Scintigraphy was evaluated in comparison to clinical and paraclinical methods used in diagnosis of breast tumors. 32 patients with palpable breast tumors were investigated by clinical examination, ultrasound, mammography and scintigraphy. Different radiopharmaceuticals marked with 99mTc were used, having different affinity for the tumoral tissue. A Siemens Diacam gamma camera was used. Patients were submitted to dynamic study of early blood-pool and tissular phase, followed by late static incidences. Regions of interest were compared with similar areas of the contralateral breast. Conclusions were compared to histopathological diagnosis. We have calculated sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) for each of the investigation methods. The sensitivity was 80% for clinical examination, 100% for ultrasonography, 66% for mammography and 100% for scintigraphy. The specificity was 77% for clinical examination, 50% for ultrasonography, 90% for mammography and 80% for scintigraphy. PPV was 75% for clinical examination, 60% for ultrasonography, 80% for mammography and 82% for mammography. NPV was 82% for clinical examination, 100% for ultrasonography, 71% for mammography and 100% for scintigraphy. Good correlation was found between scintigraphy and histopathology. Ultrasound and mammography also confirmed, in most cases, the clinically suspected diagnosis. Including scintigraphy in the investigation protocol for breast tumors will allow a better assessment of the therapy.

The authors suggest the use of a small size generator of constant electric currents, that could be used in patients after incorporation in the plaster of Paris casts. This was experimentally tested in animals in view of assessing the results. Good results, obtained in 5 patients, are communicated.

The goal of investigation was to determine the role of calcium and magnesium ions in the cerebrospinal fluid in ethylic-traumatic coma. We measured the level of calcium in the cerebrospinal fluid within simple photometric test and the magnesium level within xylidyl blue photometric test. We found a high mortality in patients with high level of calcium in cerebrospinal fluid and low level of magnesium in cerebrospinal fluid. At patients with ethylic-traumatic coma high levels of calcium in cerebrospinal fluid are caused by the excitatory amino acids cascade and increased of hematoencephalic barrier permeability. Decreased levels of magnesium in cerebrospinal fluid are associated with convulsions and a poor prognosis of the patients. These analyses are very important for establishment of prognosis in patients with ethylic-traumatic coma.

BACKGROUND: tibolone at usual doses of 2.5 mg/day in postmenopausal women has been shown to improve climacteric complaints, without affecting endometrial thickness and lipid profile or blood glucose. However, the potentially similar efficacy, but better tolerability, of a low dose of this drug (1.25 mg) has never been established. METHODS: 162 healthy, non-obese, post-menopausal women, aged 40-65 years, with an intact uterus were enrolled in a national, single centre, randomised, double blind, placebo controlled, parallel group trial. After 1 week of runin, patients were treated for 24 weeks with placebo, tibolone 1.25 mg or 2.5 mg/day. During the study laboratory tests, endometrial ultrasound scans and mammography were performed. Occurrence of menopausal signs and symptoms, including vaginal bleeding, and quality of sexual life were also checked. RESULTS: in the 120 patients terminating the study without major protocol violations, climacteric symptoms were similarly improved by tibolone 1.25 and 2.5 mg (78% and 90% reduction at week 24 for hot flushes, 36% and 34% for sweating episodes and 44% and 51% for vaginal dryness), but not by placebo. Benefits occurred earlier in the group treated with tibolone 2.5 mg. Quality of sexual life was almost invariably improved by tibolone as compared to placebo, but improvement occurred earlier in the tibolone 1.25 mg group. Severity of vaginal bleeding was not different between placebo and active treatment groups, except at week 12 when was higher. At the end of treatment vaginal bleeding occurred in 15% of patients treated with placebo, 14% treated with tibolone 1.25 mg and 12% treated with tibolone 2.5 mg. Endometrial thickness and breast density were not changed by treatment, as well as FSH, 17-beta-estradiol, total cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and blood glucose. Adverse events were reported by 14.7%, 26.7% and 24.4% of patients treated with placebo, tibolone 1.25 mg and tibolone 2.5 mg/day, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: tibolone at doses of 1.25 or 2.5 mg/day given for 24 weeks to postmenopausal women displayed similar efficacy and safety profiles, though were more effective than placebo. Tibolone 1.25 mg induced a more gradual relief from climacteric symptoms and a more prompt improvement of sexual function.

The aim of this study was to delete two genes from the genome of the fission yeast S. pombe in order to search for their functions in the cell. These genes are SPAC869.02c (MRI) and SPBC21C3.19 (MR2) and previous studies reported their significant induction after gamma irradiation. We carried out the deletions of the two genes and we replaced them with the selection marker ura4. Among the phenotype characteristics we tested the viability, the sexual behaviour and the radiosensitivity to ultraviolet and gamma irradiation. Our results indicate that MR1-deleted strain is sensitive to both UV and gamma irradiation, while the survival of the irradiated MR2-deleted strain doesn't appear to be influenced by the deletion. This suggests an involvement of MR1 gene in the adaptive response triggered by these types of genotoxic aggression. The comparison of MR1-d and MR2-d with the double deleted strains containing the deletion of MR1 or MR2 combined with the deletion of sty1 or rad3 genes led to a surprising result: the double mutants MR1-d sty1-d and MR1-d rad3-d were more resistant to both UV and gamma irradiation than the simple deleted strains sty1-d and rad3-d, respectively. This suggests a possible contribution of MR1 gene to the lethal process taking place in irradiated cells.
Male Wistar rats weighing 200 +/- 10 g were intoxicated with ethanol 50% (1 ml/100 g b.w./, day, for 12 days) and concomitantly treated with hydroethanol extract of Chrysanthemum balsamita. An increase of liver glucose-6-phosphatase and phosphorylase a activities correlated with a liver glycogen breakdown as well as a decrease of glycemia were obtained in rats given ethanol 50%. It was found that Chrysanthemum balsamita extract counteracted ethanol effects and maintained at normal limit the metabolite parameters.
Of 70 operated mediastinal tumors, 15 were neurogenic tumors, one of them clepsydra-shaped, which manifested from the very beginning with spastic paraparesis of the legs. The treatment consisted in a two-steps surgery, the first at the Neurosurgical Clinical of Iaşi (laminectomy and ablation of the rachidian tumor) and the second one, one month later, at the I-st Surgical Clinic of Iaşi (excision of mediastinal tumor and parenchymal bridge within the conjugation hole). The microscopic examination confirmed the diagnosis of neurinoma (schwannoma) Antoni A and B with haemorrhagic areas. Examined at one year interval, the patient was clinically cured with normal thoracic aspect. The clinical peculiarities and therapeutical possibilities of the clepsydra-shaped neurogenic mediastinal tumors are detailed.
