Copulatory organ musculature in Childia (Acoela) as revealed by phalloidin fluorescence and confocal microscopy.

Copulatory organs of eight species of the monophyletic taxon Childia were investigated in detail, using phalloidin fluorescence method and confocal microscopy. Childia species were shown to have one, two or several tubular stylets, conical to cylindrical in shape, composed of few to numerous needles. The musculature varied greatly, from the absence of seminal vesicle to extensively developed seminal vesicles with several additional types of specialized muscles. Ten copulatory organ characters were coded and mapped on the total evidence tree. The data obtained permitted to follow the evolution of the Childia stylet and to demonstrate that the structure of the stylet apparatus is largely consistent with the phylogeny of the group (CI=0.75). Possible function of different muscle specializations was discussed.

Energy dependence of directed flow over a wide range of pseudorapidity in Au + Au collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.

We report on measurements of directed flow as a function of pseudorapidity in Au + Au collisions at energies of square root of SNN = 19.6, 62.4, 130 and 200 GeV as measured by the PHOBOS detector at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These results are particularly valuable because of the extensive, continuous pseudorapidity coverage of the PHOBOS detector. There is no significant indication of structure near midrapidity and the data surprisingly exhibit extended longitudinal scaling similar to that seen for elliptic flow and charged particle pseudorapidity density.

Balloon angioplasty of arteries of the upper extremities in patients with extracranial giant-cell arteritis.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the outcome of balloon angioplasty in the arteries of the upper extremities in patients with giant-cell arteritis (GCA) and stenosing extracranial involvement. METHODS: Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) for symptomatic upper limb artery stenoses (n = 29) and occlusions (n = 1) resistant to medical treatment was carried out in 10 patients (all women, mean age 65 years) with GCA. Vascular lesions were located in the subclavian (n = 4), axillary (n = 10) and brachial (n = 16) arteries. Interventional treatment was accompanied by immunosuppressive drugs in all patients. Follow-up included clinical and serological examination, magnetic resonance angiography and colour duplex ultrasound. RESULTS: Initial technical success of angioplasty was achieved in the case of all vascular lesions. In five patients, marked recurrent stenoses (vascular territories; n = 10/30) were found during follow-up (mean 24 months). The cumulative primary patency rate was 65.2%. All recurrent lesions developed in the territories of the initial long-segment stenoses. Repeated PTA (vascular territories, n = 8; patients, n = 5) provided a cumulative secondary patency rate of 82.6% and a cumulative tertiary patency rate of 89.7%. CONCLUSIONS: Despite a tendency to restenoses, balloon angioplasty of the upper-extremity artery, in combination with immunosuppressive treatment, is an efficient method for the treatment of extracranial GCA.

[Philipp Bozzini (1773-1809): The endoscopic idealist].

Philipp Bozzini was born in Mainz on the 25th May 1773. In 1794 he moved to Jena to continue his studies under Gottfried Gruner. After his first comprehensive report on the Lichtleiter (light conductor) (1806), he returned to Mainz, obtained his doctorate, and became a practicing physician. His report on the Lichtleiter created great interest; he was the first person to construct an autonomous endoscope. Against all criticism, Bozzini started an international discussion, based on his awkward Lichtleiter, which brought his idea to an extensive medical public.

[Maximilian Nitze (1848-1906): Obstetrician to urology].

Maximilian Carl Friedrich Nitze was born on the 18th of September 1848 in Berlin. In 1874 he passed his state examination in Leipzig for a doctorate in medicine. Nitze demonstrated the first urethroscope and cystoscope, which he had built with great effort and under considerable hardship, at the Dresden-Friedrichstadt Institute using a cadaver--this was the hour of birth of modern urology. Nitze's invention of the cystoscope and his achievements as a urologist have made urology into an independent specialist branch of medicine. This led, after his early death, to the establishment of the German Society for Urology and the Zeitschrift für Urologie in 1906, as well as the organization of the first urological congress in Vienna in 1907.

[Combined treatment of prostatic adenoma with the 80 Watt KTP-laser and low-pressure transurethral resection].

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this prospective study is to determine the effectiveness of method for vaporisation and elimination of the prostate adenoma. The results are analysed that obtain when combining this Laser-method with the resection at low pressure. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 151 patients with BPH symptomatic were treated between August 2004 and january 2006 with the KTP-Laser or combined with low pressure TURP. The additional Resection was carried out in those patients with large adenomas or to have accentuated middle lobule. The ablative effect was controlled at the end of the operation with TRUS (transrectal ultrasound). RESULTS: 151 patients were divided in 2 groups, group 1 (n:43) those with single laser treatment and group 2 (n: 108) with combined treatment. The control of the post-miccional peak-flow demonstrates an increase of 65,6% in group 1, and of 122,4 % in group 2. CONCLUSION: Our study reveals the advantages of combining both operative procedures to mainly obtain a better result in the ablation of the prostate adenoma in prostates of great size.

An evolutionary analysis of the relationship between spite and altruism.

