Adenovirus DNA-protein complex purified by sedimentation on a sucrose gradient containing 4 M-guanidine hydrochloride was found to contain other virion proteins in addition to the terminal protein of mol. wt. 55000. In this report, we describe a simple and rapid method for the isolation of a homogeneous DNA-protein complex. The procedure involves gel electrophoresis of the complex on agarose in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate. DNA was found to migrate into the gel with a single protein of mol. wt. 55000 tightly attached to it. Restriction enzyme cleavage analysis of the DNA-protein complex shows that the protein is associated with the two terminal fragments.

The effect of added substances was studied on the yield of glutamic acid produced by gamma-ray irradiation of 2-oxoglutaric acid and ammonia in aqueous solution. The contents of amino acids in the irradiated solutions were determined with amino acids analyzer. Sodium nitrate, allyl alcohol or sodium formate was used as an added substance. The yield of glutamic acid significantly decreased by the addition of nitrate, and it was little affected by the addition of allyl alcohol. In the presence of formate the yield increased from G = 0.4 (2-oxoglutaric acid 0.05M and ammonium hydroxide 2M) to G = 1.1. As a result, it was found that hydrated electron contributes on the formation of glutamic acid, but hydroxyl radical does not. The yield showed a maximum at ca. 0.1 M ammonium hydroxide concentration. These facts indicate that NH2 radical does not contribute to the formation of glutamic acid. As a reaction mechanism, it can be explained that 2-oxoglutaric acid which had been reduced by hydrated electron reacts with ammonia.

The type-specific main (TM) antigen was extracted from the leptospiral cells of strain Kyoto of the Hebdomadis group by 90% phenol and was purified mainly by ethanol precipitation. The TM antigen was specific, forming one precipitin band by immunodiffusion and reacting by complement fixation test with anti-strain Kyoto serum; so far as has been tested, it does not appear to react with antisera of other serotypes. The sedimentation velocity of the TM antigen was 216S. Morphologically the TM antigen was filamentous in shape with a uniform width of 25 to 30 nm and various lengths from 50 nm to 1 mum. The infrared absorption pattern of the TM antigen generally resembled that of gram-negative bacterial endotoxin, and this fact suggests that the antigen is composed mainly of lipopolysaccharides. Galactose, rhamnose, xylose, arabinose, glucosamine, 13 kinds of acidic and neutral amino acids, lipids, and phosphorus were found in the TM antigen.

As a basis for chronobiologic analyses and thereby for screening deviant blood pressure, measurements are advocated, preferably with ambulatorily functional instrumentation at half-hour intervals around-the-clock for an initial span of 7 days. When only manual instrumentation is available, 3-hourly measurements during waking and one measurement, preferably by a companion, around mid-sleep is recommended to detect a blood pressure disorder. Such screening is warranted for a reasonably reliable diagnosis, particularly in order to recognize circadian blood pressure overswinging (Circadian Hyper-Amplitude-Tension, CHAT) and to separate this new disease risk syndrome from an elevation of the time structure (chronome)-adjusted average (MESOR), that is MESOR-hypertension, and from the coexistence of the two foregoing conditions.
