[Established nuclear medicine techniques for tumour diagnosis (tumour SPECT): can they still compete with (18)F-FDG-PET?].

This overview presents the indications of tumour SPECT in contrast to tumour PET using (18)F-FDG. A number of diagnostic SPECT radiopharmaceuticals have been used for years in oncology and are widely available in nuclear medicine departments. Today, tumour SPECT has to compete with tumour PET using (18)F-FDG. Other PET radiopharmaceuticals are common only in specialised centers. In comparison to SPECT, PET images with their higher resolution are technically superior. Therefore, PET is better than SPECT in localising a tumour, if the special tumour entity accumulates (18)F-FDG. Thus, (18)F-FDG-PET has largely replaced SPECT examinations using (201)Tl chloride, (67)Ga citrate or (99m)Tc anti-CEA. It is questionable whether mammascintigraphy using (99m)Tc-MIBI or (99m)Tctetrofosmine will be broadly accepted in clinical routine. SPECT radiopharmaceuticals are still up to date for examination of tumour entities which do not accumulate (18)F-FDG (e. g. neuroendocrine tumours) and in clinical problem solving if (18)F-FDG-PET is not regarded as superior (e. g. search for recurrent medullary thyroid carcinoma) or in the management of tumours with overlapping diagnosis and therapy as it is the case for differentiated thyroid carcinomas ((123)I/(131)I-NaI), phaeochromozytomas, and neuroblastomas ((123)I/(131)I-MIBG), carcinoids, gastroenteropancreatic tumours, paragangliomas, and Merkel-cell tumours (somatostatin receptor scintigraphy). Future developments concerning new SPECT radiopharmaceuticals and image fusion such as SPECT/CT are expected.

[Retransfusion of unwashed drainage blood after total hip and knee arthroplasty].

The method of retransfusion of drainage blood as known from the literature was investigated in a prospectiv study regarding effectivness and rate of side effects. 200 patients who underwent total hip and knee arthroplasty were investigated concerning hemoglobin, hematocrit, amount and quality of the retransfused drainage blood, the amount of autologous and homologous transfusions as well as complications and costs. 100 of these patients were selected as the control group. The amount of the retransfused drainage blood after hip arthroplasty amounted an average of 387 +/- 194 ml and after knee arthroplasty 595 +/- 250 ml. The retransfused blood had an average hemoglobin of 5,2 +/- 0,9mmol/l with a hematocrit of 0,24 0,05. No complications directly associated to the retransfusion were found. The need of transfusion was reduced for patients with knee arthroplasty about 30% and for hip arthroplasty about 25%. The retransfusion of unwashed drainage blood is a sufficient method to reduce perioperative homologous blood transfusion in patients with arthroplasty of hip and knee. Substantial complications were not observed, so that this method seems to be save enough for clinical usage. The method is easy to handle and usable without special technical devices. The autologous retransfusion of drainage blood can contribute to lower costs in patients treatement.

[The incidentaloma of the thyroid. Over- or underuse of diagnostic procedure for an epidemiologic finding?].

UNLABELLED: The incidentally detected thyroid nodule using sonography is described as incidentaloma; the most nodules have a diameter up to 1.5 cm. Sonography will detect thyroid nodules in more than 20% of the population in Germany. Epidemiological studies investigating the prevalence of malignancy in such incidentalomas are missing. The incidence of differentiated thyroid cancer is about 3 per 100,000 people and year. However, several monocentric studies have shown a prevalence of malignancy of up to 10% of the thyroid nodules in selected patients' group. The histology did notfound microcarcinomas only, but also small cancer with infiltration of the thyroid capsule, lymph node metastasis or multifocal spread. The studies were not designed for outcome measurement after early and incidental detection of small thyroid cancers. Hypoechogenity, ill defined borders, central hypervascularization or microcalcifications were used as combined criteria for risk stratification. The second method for risk stratification is scintigraphy and further tests are warranted for hypofunctioning nodule > or =1 cm. Additionally, the family history, patient's age <20 years, former radiation of the neck, and measurement of calcitonin should be regarded. Without such a risk stratification selection for fine needle aspiration is impossible. Fine needle aspiration of non-palpable incidentalomas led to non-representative or unequivocal cytological findings in up to 40%. Because better outcome of incidentally detected small thyroid carcinomas is not proved and because sonography, scintigraphy and fine needle aspiration remain imprecise regarding dignity of incidentalomas, fine needle aspiration is not the standard for small, non-palpable thyroid nodules. CONCLUSION: For management of incidentaloma, sonographically unsuspicious, scintigraphically indifferent (nodules > or =1 cm) and without any risk factors in patients' history, wait and see is justified when patient is informed about the problem.

