A calcium sensitive univalent cation channel could be formed by lysotriphosphoinositide on an artificial bilayer membrane made of oxidized cholesterol. The modified membrane was selectively permeable to univalent cations, but was only very sparingly permeable to anions or divalent cations. Selectivity sequence among group IA cations was Rb+ greater than Cs+ greater than Na+ greater than K+ greater than Li+. The conductance of the membrane was increased up to a value of about 10-2 ohm-1/cm2 with an increase in the concentration of univalent cation, and was drastically depressed by a relatively small increase in the concentration of calcium ion or other divalent cations. The sequence of depressing efficiency among divalent cations was Zn+ greater than Cd2+ greater than Ca2+ greater than Sr2+ greater than Mg2+.

A heretofore unreported unusual mechanism in the initiation of the paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) in a patient with WPW (Wolff-Parkinson-White) syndrome was observed using His bundle recordings. The patient initially had some degree of AV conduction disturbance at the level of the AV node. A premature atrial impulse initially activated the ventricle exclusively through the accessory pathway and the same impulse re-excited the ventricle via the AV nodal-His axis after finishing the pure pre-excitation with marked prolongation of the AH and the HV intervals. After finishing this double ventricular response it traversed to the atrium to produce the PSVT.

A study was conducted of 16 patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia. The most common oral manifestations were hemorrhagic diathesis and leukemic involvement. There was gingival bleeding, petechiae, and ecchymosis of the oral mucosa, massive infiltration-induced gingival swelling, ulcerative glossitis, swelling of the tonsils, and facial palsy. Inflammatory stomatitis also occurred. Patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia had a higher incidence and severity of oral bleeding than those with other types of acute leukemia. However, the oral findings in our series were not necessarily specific for acute promyelocytic leukemia because the same oral symptoms occur in other forms of acute leukemia.
