The future of human spaceflight.

After the Apollo Moon program, the international space station represents a further milestone of humankind in space, International follow-on programs like a manned return to the Moon and a first manned Mars Mission can be considered as the next logical step. More and more attention is also paid to the topic of future space tourism in Earth orbit, which is currently under investigation in the USA, Japan and Europe due to its multibillion dollar market potential and high acceptance in society. The wide variety of experience, gained within the space station program, should be used in order to achieve time and cost savings for future manned programs. Different strategies and roadmaps are investigated for space tourism and human missions to the Moon and Mars, based on a comprehensive systems analysis approach. By using DLR's software tool FAST (Fast Assessment of Space Technologies), different scenarios will be defined, optimised and finally evaluated with respect to mission architecture, required technologies, total costs and program duration. This includes trajectory analysis, spacecraft design on subsystem level, operations and life cycle cost analysis. For space tourism, an expected evolutionary roadmap will be described which is initiated by short suborbital tourism and ends with visionary designs like the Space Hotel Berlin and the Space Hotel Europe concept. Furthermore the potential space tourism market, its economic meaning as well as the expected range of the costs of a space ticket (e.g. $50,000 for a suborbital flight) will be analysed and quantified. For human missions to the Moon and Mars, an international 20 year program for the first decades of the next millennium is proposed, which requires about $2.5 Billion per year for a manned return to the Moon program and about $2.6 Billion per year for the first 3 manned Mars missions. This is about the annual budget, which is currently spend by the USA only for the operations of its Space Shuttle fleet which generally proofs the affordability of such ambitious programs after the build-up of the International Space Station, when corresponding budget might become again available.

Developing an ethylene oxide quality assurance program.

Regulations concerning the acceptable levels of Ethylene Oxide (EtO) in the hospital work environment have been tightened. The need has increased for both monitoring equipment and for programs to evaluate the results obtained. Development of a program at a community hospital is discussed, with a consideration of equipment cost-effectiveness, availability, and ease of use. The program developed includes both installation of equipment to reduce the levels of EtO in the work area, and purchase of equipment to monitor the EtO levels in the air, and to monitor EtO levels in the "breathing zone" for individual employees. This program also includes the establishment and review of policies concerning the purposes and procedures for EtO use in the hospital. An inservice education program is described, which includes documentation of employee attendance and comprehension, with follow-up to assure compliance with procedures. Monitoring the personnel for exposure to EtO can support the value of instituting such policies.

[Population genetics of 9 Y-chromosome STR loci w Northern Poland].

A total of 508 unrelated males from the North Poland population were analyzed for 9 Y-chromosome STRs (DYS 19, DYS 390, DYS 393, DYS 392, DYS 391, DYS 389I, DYS 389II and DYS 385I/II) using two multiplex reactions and detection of PCR products using capillary electrophoresis. In the analyzed sample 328 different haplotypes were identified, among which 264 were unique. It was found that the model for a Polish population haplotype (DYS 19*17, DYS 390*25, DYS 393*13, DYS 392*11, DYS 391*10, DYS 389I*13, DYS 389II*30, DYS 385I/II*10,14) is almost 15 times more frequent in our population than in a cumulative European one. The haplotype diversity/discrimination index calculated for 9 loci is 0.9943. In the analysed population sample three mutations were detected in the DYS19 (duplication) and DYS385I/II loci (triplications).

MR imaging of pineoblastomas.

Pineoblastomas, which originate from the pineal gland, are extremely malignant tumors that grow quickly and aggressively. Because they spread so fast and the probability of longterm survival is poor, it is important to diagnose these tumors early. This article discusses magnetic resonance's role in imaging pineoblastomas. MR is particularly effective for this task due to its ability to visualize the pineoblastoma in three different planes, both before and after the administration of gadolinium.
