Compulsive spitting--a culture bound symptom.

Compulsive Spitting, as a culture bound symptom has not been previously reported in the literature. Of 26 cases described, 8 were suffering from schizophrenia followed by 5 cases having mania, 4 each with depression and OCD, 3 with tic disorder and 2 with seizure disorder. More studies are warranted to study and report the culture bound symptoms in india and other countries.

An analysis of 60 cases of culture bound syndromes.

Of 60 cases of culture bound syndromes seen in psychiatry OPD, Dhat syndrome was most common (76.7%), followed by possession syndrome (13.3%). Depression by the most common associated psychiatric disorder. As the data on culture bound syndromes in Indian subcontinent is less, this study calls for careful evaluation of these patients psychologically to detect and treat the associated psychiatric comorbidity appropriately.

A study of P300-event related evoked potential in the patients of major depression.

Many studies involving various electrophysiological parameters have been conducted in psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and dementia to assess their cognitive dysfunctions. Not much reports are available in major depression. The present study was conducted in 20 patients of major depression to evaluate their cognitive functions in terms of P300. P300 or P3 wave of auditory event related evoked potentials (ERPs) is usually seen around 300 msec of presenting of target stimulus, if the subject is responding to it. Auditory ERPs were recorded using the standard 'odd ball' paradigm. The latencies of various components of ERPs N1, N2, P1, P2, and P3 were recorded and compared with those of 20 normal age and sex matched controls. The latency of P300 was found to be significantly delayed in cases of major depression as compared to that of controls. Other waves were also delayed in cases of depression but the difference was not statistically significant. Our results suggest that P300 latency is longer in the patients of major depression disorders which could be due to constitutive altered 'cognitive neuronal pool' or a neurotransmitter/neuropeptide imbalance. Further studies involving larger populations are required to elucidate the diagnostic and predictive role of latency of P300 in the cases of depression.

Post partum psychosis: a clinical study.

In this study of 192 cases of post partum psychosis, the mean age of cases was 24.2 years. A past history of post partum psychosis was present in 16 cases (8.3%). As per the RDC categories, a majority of patients had unspecified functional psychosis and developed psychosis after the birth of first child. There was a positive correlation between the birth of female child and psychosis. The majority of cases developed psychosis within first 2 weeks after delivery. There were several other statistically significant differences when these cases were compared with non-puerperal, disease-matched controls.

Allergy to tartrazine in alprazolam.

Allergy to tartrazine-containing psychotropic medication (especially antidepressants) had been reported. 20 patients of apparent allergy to tartrazine-containing alprazolam brands in 480 patients exposed to the dye are described. Rechallenge with non tartrazine-containing alprazolam brands did not produce the similar allergic reactions.

Psychiatric profile of patients with neurodermatitis.

Fifty patients of neurodermatitis attending the dermatology clinic of a general hospital were screened for psychiatric morbidity. Fifty patients suffering from tinea from the same clinic were taken as a control group (age, sex and socio-economic class matched). A majority of neurodermatitis patients were between 21-30 years of age-group (52%), males (84%), married (90%), literate up to primary (42%) and belonged to socio-economic class V (44%). The common sites of neurodermatitis were legs (28%), arms (16%), scrotum (12%) or multiple sites (36%). The duration of symptoms ranged from 1 month to 2 years (average duration was 6 months). The study group also showed significantly higher occupational and psychosexual problems (p < 0.001). The neurodermatitis patients scored significantly higher on N-2 scale and Hamilton rating scale for depression.