We investigate the selective pressures on a social trait when evolution occurs in a population of constant size. We show that any social trait that is spiteful simultaneously qualifies as altruistic. In other words, any trait that reduces the fitness of less related individuals necessarily increases that of related ones. Our analysis demonstrates that the distinction between "Hamiltonian spite" and "Wilsonian spite" is not justified on the basis of fitness effects. We illustrate this general result with an explicit model for the evolution of a social act that reduces the recipient's survival ("harming trait"). This model shows that the evolution of harming is favoured if local demes are of small size and migration is low (philopatry). Further, deme size and migration rate determine whether harming evolves as a selfish strategy by increasing the fitness of the actor, or as a spiteful/altruistic strategy through its positive effect on the fitness of close kin.

Inferring candidate genes for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) assessed by the World Health Organization Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS).

The present study tests the psychometric properties and validity of the German version of the World Health Organization Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Self-Report Scale (ASRS), which is a short screening instrument for use in the general population. Furthermore, two candidate genes for ADHD, the COMT VAL158MET and the 5-HT2a T102C polymorphisms, were tested for associations with the ASRS subscales inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity in N = 203 healthy subjects. The ordinal CFA yielded a two-factorial model corroborating the structure of the official English WHO version. Genetic analysis revealed an association between the VAL allele of COMT and the inattention scale (F(1, 201) = 7.20, p = 0.008), the hyperactivity/impulsivity scale (F(1, 201) = 4.30, p = 0.039), and the total ASRS scale (F(2, 201) = 7.64, p = 0.006) with highest scores in carriers of the MET/MET genotype. The C-allele of 5-HT2a was significantly associated with the hyperactivity/impulsivity scale (F(1, 201) = 5.52, p = 0.020) and the total ASRS scale (F(1, 201) = 4.21, p = 0.042) with highest scores in carriers of the TT genotype. The data provide evidence for the structural as well as for the external validity of the ASRS.

Pleiotropic effect of the TPH A779C polymorphism on nicotine dependence and personality.

Recent studies from molecular genetics have suggested an association between the tryptophan hydroxylase 1 (TPH1) gene and nicotine addiction indicating a dysfunction of the serotonergic (5-HT) system in smoking behavior. In a sample of 252 healthy subjects, a significant association between variations observed in nicotine dependence and the heterozygous AC-genotype of the TPH A779C polymorphism could be demonstrated. Moreover, the heterozygous genotype was significantly associated with a personality trait of neurotic aggression (indirect hostility, negativism), as measured by the Buss-Durkee-Hostility-Inventory (BDHI). The positive heterosis effects with respect to nicotine addiction and personality support the idea that the TPH1 gene exerts pleiotropic effects.

Energy dependence of elliptic flow over a large pseudorapidity range in Au+Au collisions at the BNL relativistic heavy ion collider.

This Letter describes the measurement of the energy dependence of elliptic flow for charged particles in Au+Au collisions using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Data taken at collision energies of square root of s(NN)=19.6, 62.4, 130, and 200 GeV are shown over a wide range in pseudorapidity. These results, when plotted as a function of eta(')=|eta|-y(beam), scale with approximate linearity throughout eta('), implying no sharp changes in the dynamics of particle production as a function of pseudorapidity or increasing beam energy.

[Accidents in children and adolescents. Analysis of the accident event].

BACKGROUND: Accidents are the most frequent cause of death in children and adolescents. The aim of this study was to determine factors, which affect injury severity and to compare the absolute number of accidents with exposition data. PATIENT AND METHODS: From 1 January 1999 to 31 December 2001 a school survey of 2325 pupils was carried out. The 3645 accidents sustained by children and adolescents aged between 6 and 17 years treated at the surgical emergency department of the University Hospital Dresden were analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 3645 patients, 620 (17%) were admitted to hospital and 3025 (83%) were treated as outpatients. The most frequent diagnosis of the hospitalized patients was commotio cerebri; 83% of 36 severely injured patients had a head injury. 55.5% (297 of 536) of children between 6 and 9 years were using a protective helmet. In contrast only 14% of adolescents carried a protective helmet. None of 50 injured bicycle drivers with helmet had an AIS for head injuries >2. Twenty-for of 233 injured bicycle drivers without helmet had an AIS for head injuries >2. CONCLUSIONS: Head injuries are the main cause of hospitalization in traumatized children and adolescents. However, the use of a protective helmet becomes significantly less frequent with increasing age.

Fast T1- and T2-weighted pulmonary MR-imaging in patients with bronchial carcinoma.