Glucocorticoid receptor blockade disinhibits pituitary-adrenal activity during the stress hyporesponsive period of the mouse.

During postnatal development, mice undergo a period of reduced responsiveness of the pituitary-adrenal axis, the stress hyporesponsive period (SHRP), which is largely under control of maternal signals. The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that this quiescence in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) activity is mediated by glucocorticoid feedback. For this purpose, the role of mineralocorticoid receptors (MR) and glucocorticoid receptors (GR) in control of HPA activity was examined during the SHRP and in response to 24 h of maternal deprivation. Nondeprived or deprived (24 h) CD1 mice on postnatal d 8 were injected sc at 16 and 8 h before testing with the MR antagonist RU28318 or the GR antagonist RU38486. The results showed that, in nondeprived mice, blockade of GR rather than MR triggered a profound increase in anterior pituitary proopiomelanocortin mRNA, circulating ACTH, and corticosterone concentrations. In contrast, CRH mRNA in hypothalamus and GR mRNA in hippocampus and hypothalamus were decreased. Blockade of the GR during the deprivation period amplified the rise in corticosterone induced by maternal deprivation, whereas it reversed the deprivation effect on the other HPA markers, leading to profound increases in plasma ACTH, proopiomelanocortin mRNA expression in the anterior pituitary, CRH mRNA expression in the paraventricular nucleus, and MR mRNA expression in the hippocampus, but not in GR mRNA expression in the hippocampus and paraventricular nucleus. In conclusion, the data suggest that control of postnatal pituitary-adrenal activity during the SHRP involves GR-mediated feedback in the anterior pituitary, which is further potentiated in the absence of the mother.

Synthesis of silver molybdate clusters driven by laser-annealing.

The synthesis of silver rich molybdate clusters is achieved by laser induced chemical reaction of coadsorbed MoO(3) and O(2) molecules on free silver clusters. The reactants MoO(3) and/or O(2) molecules condensed at low temperature (77 K-175 K) on free silver clusters. Then, the silver clusters together with their adsorbed molecules are flashed either ionized with a discharge or ionized and heated by a laser. Then they are cooled down by evaporation. The synthesized chemical compounds are analyzed by a high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometer. If only one type of reactant is adsorbed on the cluster, only one oxide molecule is stabilized on the metallic core after the heating and cooling cycle. On the contrary, the coadsorption of the two types of molecules MoO(3) and O(2) on Ag(n) (+), at 77 K, leads to complex aggregates that transform, after laser heating, into a molybdate rich metal clusters. These synthesized species cool down by evaporating silver atoms showing evidence of a binary oxide that is more stable than the metallic core. Moreover we demonstrate that for small size molybdate clusters, a stoichiometric composition may differ from the bulk one.

Dominant transmission of prepubertal gynecomastia due to serum estrone excess: hormonal, biochemical, and genetic analysis in a large kindred.

