There exists a potential for blood-borne disease transmission with many diabetes self-care behaviors. It is necessary for the diabetes educator to instruct the patient regarding infection-control practices.
Atypical P. vivax cases reported in Manaus municipality led us to detect a genetic isolate of P. vivax. Variable regions of SSUrRNA were examined from the initial time of infection and in the two recrudescences/relapses from a patient exhibiting chloroquine and primaquine resistance. A unique isolate, found at all stages of infection, suggests the presence of a clonal expansion.
The clinical outcomes of bilateral overlapping single-pedicle flaps used for repair of congenital cleft of the soft palate in 10 animals (nine dogs and one cat) are reported. Six animals had concurrent cleft of the hard palate repaired using a previously described mucoperiosteal flap technique. Animals ranged from one to 13 months of age at surgery, with follow-up ranging from two to 12 months. Healing was uncomplicated in all cases and provided excellent functional results.

Skin overgrowth of auricular implant abutments can be a difficult and frustrating problem, leading to multiple procedures and delaying the placement of a definitive prosthesis. In the present patient, plastic rings or "washers" were employed to successfully deal with this problem. A discussion of the management of peri-implant soft tissues is presented.
In a survey of 1,057 active intravenous drug users in Baltimore, MD, who were recruited through extensive community outreach, 12 reported endocarditis and 113 reported subcutaneous abscesses in the 6 months before being interviewed. Of all the persons surveyed, 556 reported cleaning their skin prior to injection at any time and 173 reported cleaning their skin all the time in the 6 months before the interview. The frequency of subcutaneous abscesses was lower among those who reported skin cleaning all the time; a similar trend was noted for frequency of endocarditis. The relatively simple procedure of encouraging intravenous drug users to clean their skin prior to injection will not eliminate but might reduce the frequency of these serious and expensive infectious complications of intravenous drug use.
It is widely believed that family planning has important benefits for both maternal and child health. Despite this, little work has been done to quantify the potential effect of family planning in reducing maternal mortality. This paper assesses the impact of family planning in averting maternal deaths, and discusses the overall ability of risk strategies to address the bulk of maternal mortality. The practical difficulties of providing effective contraception to populations with high maternal mortality are addressed, and the need for maternal health care services as an adjunct to useful family planning programs is emphasized. Although family planning cannot by itself cause a substantial reduction in risk of pregnancy, the combined strategies of general fertility reduction, abortion services, and family planning for high-risk groups might effectively address about half of all maternal mortality in the developing world. Pregnancy and delivery care have the potential for saving large numbers of lives with appropriate interventions. It is concluded that reproductive risks can be reduced only by preventing unwanted pregnancies and protecting maternal health during wanted ones.
