The effects of penicillin on the ECoG of rabbit.

The effects of non-convulsive doses of i.v. penicillin (1.100.000/1.300.000 I.U./Kg) on the ECoG of rabbits was studied. A tendency to an increase in spindling activity together with the presence of characteristic penicillin spikes, polyspikes and spike and wave complexes often preceding or intermixed to the spindling activity, was the most prominent finding. These data indicate that spindles and penicillin induced spikes show a straight correlation and seem consistent with the hypothesis that spindles have a facilitant effect on epileptic discharges.

Familial oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy with distal spread.

An Italian male aged 50 years with oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy is reported. Eleven of his relatives, over a period of three generations, had ptosis, dysphagia, nasal voice and difficulty in walking. The distribution of muscle weakness in the propositus and in one of his sisters was proximal in the upper, but distal in the lower limbs, confirming the existence of a relationship between oculopharyngeal dystrophy and distal myopathy. The first muscle biopsy appeared normal except for some round-cell collections, whereas the second one, 5 years later, showed marked dystrophic changes. Some patients with oculopharyngeal dystrophy may apparently pass through a secondary muscular inflammatory stage.

[Central serous retinopathy. Etiopathogenetic and clinical considerations (author's transl)].

Etiopathogenetic, clinical and therapeutic study of 24 patients affected with central serous retinopathy, hospitalized in the Ophthalmological Clinic of the University of Bari during the period 1977-1978. After reviewing the main pathogenetic theories on the disease and taking into consideration their own findings, which are also based on specific psychiatric tests, the authors conclude that central serous retinopathy probably has a psychoangiospastic etiopathogenesis.
