patients with severe idiopathic TR were the subjects of the present study. All 13 patients were over 66 years of age (mean 77.3 +/- 5.6 years old) and had had episodes of right heart failure which responded effectively to diuretics. All 13 patients had atrial fibrillation. Using two-dimensional echocardiography, thickening (77%), prolapse (69%) and malaligned coaptation (54%) of the tricuspid valves were observed. The tricuspid annular diameters, cross-sectional areas of the right and left atria and the right ventricular end-diastolic dimensions were significantly greater than those of the age-and-gender-matched lone atrial fibrillation group and the normal control group (p less than 0.01). The left ventricular dimension and ejection fraction did not differ from those of the matched lone atrial fibrillation group. Other valvular regurgitations were also detected (AR 77%, MR 100%, PR 69%), but the degrees of regurgitation were minimal. We proposed severe TR with tricuspid annular dilatation, right atrial and right ventricular dilatation observed in the aged as a distinct cardiac disease entity.

Biochemical and immunological studies of angiotensin converting enzymes from human, bovine, dog, hog, rabbit, rat and sheep kidneys.

1. Molecular and kinetic properties of angiotensin converting enzymes from seven different species' kidneys were similar concerning apparent molecular weight, heat sensitivity, Km value, optimum pH, activation by chloride ion, and inhibition by specific converting enzyme inhibitors (captopril and SA 446). 2. Rabbit antibody against pure human kidney enzyme cross-reacted partially with each animal kidney enzyme except for the rabbit enzyme. Antigenic determinants of animal enzymes were variable from species to species and differed from those of the human enzyme in extent and specificity.

[Production of 67Ga, 68Ga by bombardment of natural zinc target with alpha and 3He particles (author's transl)].

In order to determine the optimum irradiation condition for the production of 67Ga and 68Ga, used in nuclear medicine, excitation function and thick-target yield curves were obtained for alpha and helium-3 reactions of natural zinc. With the initial alpha energy of 25 MeV, the thick-target yield of 67Ga was found to be 165 muCi/muA.hr at the end of bombardment and the 66Ga contamination could be reduced to less than 1% after about 3 days of cooling. 68Ga could be obtained by milking from 68Ge. With the alpha energy range of 17-40 MeV, the thick-target yield of 68Ga was 1.2 muCi/muA.hr at the end of bombardment.
