Blood-lead and hypertension.

Blood and tap-water lead levels were examined in 135 hypertensives and 135 age and sex matched normotensives. Among male hypertensives there was a significant excess of cases with high blood-lead levels and a similar but statistically non-significant trend was found amongst female hypertensives. A positive correlation was found between blood-lead and tap-water lead. It is concluded that in the West of Scotland high blood-pressure is associated with high blood-lead levels, which might explain the high prevalence of cardiovascular disease in the area.

Detection of hepatitis B surface antigen among Scottish blood donors: evaluation of sensitive tanned-cell haemagglutination-inhibition test.

A total of 70 224 blood donations were tested at three Scottish blood transfusion centres for hepatitis B surface antigen /HBsAg) by an economical haemagglutination-inhibition method (E.H.A.I.) and the results compared with those of counterelectrophoresis (C.E.P.). A further 4086 donations were tested using the Wellcome turkey cell haemagglutination test, C.E.P., and E.H.A.I.E.H.A.I. was also compared with commercial haemagglutination and radioimmunoassay reagents for sensitivity and specificity against several established antigen panels and used to reinvestigate counterelectrophoresis-negative blood donations implicated in post-transfusion hepatitis. E.H.A.I. combines the inherent specificity of an inhibition reaction with a sensitivity equal to that of commercial radioimmunoassay and haemagglutination kits but at a fraction of the cost. The assessment of 70 224 blood donations in three regions showed that E.H.A.I. detected more antigen-positive blood donations than C.E.P. Results of retesting more than 100 blood donors implicated in 10 cases of post-transfusion hepatitis suggested that the use of E.H.A.I. or a test of similar sensitivity in place of C.E.P. may significantly reduce the incidence of this complication.

Psychological factors in hypospadias repair.

Children undergoing hypospadias repair and their parents have anxieties related not only to the operation but to future expectations. These anxieties are expressed by children through their drawings and by parents through interviews. They are enhanced by the fact that the hypospadias defect is only noticeable to the parents and child and is kept as secret information. Other defects, such as cleft palate, are obvious and cannot be hidden. The anxieties associated with hypospadias appear to be different whem compared to those associated with more obvious deformities.

Diagnosis of emphysema.

Thirty-seven patients with chronic obstructive lung disease (COLD) were divided into three groups on the basis of radiologic evidence of emphysema. The category of radiologic emphysema correlated with severity of abnormality of routine lung function, gas exchange and lung mechanics. Within the group of patients with no radiologic abnormally, a subgroup with severe functional abnormalities, quite similar to those found in patients with widespread radiologic emphysema, could be selected on the basis of maximum elastic recoil less than 10 cm H2O.

Phosphorylase b kinase inheritance in mice.

The gene for phosphoryl ase b kinase, a skeletal muscle enzyme, has been located on the X chromo some of mice. The inheritance of the enzyme through two generations from original matings between one inbred strain of mice, the I, which lacks the enzyme, and another strain, the C(57,) follows the classical Mendelian pattern.
