Application of atomic absorption spectrometry for the study of the subretinal fluid.

A method of determining the inorganic constituents of the subretinal fluid using atomic absorption spectrometry is presented. Due to the small volumes available of the samples, the addition of diluents was necessary in order to be able to carry out an analysis of the elements at the most sensitive wavelength in the optimal range of the calibration curve. Details concerning standard solutions, laboratory equipment, sample preparation, precision and accuracy are also considered.

Retinal detachment in retrolental fibroplasia.

Problems of retinal detachment in retrolental fibroplasia (RLF) based on observations during 10 years of 92 premature children treated with supplemental oxygen in incubators are discussed. Two essential types of retinal detachment can be distinguished: the oedematous type in the stages III-V of the active phase of RLF and the rhegmatogenous type of cicatricial RLF. In our material 2 cases of oedematous detachment, which regressed spontaneously, were found. The case of a 10-year-old boy with total retinal detachment in cicatricial RLF, which was diagnosed too late, is presented. Since good results have been described after scleral buckling procedures in cases diagnosed early enough, all children with RLF should remain under steady control.

Retinal function after surgical treatment of detachment.

1--8 years after successful surgery, for retinal detachment 47 patients (48 eyes) were included in the study. By using Goldmann's static perimetry macular and retinal periphery sensitivities were determined (in 2 meridians) as compared with the healthy eye. It was established that the changes in static perimetry run a course parallel to the disturbances in the perception of the Haidinger phenomenon and poor performance at the Amsler tests. The longer the period of macular detachment was, the greater were the changes in its sensitivity curve despite good visual acuity. A distinct lowering in sensitivity occurs also outside the macula, all over the area in which retinal detachment had occurred.

Some inorganic constituents of the subretinal fluid.

The inorganic constituents of the subretinal fluid (SRF) were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrometry. Four main elements (Na, K, Ca, Mg) were determined in 41 samples; Cu was determined in 36 samples and Zn in 24 samples. The results are presented graphically, taking into account the concentrations of each element in the SRF and the number of cases. In 9 cases, the concentrations of the inorganic elements were also determined in blood serum; it was established that the SRF is richer in Mg than blood serum and poorer in the other elements. No correlation was found between the concentration of the inorganic elements in the SRF and the clinical picture of retinal detachment.

[Fluorescence angiography in macular holes (author's transl)].

Studies were conducted on fluorescence angiography in lamellar macular holes. This methods allows to find some variations in ophthalmoscopically indentical cases what explains differences between their retinal functions. Using this method it is also possible to differentiate a tissue defect of the retina from other macular lesions.

[Butterfly-shaped dystrophy of the macula (author's transl)].

The authors report a rare form of pigment dystrophy of the macula in a 17-years-old patient, which was diagnosed on the basis of characteristic ophthalmoscopic changes. Results obtained from an analysis of all the patients relations pointed to a familial occurrence of these changes. Up till now a similar case has been described only by Deutman and co-workers (1970) as "Butterfly-shaped pigment dystrophy of the fovea".
