The AA. demonstrate with this communication the validity of the needle biopsie for the diagnosis of neoplasms. They had used it for the breast, thyroid, flg and some other superficial tumefactions. In the mass-screening for the feminine neoplasms the clinical examination and the needle biopsy are very good method for a careful diagnosis.
A series of 624 cases of breast pain examined over a period of 5 years is reviewed in the light of age, fecundity, side affected, and occupation. The gynaecological evidence made it clear that most cases where attributable to hormone disorders. In particular, there were no instances in which initial cancer was detected as a result of the pain symptom. The findings are discussed in the light of the literature.
The causes of neoplasia are discussed with particular reference to viruses. Stress is laid on some differences between the mainly cytolytic action of viruses in man and their possible cancerigenic power. It is felt that neoplasia arises from a variety of aetiologies, mostly of an irritative nature, coupled with a single, final pathogenetic mechanism linked to chromosome changes that do not result in the death of the cell.
