Irrational phase synchronization.

We study the occurrence of physically observable phase locked states between chaotic oscillators and rotors in which the frequencies of the coupled systems are irrationally related. For two chaotic oscillators, the phenomenon occurs as a result of a coupling term which breaks the 2 pi invariance in the phase equations. In the case of rotors, a coupling term in the angular velocities results in very long times during which the coupled systems exhibit alternatively irrational phase synchronization and random phase diffusion. The range of parameters for which the phenomenon occurs contains an open set, and is thus physically observable.

Controlling transient dynamics to communicate with homoclinic chaos.

A control that stabilizes the transient dynamics of a homoclinic chaotic laser is used to encode discrete sources of information. The controlled trajectory is a complex spiking signal that has a constrained interspike interval, and therefore, the ratio of information transmitted is approximately constant. We also show that the controlled signal that encodes the source contains more information than the source. This property is advantageously used to correct possible errors in the transmission, or to increase the ratio of information per transmitted spike.

Communication through chaotic modeling of languages.

We propose a communication technique that uses modeling of language in the encoding-decoding process of message transmission. A temporal partition (time-delay coarse graining of the phase space based on the symbol sequence statistics) is introduced with little if any intervention required for the targeting of the trajectory. Message transmission is performed by means of codeword, i.e., specific targeting instructions are sent to the receiver rather than the explicit message. This approach yields (i) error correction availability for transmission in the presence of noise or dropouts, (ii) transmission in a compressed format, (iii) a high level of security against undesirable detection, and (iv) language recognition.

Near-infrared detection of flow injection analysis by acoustooptic tunable filter-based spectrophotometry.

The instrumentation development of a near-infrared (near-IR) spectrophotometer based on an acoustooptic tunable filter (AOTF) and its application as a detector for flow injection analysis (FIA) are reported. In addition to being compact and all solid state, this AOTF-based instrument is very sensitive, has high resolution, and can be rapidly scanned. The latter advantage make it uniquely suited as a detector for FIA, in that it can rapidly record the whole near-IR absorption spectrum of a mixture passing through the FIA flow cell. Subsequent treatment of the recorded spectra with multivariate calibration methods makes it possible to use the FIA, for the first time, for such applications as the simultaneous determination of trace amounts of water and benzene in ethanol. Because all organic compounds absorb light in the near-infrared region, this AOTF-based near-IR detector can serve as a universal detector for FIA; as a consequence, applications of the FIA techniques can be expanded to other areas which are not possible otherwise.
