[Pituitary-gonadal hormonal evaluation in male patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis].

Pituitary-gonadal plasmatic hormonal values were measured in 26 alcoholic cirrhotic males and 20 healthy subjects. Total testosterone and luteinizing hormone mean levels were lower in the cirrhotic group (p < 0.05). Estradiol and prolactin were significant higher (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001, respectively). Follicle stimulation hormone mean values were normal. Pituitary-gonadal axis luteinizing hormone-testosterone and follicle stimulating hormone-estradiol were abnormal since the retrofeedback mechanism failed to work in each system. These results show a wide disturbance of the sexual hormonal function in our patients which certainly contributes to puzzle the complexity of the clinical and therapeutic aspects in these kind of patients.

[The use of recombinant interferon alfa-2b in the follow-up of patients laryngectomized for advanced stage carcinoma].

The AA. report the results of an experimental investigation on 60 subjects who underwent surgery for advanced stage carcinoma of the glottic larynx and treated with alpha 2b recombinant interferon at the dosage of 3,000,000 ul three times a week, before a six-months follow-up. The patients were examined also as to the respiratory functionality and the monitoring of some biological markers of cancers (CEA, TPA, Ca 125, Ca 15.3). The AA. support the satisfactory tolerability of alpha interferon which showed expected side effects; these effects were controlled by the symptomatic treatment, and their metabolic parameters as well as the ones related to the respiratory functionality kept always their valves in the average. The monitoring of biological markers, seems to support a real usefulness in the treatment with alpha interferon, even if a statistically meaningful record couldn't be noticed.

[Determination of urinary excretion of iodine in cordarone induced hyperthyroidism].

It is well known that amiodarone, an antiarrythmic drug containing iodine, can induce in some subjects thyroid function alterations: hyperthyroidism in patients resident in iodine-deficient areas and hypothyroidism in those with sufficient iodine intake. We attempted in this study to show the possibility to select the subjects at major risk of this iodine-induced hyperthyroidism, with a simple and inexpensive method such as urinary excretion iodine assay.
