This paper presents an autopsy case of primary malignant lymphoma of the urinary bladder. The patient, a 63-year-old man, consulted us because of macroscopic hematuria. Cystoscopy revealed a bladder tumor, which was diagnosed as an anaplastic cell carcinoma by transurethral punch biopsy. The tumor progressively increased in size, despite treatment with preoperative antineoplastic chemotherapy consisting of CDDP. Only ureterocutaneostomy and biopsy were performed at the operation although total cystectomy and ileal conduit had been planned, because the tumor had invaded into the perivesicular tissue. Biopsy revealed B cell lymphoma, which was characterized by specific staining with IgG by the PAP method. Although antineoplastic chemotherapy was performed again after operation, the patient gradually weakened and died 5 months after admission. At autopsy, a hen-egg sized, non-papillary tumor which invading into the perivesicular tissue was found at the anterior wall of the urinary bladder. There were many metastatic nodules in the thraco-lumbar vertebral columns, para-aortic lymphnodes and mesenteric lymphnodes. Lungs and liver were free from metastatic tumors.
A case of primary leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava was reported. The patient, a 74-year-old man, consulted our hospital with complaints of back pain and abdominal mass in right flank. Probe laparotomy revealed a tumor situated in the retroperitoneum and multiple metastatic nodules in the liver. Biopsy was performed and diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma. He was intensively treated with antineoplastic chemotherapy, but his condition gradually aggravated. He died 4 months after admission. The autopsy revealed a right retroperitoneal mass (17 X 12 X 18 cm in size, 1,340 g in weight) that showed a yellowish appearance. There was also a thumb-tip sized tumor with a stalk in the lumen of inferior vena cava. Both tumors grew in continuity with each other through the wall of inferior vena cava. The tumors were diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma, which derived from inferior vena cava.
Histopathological analysis for 94 Japanese alcoholic patients revealed alcoholic hepatitis 11%, chronic hepatitis 14%, fatty liver 16%, alcoholic liver fibrosis 22% and liver cirrhosis 31%. Alcoholic hyaline was found in only 30% of the cases of alcoholic hepatitis. Alcoholic liver fibrosis (without any findings except fibrosis and steatosis) was distinct from other type of diseases. Chronic hepatitis in alcoholics was mostly chronic active hepatitis (77%), whereas only 35% was chronic active hepatitis in nonalcoholics. Histologically typical alcoholic liver cirrhosis was uncommon.

A 39 year-old man with a mediastinal tumor was operated on. After the median sternotomy incision, a mediastinal cyst, which was connected to the right pulmonary hilus with a string, was found. The microscopic examination of the cyst revealed a bronchial cyst with ciliated columunar epithelium and muscle fibers. Adenocarcinoma was found in the mucosa of the cyst. This patient seemed to be the first reported instance of carcinoma in a mediastinal bronchial cyst.
Phenolic steroid sulphotransferase activity for both oestradiol and oestrone was identified in male rat liver cytosol in the 30 000-40 000 Mr fractions on gel filtration when activity was assayed at pH 5.5 (pH optimum 5.5-6.0). Activity for oestradiol but not oestrone was found in the 60 000-70 000-Mr range when assayed at pH 8.0 (pH optimum biphasic, 5.5-6.0 and 7.0-8.0). Km for oestradiol (1.3 microM) was lower than published values for hydroxysteroid sulphotransferases (15-35 microM) and previously reported oestradiol sulphotransferases (71-85 microM). At above 2 microM-oestradiol phenolic sulphotransferase activity exhibited substrate inhibition. The phenolic steroid sulphotransferase activity was found to be distinct in chromatofocusing from organic-anion-binding and bile acid-binding proteins previously identified in this Mr range. Further purification on hydroxyapatite yielded a 44-fold enriched fraction that contained two monomeric bands, Mr 32 500 and 29 500.

Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (gamma-GTP) was partially purified from human normal pancreas, pancreatic carcinoma and a human pancreatic cancer cell line, HPC-Y1. The characteristics of gamma-GTP from all three samples appeared to be identical. The estimated molecular weight of samples solubilized with Triton X-100 was 210K and that of bromelain-solubilized gamma-GTP was 110K. On polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, the main band in both the Triton- and the bromelain-solubilized gamma-GTP of these samples had similar electrophoretic mobility. The percentages binding with concanavalin A were 52%-62%, while on isoelectric focusing the pI values were 3.40-3.45. It was concluded that the heterogeneity of the gamma-GTP isoenzyme could not be identified by either gel filtration or polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and it is necessary to investigate the modification of carbohydrate structure on tumor.
The nucleus reticularis gigantocellularis of the rat medulla oblongata was perfused in situ, and effects of noxious stimuli on the release of immunoreactive Met-enkephalin were examined. Formalin-induced and thermal but not mechanical stimuli increased the "tonic" release of immunoreactive Met-enkephalin from this nucleus. No "phasic" increase was observed following the three forms of stimulation. A topical application of dibucaine abolished the formalin-induced increase in the release of immunoreactive Met-enkephalin. Therefore, the possibility that persistent noxious stimuli may activate the Met-enkephalin-containing fibers in the nucleus reticularis gigantocellularis has to be given consideration.
gamma-Glutamyltranspeptidase (gamma-GTP) activity was found in a human pancreatic cancer cell line, HPC-Y1, cultivated in a serum-free chemically defined medium. The gamma-GTP stained in the cytoplasms as fine granules and was produced constantly in a protein-free chemically defined medium. The detergent- or protease-solubilized gamma-GTP of HPC-Y1 cells in serum-free medium was compared with the gamma-GTPs extracted from HPC-Y1 cells in serum-containing medium, human pancreatic carcinoma and normal human pancreas. Their molecular weights, electrophoretic mobilities, affinity to Concanavalin A-Sepharose and isoelectric points were almost identical. No cancer specific properties in the gamma-GTP derived from human pancreatic carcinoma cell line were found by these analyses. However, the serum-free spent medium of HPC-Y1 cells was useful for purifying the gamma-GTP secreted from the human pancreatic carcinoma cell line, since it is not necessary to separate the contaminated serum components that are usually added for cell cultures and the extraction procedures could induce minor structural change and/or artificial modification of gamma-GTP.
