The temperature-sensitive adenovirus type 2 mutant H2ts1 is defective for polypeptide processing at the non-permissive temperature. We have in the present study mapped the mutation by marker rescue and DNA sequencing techniques: the mutation is a C/T transition located at map co-ordinate 61.1. Previous sequencing studies have identified an uninterrupted translational reading frame in this part of the adenovirus genome, encoding a hypothetical 23 X 10(3) Mr polypeptide. The mutation leads to a proline/leucine substitution in the 23 X 10(3) Mr polypeptide.
"This paper examines two methods of indirectly estimating mortality: the Bourgeois-Pichat method (estimation of life expectancy at birth), and the Bourbeau and Legare method.... This last method consists of estimating various past mortality measures, for a given population, by examining these same measures as they were observed in certain other populations, during the period in question." These methods are applied to Norwegian data for 1826-1976. The results are then compared with data observed during the same period. The findings are used to evaluate the two methods and assess their advantages and disadvantages. However, the emphasis is on the Bourbeau and Legare method. (summary in ENG, SPA)

Ultrastructural studies were done on a cornea obtained at the time of lamellar keratoplasty from a patient with the clinical diagnosis of Meesmann's corneal dystrophy. Light microscopy showed in the corneal epithelium the typical tiny cysts containing cellular debris and a homogeneous substance that reacted with periodic acid and Schiff's reagent and stained with Hale's colloidal iron; as well, the basement membrane was markedly thickened. Electron microscopy revealed that the cysts had a corrugated or microvillous wall, consistent with acantholysis. The epithelial cells were rich in glycogen, and many contained the peculiar substance described by others in Meesmann's corneal dystrophy. This substance appeared to be derived from the tonofilaments and was in close relation to the desmosomes. The thick basement membrane showed secondary changes, with one thick zone that was rich in collagen fibrils mimicking abnormal anchoring fibrils and one thin zone that was poor in fibrils but had frequent intercalated fibroblasts and probably represented a repair phenomenon. There was no apparent modification of Bowman's layer or the superficial stroma.
In a group of 15 males with X-linked ocular albinism and 13 obligate carriers of the gene for the condition skin biopsy in a search for giant pigment granules with light microscopy and macromelanosomes with electron microscopy gave positive results more often than iris transillumination and funduscopy. Thus, skin biopsy should significantly improve the detection of both affected males and carriers.

Daily oral administration of 1, 3 or 10 mg of RU16117 (11 alpha-methoxy ethinyl oestradiol) to normal postmenopausal women led to a progressive decrease of basal serum LH levels to 60.4 +/- 17.0, 35.1 +/- 9.1 and 20.1 +/- 2.8% of control (pretreatment values, P less than 0.01), respectively, after 4 wk of drug administration. Although the pattern was similar, the inhibitory effect of RU16117 was even more pronounced on FSH than LH levels: a 50% decrease of basal LH and FSH levels was obtained at the daily 1.8 and 1.2 mg doses of RU16117, respectively. No significant change of basal serum gonadotrophin levels was observed with the daily 0.3 mg dose. Administration of 1 mg of RU16117 every second day or 10 mg once a week led to a relatively small but significant (P less than 0.05) 20--25% decrease of basal serum LH levels after 4 wk of treatment in four out of five women. While daily 0.3 and 1.0 mg doses of RU16117 had no significant effect on the LH response to 100 microgram LHRH, the 3.0 mg dose delayed the response up to 90 min. The 10 mg dose, on the other hand, led to a markedly delayed and reduced response. Treatment for the same period (4 wk) with 1 mg RU16117 every second day or 10 mg once a week led to a small (20--25%, P less than 0.05) inhibition of the LH response to LHRH. At the dose of 10 mg once a week, RU16117 had no or minimal effect on endometrial histology. Since RU16117, an orally active weak oestrogenic compound, has been shown to have anticarcinogenic activity in the rat, the present findings suggest that this new steroid could be useful for the treatment of climacteric symptoms.
Bilateral keratoplasty performed on a 39-year-old patient with Scheie disease gave the opportunity to study the histological, histochemical and ultrastructural lesions of both corneas. The patient showed all the characteristics signs of Scheie disease with bilateral corneal opacities, thick face, synophrys, mitral and aortic valve stenosis, bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome, stiff joints, and was of normal intelligence. 24 hours urines revealed a marked excretion of mucopolysaccharides. Histology showed scarring of the superficial stroma. Histochemistry revealed an accumulation of acid mucopolysaccharides in the keratocytes throughout the stroma. Electron microscopy showed vacuoles or pleomorphic inclusions in the keratocytes compabible with abnormal lysosomes deficient in alpha-L-iduronidase.

Two cases of angiodysplasia of the parotid area are reported. Both appeared to consist of an anomalous mature venous mass. Both patients complained of a swelling which grew hard and bulged when the internal jugular vein pressure was elevated. Venography demonstrated venous enlargement while arteriography failed to demonstrate small arterial communications such as were present in one case. Radical surgical resection was successfully performed. Pathogenesis, classification, and treatment of these lesions are discussed.

The effect of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OH-dopamine) and of a cholesterol rich diet on the plasma and aortic cholesterol of female rats were studied. Both the diet and the 6-OH-dopamine produced an important increase in plasmatic and aortic cholesterol. A synergistic effect of these two treatments was observed on the plasma but not on the aortic cholesterol. The mechanism by which 6-OH-dopamine produces hypercholesterolemia and a increase in aortic cholesterol remains to be explained.
