B. megaterium NCTC 5637 has been shown to grow into long chains in 1% glucose and 1% suramin (w/v). This effect was not noticeable in lower concentration of the inhibitor. The effect diminished in suramin free medium, indicating the change to be phenotypic.
Short-chain-forming Streptococcus faecalis var. zymogenes (group D) has been found to elaborate an extracellular system, which in crude form and after fractionation with 75% saturated ammonium sulphate and on gel filtration on G-75 Sephadex has been shown to split the long chains of the atypical strain NCTC 2400 of the same species. The Gram staining reveals random sites of the lytic activity in the chains indicated by the presence of Gram-negative lysing cocci within a single chain.

Cl. sporogenes NCTC 532 was irradiated with UV light, 20 mins. irradiated colonies after initial 48 hours incubation at 37 degrees C and 10-20 days ageing at room temperature (22 to 25 degrees C), gave rise to feathery outbrusts. The material from these outbursts grew in long chains in fluid media. A pure chain - forming culture could not be obtained as the single cells or pairs always "contaminated" the chain - forming culture.
Cl. welchii NCTC 6785 was grown in 1% glucose containing medium having 1% Suramin w/v. The cells grew into long chains of thirty units. This effect was not found beyond 0.5% concentration. On transfer into Suramin free medium the chains reverted to normal morphology indicating the change in morphology to be phenotypic.
