Electron microscopy of E-rosette-forming leukemic monocytes in a child with acute monocytic leukemia.

A 7-year-old boy with acute monocytic leukemia (AMoL) had leukemic monocytes that formed spontaneous rosettes with sheep red blood cells (E-rosette). The E-rosette formation was observed in 75% of leukemic monocytes at 4 C and in 37% at 37 C. Cytochemical and ultrastructural studies confirmed that the rosette-forming cells were leukemic monocytes. The leukemic monocytes attached to the red blood cells at a portion of their surface and did not show any phagocytic processes at the electron microscopic level. The data from this patient seem to indicate that in a rare case of AMoL, abnormal myeloid lymphoid stem cells can differentiate to monocytes while retaining lymphoid properties.

Effects of fominoben-HCl on rat liver.

The effect of Fominoben-HCl (Noleptan) was studied in male rats given 200 mg/kg/day over one, two or four weeks. In all three experiments a slight enlargement of the liver was observed. After one-week treatment, activity of microsomal mixed-function oxidase was stimulated without an increase in cytochrome P-450 content. After 2 or 4 weeks of treatment the activity of microsomal mixed-function oxidase expressed as the activity per microsomal protein remained unchanged. The fominoben-HCl-caused biochemical changes and the slight increase in organ weight of the liver were completely reversible within 2 weeks after cessation of treatment.

Ultrastructure of acute glomerular injury in IgA nephritis.

In the ultrastructure of an acute glomerular injury in two cases of IgA nephritis (Berger's disease), the tissue damage was characterized by intravascular coagulation and an influx of fibrin-like materials into the Bowman's space forming focal and local exudative disorganizing lesion. It is supposed that this lesion correlates with the segmental fibrinoid necrosis of light microscopic expression and could be the initial event resulting in small crescents and/or local adhesive lesions of IgA nephritis.

Genetic control of responsiveness of rat liver supernatant aldehyde dehydrogenase to phenobarbital and 3-methylcholanthrene.

The responsiveness of the hepatic supernatant NAD+-dependent aldehyde dehydrogenase with a high Km value (high Km-AldDH) to phenobarbital (PB) and 3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC) treatment was studied in male rats of three strains; Wistar, Long-Evans, and Sprague-Dawley. A remarkable strain difference in the response of the enzyme to PB or 3-MC was observed. In rats of the Wistar strain the enzyme activity remained unchanged ("non-responsive") in all rats after treatment with PB while it increased ("responsive") 5- to 19-fo-d in all rats after treatment with 3-MC. The enzyme activity increased 8- to 20-fold and 2- to 8-fold respectively after treatment with PB and 3-MC in all rats of the Long-Evans strain. In rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain the enzyme activity remained unchanged in half of all the rats treated with PB or 3-MC and increased 2- to 7-fold over the basal level in half of the treated rats. The non-responsive rats to PB were all responsive to 3-MC treatment while the responsive rats to PB were responsive in 65% and non-responsive in 35% to 3-MC treatment.

Information transmission in multi-input-output stochastic neuron models.

The Shannon's information theory in multi-way channels (Shannon, 1961) is applied to multi-input-output relations of the stochastic automaton models for interaction of excitatory and inhibitory impulse sequences proposed in the previous papers (Tsukada et al., 1977). In these models, the output spike train depends upon several statistical characteristics (mean frequency, standard deviation, form, order-dependence or order-independence, etc.) of the excitatory and inhibitory input spike trains. By the use of the multiple-access channel in information theory, some stochastic properties of temporal pattern discrimination in neurons are analyzed and discussed with biological systems.
