Domestic pets and perennial nasal allergy in children.

Domestic pets form an important etiological factor in the occurrence of perennial allergic rhinitis. In their management, patients responded well to animal exclusion and hyposensitization, with good amelioration of all their symptoms; these measures form an effective treatment for this type of disease.

Effect of ATP on liver function tests in experimental diabetes.

Liver function tests were performed in severe and mild diabetic rats and under the influence of ATP. In mild diabetics the serum cholesterol was significantly increased, while in severe diabetes the serum cholesterol was significantly lower than in mild diabetes. The decreased serum cholesterol in severe diabetes may be an indication for the development of fatty liver. The serum alkaline phosphatase and serum bilirubin were significantly increased in both the severe and mild diabetic states, while the thymol turbidity test was insignificantly changed in both states of diabetes. Serum albumin was significantly decreased in 10 days mild diabetes, while it was insignificantly changed in 48 hrs severe diabetic animals. The effect of ATP was investigated in mild diabetes. ATP resulted in a significant increase in serum albumin and a decrease in total globulins with the resultant increase in A/G ratio. The serum alkaline phosphatase exhibited a significant reduction under the influence of ATP. The elevated cholesterol of mild diabetic rats remained significantly elevated and was not reduced by ATP, though the fat content of the liver showed a significant reduction. This may be due to more rapid mobilisation of fat from the liver under the influence of ATP. ATP showed no significant effect on serum bilirubin and thymol turbidity test. the histopathological examination of the liver revealed that administration of ATP to alloxan diabetic rats had a beneficial effect. It resulted in disappearrance of the fat globules from the liver cells.

Experimental scleroma. A histopathological study.

Klebsilla rhinoscleromatis suspension was experimentally inoculated into the nose and maxillary sinus of eight adult healthy rabbits. Two normal litter-mates served as controls. The animals were killed at varying intervals up to five months following the inoculation. Histopathological examination of the upper and lower respiratory tracts revealed a consistent pulmonary peribronchial and perivascular granulomatous reaction with a Mikulic cell-like appearance. The reaction was present in all the inoculated rabbits and increased in severity as the survival period was prolonged. The significance of these findings in the aetiopathogenesis of scleroma and to scleroma in humans is discussed.

Nasal and paranasal pathology in experimental bilharziasis.

The heads of ten white mice experimentally infested by bilharziasis were processed to examine the nasal and paranasal cavities. Five normal littermates served as controls. The incidence of pathology in these cavities was exceptionally high in the diseased group (100 per cent). Lymphoid hyperplasia was noticed in many cases while one case showed bilharzial eggs in relation to the nasal walls. The significance of these findings and their relationship to human bilharziasis is discussed.

Pregnancies in the presence of copper intra-uterine devices. Hysterosalpingographic studies.

Two copper-bearing intrauterine devices--the Cu-7 and Cu-T-200--were investigated to determine why contraceptive failures occur with these devices. For this investigation, 155 multiparous women were followed up for at least 24 months after IUD insertion (T-Cu-200 in 75 cases and the Cu-7 in 80 cases). Three women using the T-Cu-200 and 5 women using the Cu-7 became pregnant during the first year. Hysterosalpingographic findings are presented for 8 of these cases and for 2 additional cases (one with each device) who became pregnant during the second year of follow-up. These indicate that uterine abnormalities and disproportions between the uterine cavity's shape and size and that of the device are the primary reasons for device displacement and partial fundal coverage leading to contraceptive failures.

Effect of two long acting injectable progestogens on lactation in the human.

The effects of Depoprovera and Deladroxone were studied in humans, on certain milk components as well as on the growth of the nursed infants. Both drugs caused reduction in milk yield. Both drugs caused an increase in the concentration of milk total proteins, however. Depoprovera caused an increase while Deladroxone caused a decrease in the total amount of milk proteins per feed. Depoprovera showed no effect while Deladroxone caused an increase in the concentration of milk lipids; however, both drugs caused reduction in the total amount of milk lipids per feed. Both drugs showed no effect on the concentration of milk lactose, but caused reduction in the total amount of milk lactose per feed. The percentage increase in weight of nursed infants was decreased by Depoprovera, but not affected by Deladroxone.
