[Analysis of fatty acids from strains of Mycobacterium habana and Mycobacterium simiae].

A comparative analysis of mycobacterial fatty acid fractions of Mycobacteriun habana and Mycobacterium sineae strains was made. This study used the gas-liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Chromatographic profiles obtained from this technique were exposed and compared. This technique proves to be valuable as an alternative element in mycobacterial characterization and makes it possible to analyze the possible differences that may exist among mycobacterial species and to identify the present fatty acid fractions. The outcome proved that the studied strains had quantifiable quantities of over 20 C atom chain fatty acids. There are small differences among the strains in terms of these organic components. It was confirmed that each of then describes a characteristic chromatographic pattern although the composition of present fatty acids is very similar in both studied species.

[The ecological succession of mosquito species in the town of Boyeros, Ciudad de la Habana 1994-1996].

An analysis was made on the incidence of Culicidae in Boyeros municipality, City of Havana from 1994 to 1996 based on the requirements of the national program for eradication of Aedes aegypti. A total of 13 species was detected in which Aedes mediovittatus predominated during 3 years of study, followed by Culex quinquefasciatus whereas for the first time Aedes albopictus species was found in the territory. People's Councils Wajay, Santiago de las Vegas and Armada exhibited the highest values of infestation by Culicidae in the municipality, therefore, they required that anti-Aedes program, operators paid more attention to this situation. It was found that depots preferred by Culicidae for breeding were larval traps followed by low tanks in 1994 and 1995 and by other reservoirs in 1996. A mediovittatus preferred larval traps whereas Cx. quinquefasciatus preferred low tanks except in 1996 when this species was mostly found in other tanks. 93% of all test-positive reservoirs found were colonized by only one species, whereas 7% presented larvae from 2 species or more. A. mediovittatus and C. quinquefasciatus were the most related, above all in low tanks.

Antiulcerogenicity of the flavonoid fraction from Erica andevalensis Cabezudo-Rivera.

Investigations were carried out to determine the antiulcerogenicity of the flavonoid fraction (ethyl acetate extract) of Erica andevalensis Cabezudo-Rivera on gastric ulceration induced by different experimental models. Oral treatment with the ethyl acetate extract and the major flavonoid (myricetin 3-O-D-galactoside) were found to be effective to prevent gastric ulceration induced by cold-restraint stress in rats. Statistically significant ulcer index values with respect to the control group were observed. Mucus content was not increased although it was accompanied by an increase in proteins and hexosamines. In pyloric-ligated animals flavonoids showed a significant reduction in the number and severity of the ulcers. Under the same conditions acidity did not decrease with the flavonoid extract and myricetin 3-O-D-galactoside significantly as compared to control. Gastric ulcers induced by oral administration of absolute ethanol were reduced by pretreatment with the flavonoid extract of doses from 125 to 250 mg/kg and the isolated flavonoid of 25 mg/kg p.o. However neither the flavonic extract nor the isolated flavonoid induced changes in the amount and glycoprotein content of gastric mucus.
