Clinical supervision: a challenge for critical care nurses.

Clinical supervision is defined and its implementation nationally is charted. Recognised models and choosing the appropriate model for implementing clinical supervision are discussed. A description of the initiatives undertaken with regard to clinical supervision within Southend Hospital is included, with particular reference to the Adult Intensive Therapy Unit; possible ways forward are identified. Quantitative data, obtained through a pilot questionnaire, from identifiable intensive therapy units across the North Thames and Eastern Region, are analysed.

Biofilm hydrogel dressing: a clinical evaluation in the treatment of pressure sores.

A new dressing for chronic wounds, BioFilm hydrogel dressing, was compared to a hydrocolloid dressing (HCD) control in a clinical trial involving 90 patients and 129 Stage I and II wounds (defined by Enis and Sarmienti). The testing sites included both acute care and extended care facilities. A comparison of healing response and functional characteristics of both dressings was part of this assessment. Biofilm dressings demonstrated a healing advantage over the HCD. In addition, clinicians judged that the hydrogel dressings were easier to use and had superior fluid management capability and product integrity with minimal disruption to the healing wounds.

Reproductive behavior of female rats treated with ethanol on postnatal days 1-7 or 8-14.

Effects of postnatal administration of ethanol upon adult reproductive behavior of female rats was investigated in the two studies reported here. Ethanol, in a nutriment vehicle, was administered by intragastric intubation to avoid confounding effects of underfeeding. Estrous cycles appeared typical in all animals. Treatment groups did not differ in fertility nor with respect to litter sizes or sex ratios of subsequent litters.