Increased extraglandular aromatization has been reported to cause the rare entity of familial gynecomastia. Recently heterozygous inversions at the p450 aromatase gene promotor locus were detected in two different families with this syndrome. We studied a family in which seven affected males over three generations had inherited prepubertal gynecomastia in an autosomal dominant manner. The proband developed gynecomastia at 11.5 yr, entered puberty at 12.5 yr, but was incompletely virilized at 19 yr. A similar development was observed in his affected stepbrother and one first-degree cousin. All three boys had acceleration of prepubertal growth and bone age. The older two had a diminished pubertal growth spurt and precocious growth arrest, but their final heights were within the range of their target height. In addition, the maternal grandfather and three maternal uncles were affected, who all had been mastectomized. The mother of the proband had normal age at menarche and no macromastia. Estrone levels of the proband and the other affected boys were elevated, 17beta-estradiol levels were high-normal, and testosterone levels were low. Hormonal analyses of the affected adults, who had all fathered children, revealed pathologically low serum testosterone levels but normal to high-normal levels of estradiol and estrone. The mother of the proband had elevated estrone levels. Treatment of the proband was more effective with anastrozole than with testolactone and increased the initially reduced testes volume to normal size, promoted virilization, and normalized serum estrone and testosterone levels. Neither preadipocytes from breast fat tissue of the affected stepbrother nor peripheral lymphocytes of the affected boys exhibited increased aromatase activity in culture. Therefore, these cells can be excluded from being the source of estrone excess. In addition, serum of the proband and his stepbrother did not contain factors promoting aromatase activity as assayed using preadipocytes from control individuals.A repeat polymorphism of the p450 aromatase gene cosegregated with the disease phenotype in the family, making a mutation of the p450 aromatase gene likely. Single-strand conformational polymorphism analysis of the known alternative untranslated exons and all coding exons of the p450 aromatase gene did not indicate any mutation. In addition, fluorescent in situ hybridization analysis using four probes covering the promotor region did not reveal the presence of any major inversion at this locus. In conclusion, preadipocytes and blood cells were excluded as the cell source of increased aromatization. Fluorescent in situ hybridization and single-strand conformational polymorphism analyses did not reveal any mutation of the p450 aromatase gene, but an intragenic polymorphic marker cosegregated with the disease phenotype. Excess of serum estrone in the presence of normal 17beta-estradiol levels may be the only indicative serum parameter of this mild manifestation of aromatase excess syndrome, which includes prepubertal gynecomastia and moderate hypogonadism in men but not necessarily short stature. In women, this mode of aromatase excess may remain clinically inapparent.

Molecular alterations in apoptotic pathways after PKB/Akt-mediated chemoresistance in NCI H460 cells.

Protein kinase B/Akt has been described as a central mediator of antiapoptotic signals in cancer cells. Furthermore, Akt has been shown to affect cell cycle progression and proliferative pathways and to possess a potential function in tumorigenesis and chemoresistance. In this study, we show that the ectopic expression of a constitutively active form of Akt1 (CA-Akt1) results in enhanced chemoresistance of NCI H460 human NSCLC cells towards a panel of chemotherapeutic agents. To understand the molecular alterations leading to impaired chemosensitivity mediated by activated Akt, we analysed various apoptotic pathways, including the activation of p53, caspases 3, 7, 8, and 9, release of cytochrome c from mitochondria, and the expression levels of pro- and antiapoptotic proteins such as Bcl-2, Bcl-x(L), Bcl-x(s), Bax, or Bfl-1. We observed that expression of CA-Akt did not interfere with single defined apoptotic switches, but modulated the apoptotic threshold of several apoptotic pathways towards increasing the threshold of onset. In particular, we found that CA-Akt-expressing cells displayed increased expression of the antiapoptotic Bcl-2 family member protein Bcl-x(l), and a delayed onset of the p53 pathway after treatment with cisplatin or Mitoxantrone. Thus, our data suggest that Akt mediates chemoresistance in NHI H460 cells by interfering with and delaying the onset of various apoptotic pathways. A complete inactivation of apoptotic pathways was observed in none of the molecular alterations investigated. Our data strengthen the role of Akt as a central mediator of cell survival signals and/or chemoresistance and as an attractive target for cancer cell chemosensitisation.

Imaging lung function using rapid dynamic acquisition of T1-maps during oxygen enhancement.

This paper describes imaging of lung function with oxygen-enhanced MRI using dynamically acquired T1 parameter maps, which allows an accurate, quantitative assessment of time constants of T1-enhancement and therefore lung function. Eight healthy volunteers were examined on a 1.5-T whole-body scanner. Lung T1-maps based on an IR Snapshot FLASH technique (TE = 1.4 ms, TR = 3.5 ms, FA = 7 (composite function )) were dynamically acquired from each subject. Without waiting for full relaxation between subsequent acquisition of T1-maps, one T1-map was acquired every 6.7 s. For comparison, all subjects underwent a standard pulmonary function test (PFT). Oxygen wash-in and wash-out time course curves of T1 relaxation rate (R1)-enhancement were obtained and time constants of oxygen wash-in (w(in)) and wash-out (w(out)) were calculated. Averaged over the whole right lung, the mean w(out) was 43.90 +/- 10.47 s and the mean (w(in)) was 51.20 +/- 15.53 s, thus about 17% higher in magnitude. Wash-in time constants correlated strongly with forced expired volume in one second in percentage of the vital capacity (FEV1 % VC) and with maximum expiratory flow at 25% vital capacity (MEF25), whereas wash-out time constants showed only weak correlation. Using oxygen-enhanced rapid dynamic acquisition of T1-maps, time course curves of R1-enhancement can be obtained. With w(in) and w(out) two new parameters for assessing lung function are available. Therefore, the proposed method has the potential to provide regional information of pulmonary function in various lung diseases.

