Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in stray and household cats in Tehran.

The prevalence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii specific IgG in stray and household cats in Tehran was determined by Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT) on serum samples from 100 cats (50 stray and 50 households). Overall infection rate was 63%. The infection rate in stray cats (90%) was significantly higher (p<0.001) than that of household cats (36%). Last serum positive dilutions varied from 1: 32 to 1: 512 titres in which the highest percentage (27%) was for 1:256 and the least (4.8%) was at 1:32. The rate of infection between male and female cats of both groups was not significantly different; 90.3% versus 89.5% for male and female in stray cats, respectively. Different sexes of household cats were seropositive at the same rate (36%). A high positive correlation (r(2)=0.97) between age and the rate of infection was observed. The prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in cats in Tehran was high, especially in stray cats which are probably the main source of Toxoplasma infection in this area.

Detection of serum antibody to Entameba histolytica in various population samples of amebic infection using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Microscopic identification of Entameba histolytica in stool is insensitive to differentiate this pathogenic ameba from morphologically identical Entameba dispar. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method was applied for diagnosing amebiasis by detection of E. histolytica antibody. A total of 258 sample sera were analyzed from five different groups including amebiasis patients, E. histolytica/E. dispar asymptomatic cyst carriers, patients clinically presumed to have intestinal and extra-intestinal amebiasis and healthy control. From 51 E. histolytica/E. dispar cysts passers identified by microscopy and culture, a positive anti-amebic antibody was measured only for eight specimens (15.6%) and 43 cyst carriers showed an absorbance less than cut-off likely due to E. dispar infection. These findings suggest usefulness of ELISA method in differentiation of Entameba species, in clinical laboratories less equipped with biological and biochemical methods or antigen capture kits.

Oral versus intravenous rehydration therapy in severe gastroenteritis.

A controlled, randomised trial comparing the results of oral rehydration therapy with those of intravenous fluid treatment in 470 children with severe gastroenteritis was undertaken. The oral rehydration therapy was divided into two phases--a rehydration phase that used high sodium isotonic fluid at 40 ml/kg per hour and a maintenance phase using low sodium isotonic fluid (sodium 40, potassium 30, bicarbonate 25, chloride 45, and dextrose 130 mmol/l). The results indicate that oral rehydration treatment, used according to this protocol, is successful in treating severe diarrhoea and dehydration, and has considerable advantages over intravenous fluid therapy in reducing complications associated with the treatment of hypernatraemia, in promoting rapid correction of hypokalaemia and acidosis, in decreasing the duration of diarrhoea, and in promoting a greater weight gain at hospital discharge.
