[Is vesicular cholesterolosis a particular anatomo-clinical form of cholesterol lithiasis? Apropos of a case of cholesterol polyp manifested by an acute complication].

A case of cholesterolic polyp, revealed by the formation of an infundibulo-cystic enclave, is reported, the polyp having the appearance of a cholesterolic calculus, but a pediculated one, and one acting as a calculus. The extreme rarity of this complication is emphasized. Despite the frequency of associated lithiasis, the cholesterolosis are included in a different framework from lithiasis, that of the cholecystoses that on histology show typical pure parietal lesions without inflammation. Findings in this atypical case suggest possible common pathogenic factors for the two affections, and raise a proposal for inclusion of cholesterolosis within the nosologic framework of lithiasis.

[Two cases of sellar chordomas. Ultrastructural and histochemical study (author's transl)].

Two cases of sellar chordomas are reported, with ultrastructural and histochemical study. The embryological origin and the histochemical data are discussed. The question of chondroid chordomas is evoked and the results of the ultrastructural study are interpreted on the basis of the cases hitherto reported. Special attention is called to the methods for the detection of polysaccharides by electron microscopy in such proliferations. Tissue culture seems to be able of providing a good information as to the secretory activity of the chordomas located at the skull base.

[Immunohistochemical study of plasmocytes and T-lymphocyte subpopulations in Hashimoto's thyroiditis].

In Hashimoto's thyroiditis, there is a diffuse interfollicular infiltration of lymphocytes and plasmocytes and lymphoid collections with germinal centers. Eleven cases of Hashimoto's disease were studied with immunocytochemical methods for characterization of intracytoplasmic immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG, IgM, Kappa and lambda light chains). Most of the cells are plasmocytes stained positively for intracytoplasmic IgG; IgA positive cells were less frequent and IgM positive cells are rare. Kappa positive plasma cells are more numerous than lambda positive cells in the germinal centers and the interfollicular infiltration. By an indirect immunofluorescence technique in frozen tissue, we have studied with four monoclonal antibodies (OKT3, OKT4, OKT8, B1) the T cells subsets populations in two cases.

[Value of parathyroid scintigraphy in preoperative localization of parathyroid adenoma. Study apropos of 138 tests].

The authors have studied, about a total of 138 exams, the value of parathyroid nuclide scan. All the patients, who had primary hyper parathyroidism, have been operated upon. The results of parathyroid scintigraphy have been compared to the results of surgical exploration. Overall sensibility of the exam has been 80%, better with the MIBI (89%) than with the Thallium (78%). The specificity has also been better with the MIBI (95%) than with the Thallium (87%) with a global result of 88%). Computerized treatment of images with automatized subtraction especially studied in Institut Jean-Godinot, Rheims, explain the quality of these results.

Epidermal growth factor receptors in breast cancer: comparison of radioligand and immunocytochemical assays.

Epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) are part of second generation biological factors that clinicians caring for breast cancer patients wish to evaluate for their prognostic value. This aim requires the standardization of methods: the radioligand assay (RLA) for the quantification of EGF binding sites was performed on membrane pellets from 261 breast cancer samples (ligand binding and hydroxylapatite separation as recommended by the EORTC Receptor Study Group); the immunocytochemical assay (ICA) for the staining of EGFR antigenic sites was performed on fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology or touch imprints from 97 surgical specimens. The percentage of EGFR positivity by RLA (specific binding higher than 1% of total radioactivity) and the EGFR positive rate by ICA (more than 5% of stained cells) were respectively 43% and 38%. For 61 cases assayed on the same patient both methods revealed a concordance of 85%. Our results show that both methods are complementary and give quantitative data and information on tumor heterogeneity when they are performed in parallel. The next step of this study will be to determine the prognostic value of EGFR in these subpopulations of tumors for the adjustment of adjuvant treatment.

Cytogenetic changes in 67 cranial and spinal meningiomas: relation to histopathological and clinical pattern.

The cytogenetic analysis of 67 meningiomas (58 intracranial and 9 spinal tumors) identified chromosomal abnormalities in 63% of cases. When chromosomes involved in numerical and structural changes with a frequency of more than one standard deviation above the mean were considered, distinct cytogenetic patterns could be identified according to sex, anatomical location and histology. The chromosomes more frequently affected were 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 14, 15, 19, 22, Y. No conclusion could be drawn regarding the prognostic significance of these karyotypic alterations.
