A new bleomycin derivative NK631 was administered in five cases of advanced recurrent oral carcinoma. The visible improvement of the tumor was noted in three cases, and in the cases of lower lip carcinoma the tumor completely disappeared, however, there was no effective change in cases of cervical metastases of the floor of the mouth and tongue carcinoma. The peripheral lymphocyte counts and serum proteins disclosed a characteristic decrease, serum proteins decreased in the albumin fraction and slightly increased in alpha 2-globlin fraction. Main side effects of NK 631 were skin exanthema, alopecia, anorexia, pyrexia, fatigue and bleeding from the tumor lesion. Regarding the lung function, the vital capacity did not change, but PaO and PaCO in blood gas analysis were together observed to slightly decrease, and it may be supposed that the influence of NK631 on the lung function cannot be neglected. T-cell ratio, lymphocyte blastoformation following PHA stimulation, PPD and DNCB skin tests, and phagocytosis test of peripheral leucocytes were studied. The immuno-suppressive effect of KK631 was the same or weak as bleomycin.

A glomus tumor in the tongue of a 29-year-old Japanese male is presented. Ultrastructural examination demonstrated this tumor to be composed of the tumor cells having structural features in common with smooth muscle cells, and mast cells as the less frequent type cell. Moreover, a small number of C type virus particles were found to be in the cytoplasm or in the intercellular spaces. In this communication, besides the detailed description of the morphology of the glomus tumor, the possible involvement of C type virus in processes of tumor formation is discussed.
This paper presents treatment of carcinoma of the maxillary sinus with an attenuated mumps virus. The mumps virus was inoculated into two cases of very advanced carcinoma of the maxillary sinus by local and general injection. Shortly after injection, relief from severe cancer pain and growth inhibition or necrosis of tumor were observed in both cases. In this communication, we discuss a possible mechanism of antitumor effect of mumps virus by utilizing immunologic tests and interferon assay.
This paper presents treatment of midline granuloma with corticosteroids and immunological features of this disease. The cellular immunity state of this patient was examined by counting T cell subpopulation and lymphocyte blastformation index (BI) by phytohemagglutinin at various time intervals during the corticosteroid therapy. Consequently, the percentage of T cells and BI became greatly increased according to the subsiding of the primary lesion, whereas non-T cell production and its function were depressed. In this communication we discuss a possible autoantibody mechanism and impared lymphocyte transformation in midline granuloma.

This study investigated craniofacial growth in unilateral complete clefts using lateral roentgenographic cephalograms. The cleft sample was composed of 135 males and 120 females aged four, six, eight, ten, twelve and eighteen years. Control subjects included 120 non-cleft males and 120 non-cleft females of similar age to the cleft subjects. The cleft group differed from the control group in several major respects: (1) Their over-all growth trend showed a more downward or vertical direction; (2) The cranial base angle was more flattened; (3) The maxilla was smaller and was located in a more posterior and upward position; (4) Ramal height was shorter and the gonial angle was more obtuse. Chin position was generally retrognathic; (5) Skeletal profile showed less convexity; (6) Upper face height was less and lower face height was greater; (7) Both upper and lower central incisors showed a marked lingual inclination; (8) Females in both groups matured about two years earlier than did males. Underdevelopment in both the maxilla and the mandible was more pronounced in cleft females than in cleft males.
Cheek pressure during swallowing was measured on six operated complete cleft lip and palate cases (4-8 years of age) before and after expansion of buccal segments of maxillary arch. As control, seven non-cleft subjects with acceptable occlusion of the same age level were used. Before expansion, the pressures in the cleft cases were much higher than the controls. Immediately after expansion, increase in pressure was observed in cases which received rapid expansion. However, a few months after expansion, most cases showed a decrease in pressure. This is explained as being due to the adaptation of the perioral musculature to the expanded dental arch and/or the disappearance of hyperactivity of the perioral musculature during swallowing.