Polo-like kinase isoform expression is a prognostic factor in ovarian carcinoma.

The Polo-like kinase (PLK) family comprises three serine/threonine kinases, functionally involved in signal transduction pathways essential for the accomplishment of mitosis in both normal and malignant cells. Moreover, certain PLKs have been functionally linked to cytoskeletal reorganisation. In this study, the expression of PLK1 and PLK3 was determined immunohistochemically in tissue specimen of normal ovaries (n=9), cystadenomas (n=17), borderline tumours (n=13) and ovarian carcinomas (n=77). PLK 1 and PLK3 expression was low in normal ovarian surface epithelium and borderline tumours, with moderately higher expression levels in cystadenomas. In ovarian carcinomas, 26% of cases were PLK1 positive and 50.6% of cases were PLK3 positive. A positive correlation of both PLK1 and PLK3 expression with indicators of mitotic frequency could be established. The overexpression of either isoenzyme had an impact on patient prognosis with shortened survival time for patients with tumours positive for PLK1 (P=0.02) and PLK3 (P=0.02), but only PLK1 expression remained a prognostic factor in multivariate survival analysis (P=0.03). The results of this study, if interpreted in the context of recently published functional data, suggest that inhibition of PLKs might represent an interesting new targeted approach for chemotherapy of epithelial ovarian cancer. Furthermore, this study suggests that PLK1 is a novel independent prognostic marker in ovarian carcinomas.

Spin singlet formation in MgTi2O4: evidence of a helical dimerization pattern.

The transition-metal spinel MgTi2O4 undergoes a metal-insulator (M-I) transition on cooling below T(M-I)=260 K. A sharp reduction of the magnetic susceptibility below T(M-I) suggests the onset of a magnetic singlet state. Using high-resolution synchrotron and neutron powder diffraction, we have solved the low-temperature crystal structure of MgTi2O4, which is found to contain dimers with short Ti-Ti distances (the locations of the spin singlets) alternating with long bonds to form helices. Band structure calculations based on hybrid exchange density functional theory show that, at low temperatures, MgTi2O4 is an orbitally ordered band insulator.

[Cognitive dysfunction after abdominal surgery in elderly patients].

Elderly patients often suffer from postoperative cognitive deficits (POCD) after serious surgical operations. The reasons for this are not well understood. We investigated the influence of the invasiveness of the operation and the duration of the operation as well as the patient's preoperative physical status on measures of cognitive dysfunction. In a prospective study 59 elderly patients (mean age 69.2 years) were subjected to a neuropsychological test battery and a questionnaire following an abdominal surgical operation. The postoperative recovery with a focus on memory function was assessed using the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS) seven days after the operation. Self-reported cognitive deficits were studied using the a questionnaire of experienced attention deficits (FEDA) three months after the operation. Postoperative psychological and self-reported test results varied as a function of the invasiveness and the duration of the operation. After more invasive operations patients reported a stronger deficit in activities of daily living and a reduction in drive than after less invasive operations. In addition, the duration of anesthesia influenced the experienced deficits. The self-reported deficits were more strongly influenced by the features of the operation than the psychological test data. The physical status of the patients according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) along with the duration of anesthesia as covariate was identified as a good predictor for the cognitive recovery post operation.

A method to reduce the invasiveness of fetal catheterization in the cow.

