[Evaluation of hemolysis in 308 patients with valve prostheses. Practical value and causes of errors].

A study of haemolysis in 308 patients with prosthetic valves, making up a total of 364 prostheses, showed that the most practical test for screening patients is the level of the LDH 1 isoenzyme alpha-HBDH. After analysis of the lowest levels for each type of prosthesis currently in use, an acceptable average level for each is proposed. If the level of LDH 1 exceeds the limits of confidence, a complication must be excluded; this may be silent, and the most important is a dehiscence but a thrombosis or a deep haematoma must also be excluded. A periodic check on the enzyme levels should form part of the routine follow-up of these patients.

[Pineal organ and parietal eye of Lacerta vivipara: a qualitative and quantitative microscopic study of the uptake of 3H-5-hydroxytryptophan during ontogenesis].

After comparison of results obtained by different modalities of 3h-5HTP injections (involving intraallantodic, intraventricular and intraperitoneal injections), the intraperitoneal one was retaineed to study experimental cytochemcal biosynthesis of indoleamines, in the epiphysis of Lacerta vivpara J., during ontogenesis. From stage 36 of embryogenesis, the selective radioautographic labelling, significant of atritiated indoleamines storage, was located in the distal part of the epiphysis. From stage 36 to 40 (just before hatching) and 3 days after hatching, microscopic and microphotometric studies point out, in the epiphysis epithelium, a highly significant increase in tritiated infoleamines rate. In contrast, the weak nonspecific reactions, in the neighbouring brain structures (dorsal telencephalon, tectum opticum and paraphysis), stay constant. The metabolism and storage sites of indoleamines belong to sensory line cells. During ontogenesis, these sites appear successively in distal, middle and proximal epiphysis and from the basal to the upper part of the sensory line cells. The embryonic parietal eye, in spite of structural analogies, does not take up the radioactive compound.

Interaction of Mg2+ ions with nucleoside triphosphates by phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

The interaction of Mg2+ with nucleoside triphosphates: ATP, GTP, CTP and UTP has been studied by phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy in aqueous solution. The results show that these four nucleotides behave similarly. Purine and Purimidine bases have almost no effect on the phosphate groups even in the N7 pK region of ATP and GTP. The Mg2+ ion binds not to the alpha and alpha but only to the beta phosphate group. The fixation is stronger at neutral pH than at acid pH.

[Comparative morphometric data on the epiphysis, the subfornical organ, and the anterior pituitary gland in 2 groups of pure strain Wistar female rats, SPF or conventional].

In SPF female rats, the pineal gland is less voluminous and its cell-nuclei are smaller than those of conventionnal female rats. This confirms (with the voluminous adrenals previously reported) the stressing action of the absence of pathogenic germs on these animals. The anterior lobe of the hypophysis is slightly smaller and subfornical organ a little larger than in conventionnal female rats.
