Laparoscopic diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis.

Abdominal tuberculosis (TB) is an uncommon condition in Western societies although Europe and America have noted an increase of this condition in immigrants and AIDS patients. This report documents three diagnosed cases of abdominal TB over a 12-month period in a Melbourne western suburbs teaching hospital which services a large migrant population. We also review the literature on this condition. If migrants present with diffuse abdominal symptoms, the diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis should always be considered. Laparoscopy should replace diagnostic laparotomy as the definitive diagnostic tool.

Duodenal leiomyosarcoma as a cause of retroperitoneal sepsis.

The case of a patient with a duodenal leiomyosarcoma presenting with sepsis is presented. The necrotic centre of the tumour communicated with the lumen of the duodenum without causing duodenal obstruction. Resection of the duodenum with tumour offers the only chance of cure.

Neck sprains after road traffic accidents: a modern epidemic.

This study was carried out to determine the incidence of soft tissue injuries of the cervical spine after road traffic accidents and to assess whether the incidence had changed with time. The results show that there has been a progressive increase since 1982 in the number of patients seen in accident and emergency departments with a neck sprain after road traffic accidents. The results suggest that the increase is not necessarily due to the introduction of seat belts, but that the relentless increasing epidemic may be due to other factors.

Potential value of immunoperoxidase technique in assessment of genital herpes.

Cervicovaginal smears from 86 patients with suspicious genital herpes were screened by routine Papanicolaou stain. The slides were then destained and restained by a commercial immunoperoxidase kit for the detection of herpes simplex virus. Results were compared with standard viral cultures performed on the same lesions. A statistically significant difference (P less than 0.05) was observed between the results of Papanicolaou-stained cytology and the immunoperoxidase technique. This study suggests that the immunoperoxidase technique is a rapid and reliable method of confirming a suspected diagnosis of herpetic infection. It is particularly useful in those patients without prenatal care who present in early labor when a rapid diagnostic test is required.