Surgical intervention in general anesthesia (GA) of the cow in late gestation is a stressful condition for both mother and fetus, potentially leading to premature delivery or fetal death. The present study hypothesized that fetal catheterization at days 246-253 (90% of gestation) is done with less physical and metabolic stress for the mother and fetus, when the surgery is performed on a standing cow and local anesthesia (LA) rather than on a recumbent cow in general anesthesia. Fetal and uterine maternal intra-vascular catheters were implanted during general anesthesia (GA, n=24) or local analgesia (LA, n=7). Blood gases and metabolite levels in the fetal calves and their mothers were measured during surgery and for 5 days post-operatively. During surgery, venous blood pH was higher (7.44 +/- 0.01 versus 7.39 +/- 0.01, P<0.05) and hemoglobin and oxygen contents lower in LA cows compared with GA cows (9.3 +/- 0.3 mg/dl versus 11.8 +/- 0.2 mg/dl, P<0.001 and 10.0 +/- 0.3 ml/dl versus 12.6 +/- 0.6 ml/dl, P<0.05). The differences between the two groups of fetuses reflected those of their dams in that LA fetuses showed lower arterial oxygen pressure (18.3 +/- 1.4 mmHg versus 24.8 +/- 1.4 mmHg, P<0.05) and hemoglobin (7.81 +/- 0.30 mg/dl versus 9.22 +/- 0.21 mg/dl P<0.01) and furthermore, they also showed higher blood glucose (2.4 +/- 0.2 mM versus 1.4 +/- 0.1 mM, P<0.01). During the 5 days post-surgery, 10 GA fetuses (42%) and 1 LA fetus (14%) died in utero. Bacterial contamination was implicated in six of the GA deaths and in the one LA death. In the dams with surviving calves, differences in hemoglobin (9.49 +/- 0.21 mg/dl versus 11.17 +/- 0.23 mg/dl P<0.001) and O2ct (10.9 +/- 0.3 ml/dl versus 12.5 +/- 0.5 ml/dl, P<0.05) were still present, and in addition, blood glucose was higher in LA versus GA cows (4.3 +/- 0.2 mM versus 3.8 +/- 0.1 mM, P<0.05). The choice of surgical method did not affect post-surgery blood chemistry in the surviving fetuses, except that the higher blood glucose in the LA fetuses at surgery tended to be maintained also post-operatively (2.0 +/- 0.2 mM versus 1.5 +/- 0.1 mM, P=0.07). The observed differences in blood chemistry parameters between the two methods of surgery and possibly in the fetal death may be explained by differences in catheterization method and the associated differences in physical and metabolic stress during and after surgery. Thus, surgery upon a standing cow in local anesthesia should be considered as an alternative to surgery in universal anesthesia for fetal catheterization in the cow in late gestation.

Combined ACTH and glucocorticoid treatment improves survival and organ maturation in premature newborn calves.

Glucocorticoids play an important role in prenatal organ maturation in many species. In humans, maternal treatment with synthetic glucocorticoids improves neonatal adaptation of prematurely born infants. In cows, pre-term calf survival is improved following a single maternal glucocorticoid administration. We hypothesized that stimulation of endogenous cortisol secretion by adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) treatment combined with maternal dexamethasone treatment, would be even more efficient in stimulating organ maturation in the prematurely delivered calf. Three groups of premature calves were delivered by caesarian section at 90% of gestation length from dams which were either untreated or injected with dexamethasone before delivery, combined with either prenatal or postnatal ACTH treatment to the calf. During the first 24h after birth, thermoregulation, blood chemistry, liver values and organ weights were recorded. In the untreated calves, survival was significantly correlated with blood oxygenation, sodium and calcium levels at the moment of birth. There were marked maturational effects of the treatments on body temperature regulation, blood acid-base status, oxygenation, glucose, insulin, IGF-1 levels, weight of the heart, liver, gastrointestinal tract and thymus weight. For many of the measured metabolic, endocrine and organ weight parameters, the intrauterine ACTH treatment was associated with improved values relative to the postnatal ACTH treatment, which appeared to have no immediate effect on calf viability. In conclusion, the premature calf delivered by caesarian section at 90% of gestation length showed blood chemistry, metabolic, endocrine and organ growth characteristics that indicated severe prematurity. However, the maturation of organ function in newborn premature calves following maternal glucocorticoid injections was further enhanced if is was preceded by intra-fetal injections of ACTH.

Stem cell clonality and genotoxicity in hematopoietic cells: gene activation side effects should be avoidable.

