Pityrosporum ovale/orbiculare in papillomatous nevus cell nevi.

62% of 200 papillomatous nevus cell nevi compared to 45% of 40 seborrheic keratoses showed the presence of Pityrosporum ovale/orbiculare (Malassezia furfur) on their surface, supposedly representing a saprophytic state of the microorganisms in vivo. The papillomatous nevus cell nevi were of the compound or dermal type. Significant inflammation, dysplasia or major changes in color were absent. Electron microscopy revealed the characteristic, sometimes budding fungal cells. A relationship between the presence of Pityrosporum organisms and papillomatosis is discussed.

Cell Membrane

[Argyria. A clinical, chemical analytic and micromorphologic study].

A 62-year-old male patient developed generalized argyria following the intake of silver-proteinacetyltannate (Targesin; approx. 60 g in 10 years) as treatment for gastric discomfort. On histological and ultrastructural examination of the skin, silver particles were found not only in the usual locations but also in the Schwann cell, the mast cell, and in smooth muscle cells. This corresponded to chemical analysis, proving the presence of this metal in the skin. In the blood, a level of 0.26 +/- 0.04 ppm silver was found. By means of an equation, attempts were made to demonstrate the reaction process involved in the formation of Ag2S as subjected to the photochemical effect of sunlight.

Argyria

[Erythrodermic sarcoidosis (a clinical, light and electron microscopy study)].

We report on a 50-year-old patient suffering from erythrodermic sarcoidosis accompanied by visible enlargement of the peripheric lymph nodes. Histologic examination revealed epithelioid granulomas in the skin, in a lymph node, and in a liver biopsy. Ultrastructurally, we found a focal presence of cells with Langerhans' granules sometimes in a spatial relation to lymphoid cells within the corial granulomas.

Biopsy

[Juvenile melanoma; a clinical and histological study].

Investigations were carried out in 52 female and 18 male patients, aged between 2 and 49 years, with juvenile melanoma. The tumor occured as a solitary tumor in all cases except one. It was mainly localized on the head (54%), and the extremities, on the trunk in three cases only. In 35% the tumor could be diagnosed clinically. Light microscopy revealed in 37.1% spindle cells, in 17.1% epitheloid cells, and in 45.7% the juvenile melanoma was of the mixed type. A proliferation of the vascular endothelial cells (37.1%) as well as immature looking mast cells in the tumor region were prominent findings. A transepidermal elimination of tumor cell nests was noted in one case. The other results are in agreement with earlier descriptions of this tumor.

Adolescent

[The ultrastructure and acid phosphatase activity in the sweat glands with "clear, reticulated cytoplasm" (author's transl)].

Investigations were carried out on the ultrastructure and distribution of acid phosphatase in the human sweat glands with "clear, reticulated cytoplasm". It is probable that the gland cells with vacuolized cytoplasm develop from the serous gland cells through a morphologically recognizable intermediate state. An extralysosomal activity of acid phosphatase occurs in the vacuolized gland cells. The free distribution of the enzyme activity is focal. A correlation between these findings and a possible holocrine mode of secretion is discussed.

Acid Phosphatase

[Histochemical and ultrastructural study of cytochrome-oxydase in basal cell epithelioma].

The activity of cytochrome-oxydase is less pronounced in the basal cell epithelioma than in the basal cells of the surrounding normal epidermis. The electron microscopic study of the localisation of the enzyme reveals that the cells of the basal cell epithelioma contain two types of mitochondria, the first of which having the same size as the epidermal mitochondria, and the other being giant mitochondria. The latter seem to be less active. The weak reactivity of the basal cell epithelioma for cytochrome-oxydase is probably due to the reduction of the cristae in mitochondria and to the functional deficiency of the giant mitochondria.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

On the occurrence of sphaeridia in basalioma cells and the basal cells of the overlying epidermis.

302 nuclear sections of basalioma cells, 145 nuclear sections of the basal cells of the epidermis above the tumor, and 177 nuclear sections of the basal cells of normal epidermis were investigated and statistically evaluated with the aim of determining the presence of sphaeridia occur significantly more frequently in the basal cells of the epidermis above the tumor and in normal epidermis than in the tumor itself. These findings are discussed in connection with the degree of cellular protein synthesis.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

[Hydrotherapy in cauterization wounds. A histologic study (author's transl)].

Investigations have have been carried out in guinea pigs to test the usefullness of hydrotherapy. Concentrated sulfuric acid was applied to the skin for a period of 30 sec and 5 min. After this the skin was washed with tap water for 1 hr. The treated area was then subjected to macroscopic and microscopic examination. When the acid was applied for 30 sec, followed by rinsing, an almost complete restitution of the skin was found on the test area macroscopically and microscopically. Significant differences were also observed after an exposition of 5 min in comparison with untreated control animals.

Animals

[Ultrastructure of solid basalioma. A morphometric study (author's transl.)].

A morphometric investigation was made on mitochondria of basalioma cells and the cells of the basal layer of the epidermis lying over the tumor. The mitochondria of the basalioma cells occupy 4.7% and of the epidermal basal cells 5.3% of the cytoplasm. The number of mitochondrial sections yields a relation of 6.6:10 in favor of the epidermal cells. These results demonstrate an alteration in the size of the basalioma cell mitochondria. The possible causes of this mitochondria enlargement were discussed. An attenuation of the activities of the mitochondrial, membrane-bound enzymes in the basalioma cells is caused in all probability primarily by a reduction of the cristae material in comparison to the basal epidermal cells. The nucleus-cytoplasm relation amounts to 6.3:10 in the basalioma cells and 3.0:10 in the basal epidermal cells.