PURPOSE: A prospective study to evaluate the diagnostic potential and limitations of three fast MRI sequences in patients with bronchial carcinoma based on the comparison with spiral CT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three fast chest MRI sequences from 20 patients with central or peripheral bronchial carcinoma were evaluated by two observers for relation of tumour to adjacent structures, lymph node enlargement, additional pulmonary lesions and artefacts. The information from MR-imaging was compared with the results from spiral CT. MRI comprised a T1-3D-GRE breath-hold examination ("VIBE", TR/TE 4.5/1.9 ms, flip-angle 12 degrees , matrix 502 x 512, 2.5 mm coronal slices), a breath-hold, T2-HASTE sequence (TR/TE 2000/43 ms, matrix 192 x 256, 10 mm coronal slices) and a respiration-triggered T2-TSE sequence (TR/TE 3000-6000/120 ms, matrix 270 x 512, 6 mm transverse slices). The FOV was adapted individually (380-480 mm). RESULTS: The presence of the primary bronchial carcinoma and infiltration of thoracic structures by tumour tissue could be demonstrated by all sequences. VIBE sequence was more suitable for detecting small pulmonary nodules than the other MRI examinations, but compared to CT still 20% of these lesions were missed. Contrary to VIBE and T2-weighted TSE scans, HASTE sequence was limited in imaging mediastinal lymph nodes due to missing relevant findings in 2/20 patients. HASTE images significantly provided the lowest rate of artefacts in imaging lung parenchyma (P < 0.001 in peripheral parenchyma), but spatial resolution was limited in this sequence. Concerning the differentiation between tumour and adjacent atelectasis (n = 8), T2-weighted TSE imaging was superior to CT and VIBE in all cases and to HASTE sequence in 4/8 patients. CONCLUSION: The combination of VIBE and HASTE sequence allows for an adaequate imaging of thoracic processes in patients with bronchial carcinoma, limited only in visualizing small pulmonary nodules. To obtain more detail resolution and to differentiate tumour tissue from adjacent atelectasis, T2-TSE examination may be added in selected cases.

Two types of aggression are differentially related to serotonergic activity and the A779C TPH polymorphism.

The authors investigated whether different types of aggression relate to the A779C tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) polymorphism and to serotonergic activity in volunteers. A factor analysis of the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory yielded 2 factors representing Neurotic Hostility (NH) and Aggressive Hostility (AH). The authors used a neuroendocrine challenge with Citalopram in 48 volunteers and increased cortisol concentrations only in those with high levels of AH. Finally, an association study with 58 volunteers revealed that the A779C TPH polymorphism significantly relates to AH, with the highest aggression levels for the genotype AA and the lowest aggression levels for the genotype CC, but not to NH. Results are discussed with respect to inconsistent findings in the literature, which may be explained by this distinction of types of aggression.

Loss of Wolbachia infection during colonisation in the invasive Argentine ant Linepithema humile.

WOLBACHIA are maternally inherited bacteria, which are very common in arthropods and nematodes. Wolbachia infection may affect host reproduction through feminisation, parthenogenesis, male-killing, cytoplasmic incompatibility and increased fecundity. Previous studies showing discrepancies between the phylogenies of Wolbachia and its arthropod hosts indicate that infection is frequently lost, but the causes of symbiont extinction have so far remained elusive. Here, we report data showing that colonisation of new habitats is a possible mechanism leading to the loss of infection. The presence and prevalence of Wolbachia were studied in three native and eight introduced populations of the Argentine ant Linepithema humile. The screening shows that the symbiont is common in the three native L. humile populations analysed. In contrast, Wolbachia was detected in only one of the introduced populations. The loss of infection associated with colonisation of new habitats may result from drift (founder effect) or altered selection pressures in the new habitat. Furthermore, a molecular phylogeny based on sequences of the Wolbachia wsp gene indicates that L. humile has been infected by a single strain. Horizontal transmission of the symbiont may be important in ants as suggested by the sequence similarity of strains in the three genera Linepithema, Acromyrmex, and Solenopsis native from South and Central America.

[Comparison of spine injuries by means of CT and MRI according to the classification of Magerl].

PURPOSE: A feasibility study of the classification of spine injuries by CT and MRI data according to the classification of Magerl for spine injuries. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 39 patients, 46 injured vertebrae were evaluated by means of CT and MRI. A single-slice helical CT (Somatom Plus S, Siemens, Erlangen, Germany) was used with a collimation and feed of 2 mm and 3 mm, respectively. Sagittal reformations were reconstructed from these data sets. MR imaging was performed with 1.5T and 1.0T machines (Magnetom Vision and Magnetom Impact, Siemens). Transverse and sagittal T1-w SE- images as well as sagittal T2-w TSE- and STIR-images were generated. Each fractured vertebra was independently categorized two times according to the classification of Magerl on the basis of CT- and MRI-images. The CT- and MRI-classifications were subsequently compared. RESULTS: Most fractures were classified as impaction fractures (A1) or burst fractures (A3). Only 5/46 injuries of vertebrae were not given the same classification by means of CT and MRI (r = 0.9). MRI showed more bony lesions than CT (n. s., p > 0.05) and was able to evaluate ruptures of the longitudinal ligaments in 5 patients. CONCLUSION: Classification of spine injuries according to the Magerl-classification showed a significant agreement between CT and MRI and therefore a comparable evaluation of stability. MRI was superior in delineating ligamental lesions.
