[First isolation in Italy of Naegleria australiensis (De Jonckheere, 1981)].

An epidemiological investigation was carried out in Northern Italian spa to detect presence and incidence of free-living amoebae, mostly belonging to amphizoic species Acanthamoeba and Naegleria. Seven pathogenic strains of Naegleria spp. were isolated. Morpho-biological characterization and indirect immunofluorescence assays showed that all these strains belong to N. australiensis, a new pathogenic species. Such a species could induce, along with N. fowleri and Acanthamoeba spp., fatal meningo-encephalitis in man and other mammals.

[Importation of malaria to Lombardy. II - Analysis of hospitalized cases].

Among 210 cases of imported malaria, officially notified in Lombardy from 1976 to 1980, we have selected 142 hospitalized patients and, about these, we got detailed informations on the stay in malaria endemic areas, on chemoprophylaxis and on their principal clinical data. We have found statistically significant correlations between P. falciparum infection and all the most frequent values in every class of epidemiological parameters considered, particularly with provenience from tropical African countries, touristic motivation, stay less than 30 days in winter season, onset of the illness within 20 days after the return in Italy, diagnostic lag shorter than 10 days after the onset and fever remission 2 or more days after starting specific treatment. There is also a tight correlation between these clinical parameters and the absence of individual chemoprophylaxis. The definition of these factors of risk is particularly useful to plan out some programs of prevention that should managed by regional Centers.

Entamoeba moshkovskii (Tshalaia, 1941): morpho-biological characterization of new strains isolated from the environment, and a review of the literature.

After an investigation carried out with samples from several sewage sludges from the town of Pavia (Italy) the AA. report the isolation of two new strains of Entamoeba moshkovskii. The usefulness and reliability of two methods, i.e. growth in hypotonic media and the thermoresistance tests in vitro for the biological typing of this species are analyzed and discussed. Both methods had already proven useful to characterize the Laredo-type strains of E. histolytica too, as reported by other AA.

Isolation and identification of pathogenic Naegleria australiensis (Amoebida, Vahlkampfiidae) from a spa in northern Italy.

Samples from therapeutic swimming pools and mud basins were cultured for free-living amoebae. Seven strains of pathogenic Naegleria species were isolated. Although some of the strains were as virulent as Naegleria fowleri, the etiological agent of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, they were identified as Naegleria australiensis with the indirect fluorescent-antibody technique. The virulence of the isolates for mice corresponded with the cytopathic effect for Vero cells. The N. australiensis strains were isolated from swimming pools with water temperatures ranging from 32 to 35 degrees C and from mud with temperatures from 25 to 43 degrees C. The presence of pathogenic N. australiensis in the swimming pools did not correlate with bacterial indicators.

[Incidence of intestinal parasitosis among the Batwa and Hutu pygmy tribes of Rwanda].

The AA have carried out an epidemiological investigation on the incidence of intestinal parasitosis in groups of populations belonging to the pygmoid tribes Batwa and Hutu living in the Northern and Southern regions of Rwanda (East Africa). Positivity for intestinal parasites (protozoa and/or helminths) reached 100% in the 309 subjects examined, no significant difference in prevalence being observed between the Northern and Southern groups. Among the protozoa, E. coli and E. histolytica were most commonly found, while trichocephalosis and ascaridiasis were the most frequently encountered helminthiasis. The occasional finding of Strongyloides fülleborni infestation should also be pointed out.

Isoenzyme analysis of Entamoeba histolytica for evaluation of pathogenicity: detection of zymodeme XIX in South America.

Authors report the results of the isoenzyme analysis of strains of Entamoeba histolytica isolated from international travellers. This recently developed method allows the detection of pathogenic strains by evaluating the electrophoretic mobility of cytoplasmic enzymes and was proved to be more reliable and quickly feasible than previous ones. The experience reported refers to three strains isolated from travellers coming from Ecuador, Brazil and Indonesia, respectively; the zymodeme XIX (in accordance with the Sargeaunt's classification) was identified in all the three cases. This zymodeme has been first detected in 1981 and should currently be considered rare; moreover, it has never been previously reported from the Americas.

Autochthonous strongyloidiasis in Italy: an epidemiological and clinical review of 150 cases.

The Pavia District, Northern Italy, is an endemic area of strongyloidiasis. This study reviews the epidemiology and clinics of 150 cases. For this purpose, subjects were categorized for sex, age, origin, profession, acute and chronic disease, symptoms due to larval migration, immunodepression (if present). The incidence, with male predominance (74.7%), peaked among adults (94.6%), and in rural areas (69.3%). Patients experienced digestive (58.6%), cutaneous (34.6%) and respiratory complaints (16.7%). Thiabendazole was successful in most cases, except for 6 gastroresected subjects. Mebendazole at high doses (1 g t. i. d. X 10 days), was no valid alternative drug for 12 patients.