Two serious adverse events involving activation of the LMO2 oncogene through retrovirus vector insertion in the otherwise extremely successful first gene therapy trial for X-linked severe combined immunodeficieny type 1 (SCID-X1) had initially caused widespread concern in the patient and research communities. Careful consideration 1 year after diagnosis of the second case still finds 12 of the treated patients clearly benefiting from gene therapy (freedom from treatment failure, 80%; survival 100%), a situation that should not portend the end of gene therapy for this disease, and is, in fact encouraging. While current approaches are justified to treat patients with otherwise life-threatening disorders, a broad consensus has developed that systematic basic research is required to further understand the pathophysiology of these serious adverse events and to provide new insights, enabling safer and more effective gene therapy strategies. With the continued success of SCID-X1 gene therapy in the majority of patients treated, it is of even greater importance to understand exactly which vector element or combination of elements predispose to toxicity. An in-depth study of the mechanisms behind the activation of the LMO2 and gammac genes will be highly instructive for the development of safer procedures and vectors. We summarize the central observations, ongoing experimental approaches, new concepts, and developments relevant to understanding, interpreting, and eventually overcoming the real and perceived obstacles posed by insertional mutagenesis due to gene transfer vectors.

Prognostic relevance of 20q13 gains in sporadic colorectal cancers: a FISH analysis.

BACKGROUND: Amplification of 20q13 is a frequent chromosomal alteration in solid tumors and harbors a number of putative oncogenes (CAS/CSE1-L, NABC1, or Aurora2). Amplifications on 20q13 have been identified as an independent prognostic marker indicating worse survival in breast and ovarian cancer. However, little is known about the prognostic significance of 20q13 gains in sporadic colorectal cancers. The aim of this study was to correlate 20q13 gains in sporadic colorectal cancers with other known prognostic factors, tumor progression, and overall survival. METHODS: Nuclei were extracted from 146 paraffin-embedded colorectal cancers of different UICC stages and used for fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with a directly labeled probe for 20q13.2 (VYSIS). Signals were counted in 120 nuclei per sample. 20q13 was considered gained when > or =40% of the nuclei showed 3 or more FISH signals. Statistical correlations were tested with log-rank tests and Kaplan-Meier survival curves. RESULTS: Signal numbers for 20q13.2 were gained in 78 cases (53%). Cases with gains on 20q13.2 showed worse outcome than cases without: the gain of 20q13.2 was an independent prognostic marker for overall survival (P=0.006) as well as tumor progression (P=0.012) in univariate and multivariate analyses. Gains on 20q13.2 did not correlate with tumor stage. However, there was a significant association between 20q13.2 gains and tumor location in the left-sided colon and an inverse correlation between histologic grade and 20q13.2 gains. CONCLUSION: These data indicate that gains on 20q13.2 correlate with faster tumor progression and worse patient survival independent from tumor size and lymph node involvement. Therefore, alterations on 20q13 are an important biological event in colorectal tumor progression with independent prognostic relevance.

The relation of markers of fetal growth with asthma, allergies and serum immunoglobulin E levels in children at age 5-7 years.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that fetal growth and maturation have an impact on the development of allergic diseases later in life. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between measures of fetal growth and allergic disease in children at age 5-7 years. METHODS: As part of the German International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood phase II surveys, a random sample of school beginners (n=1138) was examined in 1995. Data on anthropometric measures at birth and gestational age were obtained from maternal copies of birth records. Data on symptoms and doctor-diagnosed asthma, atopic dermatitis and hayfever were gathered by parental questionnaires. Atopic sensitization was assessed by serum IgE and skin prick tests to common aeroallergens. Children (741) had complete data for the explanatory variables of interest and were thus eligible for this analysis. Confounder-adjusted prevalence odds ratios (PORs) and means ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using multiple logistic and linear regression. RESULTS: Birth weight and gestational age were positively associated with atopic sensitization (Ptrend=0.025 and 0.035, respectively). Children with a low birth weight relative to head circumference had a decreased risk of sensitization (POR 0.44, 95% CI 0.21-0.91; Ptrend=0.020). Moreover, total serum IgE increased with increasing birth weight (Ptrend=0.042). No consistent relationship was observed between markers of fetal growth and wheezing, doctor-diagnosed asthma, atopic dermatitis and hayfever. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that fetal growth and maturity are associated with atopic sensitization and total serum IgE levels in childhood.
