[Thrombotic microangiopathy and its ocular manifestations: an unusual complication of bone marrow graft].

The clinico-pathological aspect of an unusual case of thrombotic microangiopathy (M.A.T.) is reported in acute leukemia one year after bone marrow graft. The patient was first seen complaining of blurred vision in both eyes. Ocular findings included choriocapillaris and retinal vascular occlusions, resulting in bullous retinal detachments, massive retinal exudation and cystoid macular edema. The relationship between M.A.T. and bone marrow grafting is discussed with respect to the immunological disorders or graft-versus-host reaction and the role of irradiation.

[Experimental uveoretinitis induced in monkeys by retinal S antigen. Induction, histopathology (author's transl)].

S antigen was isolated from human and bovine retinas and purified by two chromatographic steps. Its purity was controlled by SDS-electrophoresis and immunodiffusion. Seven Cynomolgus monkeys received a single subcutaneous immunization with either 50 or 100 micrograms of human S antigen (5 animals) or 100 micrograms of bovine S antigen (2 animals) with complete Freund's adjuvant. All the monkeys had bilateral uveoretinitis and anti-"S" antibodies were found in their serum. The time course of the disease was followed clinically during one year and pathologic features were described at various time intervals. The disease includes prominent retinal vasculitis and granulomatous chorio-retinitis, with a chronic course, and leads after many months to almost complete destruction of the retina, with persistence of inflammatory infiltrates and pigment of cell migration.

[Prognosis in idiopathic retinal periphlebitis. Apropos of 14 cases].

Fourteen patients (26 eyes) suffering from idiopathic retinal periphlebitis were followed during a mean time of 6 years (2 to 11 years). At the first examination, five eyes presented with irreversible loss of vision (tractional retinal detachment, neovascular glaucoma). At the end of follow-up, the visual acuity was inferior to 0.1 in 6 eyes, between 0.1 and 0.5 in 7 eyes, superior to 0.6 in 13 eyes. In 70% of cases, initial visual acuity was maintained or ameliorated. New vessels were present in association with significant capillary closure in 18 eyes (70%). Cystoid macular edema appeared in 7 eyes (27%). Steroid therapy, or immunosuppressants in few cases, were usefull to suppress intraocular inflammation. Laser photocoagulation was performed in 18 eyes in order to prevent or reduce ocular neovascularization; beneficial results were obtained in 13 eyes.
