[Oculo-orbital changes in osteopetrosis].

Osteopetrosis means a low function of osteoclasts, that induces bone resorption with a decrease in bone density. It has two genetic forms: a benign form with autosomal dominant inheritance (AD) and a malignant form with autosomal recessive inheritance (AR). The most successful therapy is bone marrow transplantation (rate of success 80%). We will present a case of malignant osteopetrosis of a five years old child. The late diagnosis (at 18 month) and the malignant evolution has made possible only palliative treatment, without surgical or ophthalmologic-neurosurgical implication. The prognosis is unfavorable with 70% survival to six years and 30% to ten years.

Kinetic study of the indomethacin synthesis and thermal decomposition reactions.

The kinetics of indomethacin synthesis (achieved through a new method) was studied at 80 degrees C. The reaction proceeds in four steps. In the first step, by the condensation of levulinic acid with p-chlorobenzoyl-p-methoxy-phenyl-hydrazine in homogeneous acidic catalysis an intermediate is formed. In the second step, by the isomerisation of this intermediate a hydrazo compound is formed. In the third step, the isomerisation is followed by the o-benzydinic transposition of the reaction product mentioned above. In the fourth step, indomethacin is formed through a cyclization reaction. The rate constant of the indomethacin synthesis reaction was determined assuming that the cyclization reaction constitutes the rate-determining step. Spectrophotometric methods were used both in order to investigate the kinetics of the synthesis reaction and to verify the proposed mechanism. Then, a thermogravimetric study was performed on the purpose of finding out the temperature range in which indomethacin is stable. From the thermogravimetric curve kinetic parameters have been derived, using different calculation techniques.

Exogenous inositol and genes responsible for inositol transport are required for mating and sporulation in Shizosaccharomyces pombe.

Fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, is a natural inositol auxotroph. We show here that the amount of exogenous inositol added to the medium is critical for the control of its life cycle. Above growth-limiting concentrations inositol stimulates mating and sporulation in minimal medium. The effect of inositol is also observed on yeast-extract-medium plates. We selected a mutant, IM49, which mates and sporulates only poorly and show that it is defective in inositol transport. Its defect is in a gene (itr2) coding for a putative 12 membrane-spanning protein. The polypeptide contains the two sugar-transport motifs typical for hexose transporters and shows good homology to the two Saccharomyces cerevisiae inositol transporters. The itr2 gene is essential for cell growth and its mRNA level is repressed by glucose. Mutant IM49 is also complemented by a multicopy suppressor gene (itr1) which codes for a putative hexose transporter with unknown substrate specifity.

[Experimental study using 86Rb on the permeability of biomaterials used for occlusal pit and fissure sealants].

In experimental in vivo work, we used 45Ca and 131I radioisotopes to establish the impervious nature of biomaterials used for filling. A comparative study of permeability in 3 biomaterials used as pit and fissure sealant, alkylcyanoacrylate, Delton and Sigilar was conducted with 86Rb radiosotope. The materials were applied to the surface of 60 natural intact teeth divided into 3 sets and 6 groups. Each of the 3 types of materials were applied no one set of teeth. Within each set, a group of 10 teeth were labeled with 86Rb for 30 minutes and the other group was marked with 86Rb for 60 minutes. After washing, gamma emission was measured immediately after labeling then again 24 hours later. Results indicate that the biomaterial Delton is the least permeable to 86Rb, gamma counts being approximately 20-times lower with Delton than with alkylcyanoacrylate and Sigilar.

[Endogenous uveitis. Retrospective clinical study].

The paper proposes one retrospective study of cases with endogenous uveitis hospitalized and treated in Ophthalmological Clinic from Cluj, between 1983-1992. It underlines clinical, therapeutic features. The examination of the group of the patients depending on the treatment underlines the existence of two great therapeutical subgroups: other with nonsteroid antiinflammatory treatment and another with steroid antiinflammatory treatment. Are examined the characteristics of patients, disease and treatment as well its efficiency. Because approximately 25% from patients had a constant functional evolution and 18-20% had low visual acuity, it required the necessity of search some new therapeutical alternative and diversifying of the etiologic exams.

An optical spectroscopic study of borate glasses containing uranium ions.

An optical spectroscopic investigation has been performed on some borate glasses containing 1mol % UF(4), UO(2) and UO(3). The optical data confirm the presence of uranium ions in valence stages of +6, +5 and +4. The influence of the composition of the glass matrix and of the gamma-irradiation on the redox equilibrium of uranium ions was discussed.

[Fine needle puncture--method of treatment in nodular pathology of the thyroid].

Fine needle biopsy (FNB) has been used as a therapeutic method in different nodular lesions of the thyroid. Between 1989-1995, 295 subjects with thyroid cysts, 235 women and 60 men have been treated by FNB. The treatment of cysts was performed by: one or multiple aspirations in 207 cases, sclerosis by injection with tetracycline in 77 cases and by ethanol washing in 11 cases. 263 (89.11%) cases have been cured and we have lost track of 32 cases in the survey. Of the 207 cases treated by aspiration, 177 (86.5%) have been cured after one or more aspirations. Of the 77 cases treated by injections with tetracycline, 75 (97.26%) displayed sclerosis after one or more injections. All 11 cases treated by ethanol washing method displayed sclerosis. Between 1993-1995 we used percutaneous ethanol injection (PE1) in 6 cases, as an alternative to the classic treatment, in order to induce necrosis of toxic adenoma. After 1 to 9 injections all cases were cured, with the appearance of the entire image of the gland on the scintigram. In 4 cases of cold nodules with benign cytology PEI, induced a significant decrease of volume appreciated by sonography.

A mating deficient and temperature-sensitive lethal mutant of Schizosaccharomyces pombe defines a new fertility locus.

A recessive mutant allele, mef1-84, of a novel locus mapping on the left arm of chromosome I, between ade3 and ura1, 5 cM apart from lys5, confers temperature-sensitive growth and mating deficiency at the non-restrictive temperatures for growth. Two other mutations suppress the phenotype conferred by mef1-84: sts1-1 suppresses the temperature-sensitive growth only, and smd1-35 suppresses both temperature-sensitive growth and mating deficiency.
