The intraorbital arrangement of the anterior and posterior ethmoidal foramina.

This study, instigated by surgical observations, and mainly carried out on the dry bone, attempts to analyse both the depth and variability of the anterior and posterior ethmoidal foramina through which pass the ethmoidal aa. The surgical implications of this study relate not only to ligation of the ethmoidal aa. in certain cases of epistaxis, their embolisation and the endonasal microsurgery of the ethmoid, but also to the surgery of the anterior cranial fossa. The study is based on 200 anatomic observations.

Memory for related and unrelated words: further evidence on the influence of semantic factors in immediate serial recall.

A number of recent studies have explored the role of long-term memory factors in memory span tasks. The effects of lexicality, frequency, imageability, and word class have been investigated. The work reported in this paper examined the effect of semantic organization on the recall of short lists of words. Specifically, the influence of semantic category on immediate serial recall and the interaction of this variable with articulatory suppression was investigated in three experiments. Experiment 1 compared immediate serial recall performance when lists comprising items from the same semantic category were used (homogeneous condition) with a situation where lists held items from different semantic categories. Experiment 2 examined the same conditions with and without articulatory suppression during item presentation, and Experiment 3 reproduced these conditions with suppression occurring throughout presentation and recall. Results of all three experiments showed a clear advantage for the homogeneous condition. Experiments 2 and 3 showed that the homogeneous category advantage did not depend on the articulatory loop. Furthermore, error analysis indicated that this effect was mainly attributable to better item information recall for the homogeneous condition. These results are interpreted as reflecting a long-term memory contribution to the recall stage of immediate serial recall tasks.

Effects of transection of the spinal cord in the rat: cystometric and autoradiographic studies.

Cystometric studies and autoradiographic experiments were performed in the rat to determine the urodynamic parameters and the cholinergic muscarinic binding properties of detrusor in control animals and those with complete spinal cord transection. After an unexplored spinal shock phase, the reactivity of the bladder was studied at 2, 5 and 9 weeks following transection. The chief modifications caused by spinal cord injury on the cystomanometric parameters were an increase of the maximal amplitude of contraction and a decrease of the pressure threshold. This correlated well with the results obtained in the autoradiographic studies, in which the density of muscarinic receptors in transected rats increased by 80% and 60% in the vesical sections after 2 and 5 weeks. The density of these muscarinic receptors sites returned to control levels 9 weeks after section.

A multidisciplinary, multifaceted HIV program: linking the resources.

The current and potential impact of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease on the financial and human resources of institutions requires strategic planning by health care administrators and providers. The HIV disease devastates the lives of many individuals, and it continues to impact the health care industry with accelerating force. Fairfax Hospital has developed a comprehensive HIV program to address the current needs of people afflicted with this disease and to manage for the future. Goals and strategies are discussed.

Correlation between PAH airborne concentration and PAH-DNA adducts levels in coke-oven workers.

In order to evaluate the correlation between peripheral blood leukocyte DNA adducts as an indicator of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and the airborne contamination of PAH at the work places, a survey of a cohort of coke-oven workers has been carried out. In each workplace, total and specific PAH airborne concentrations were measured. Among the job title groups, the highest proportion of subjects with levels of adducts above the detection limit and the highest mean value were observed in the door-operators. The correlation between median values of environmental benzo(a)pyrene concentration and mean values of adducts concentration support the fact that the maintenance workers group has a higher relative risk (RR) to have detectable level of PAH-adducts, which is estimated to be 1.84 for an increase of 1 micrograms/m3 of benzo(a)pyrene.

Expression of hsp70 gene in lymphocytes from normotensive and hypertensive humans.

The impact of environmental factors on hypertension depends to a certain extent on the individual's genetic background. Environmental temperature is one of the known modulators of blood pressure. We have previously demonstrated abnormal expression of a major environmentally-controlled gene, hsp70, in hypertensive mice and rats. We have developed a simple ex vivo method for the evaluation of hsp genes expression in humans. In the present study, we investigated the accumulation of hsp70 mRNA in lymphocytes from normotensive and hypertensive humans. The data showed a higher accumulation of hsp70 mRNA in lymphocytes from hypertensives vs normotensives (2.04 +/- 0.35 vs 1.48 +/- 0.29 OD mm2, P < 0.05) submitted to heat stress (15 min at 42 degrees C). Basal levels were the same in both groups (0.11 +/- 0.01 vs 0.10 +/- 0.01 OD mm2, respectively). These results support our hypothesis that alterations in the expression of a major environmentally-controlled gene, hsp70, may be involved in enhanced environmental responses even in human hypertension.
