Erythrocyte fatty acids were determined in patients with gall stones and carcinoma of the gallbladder. Significantly low levels of myristic acid (P < 0.01) and stearic acid (P < 0.001) and significantly high levels of palmitoleic acid (P < 0.05) and oleic acid (P < 0.01) were observed in cancer patients. Arachidonic and linolenic acid were significantly high in gallstone patients, but there was no significant difference in the lauric acid and palmitic acid levels. Thus an altered lipid metabolism in cancer patients suggest existence of a possible association between gallstones, fatty acids, and carcinoma of the gallbladder.
Samples of gall bladder bile from patients with and without carcinoma of the gallbladder were examined for lipid peroxidation (free radical oxidation) products. 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE) was found in higher concentration in the bile of patients with carcinoma of the gall bladder. There was also a highly significant difference in the concentration of HNE among carcinoma of the gall bladder, cholelithiasis and control group of patients with miscellaneous abdominal disorders. This is the first study of lipid peroxidation in carcinoma of the gall bladder.

Repeated dermal application of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH; 100 mg/kg/day) or methyl parathion (2 mg/kg/day) individually or in combination for 7, 15 and 30 days produced pathomorphological changes in skin, liver, kidney and brain of female rats along with significant enzymatic alterations in the activity of transaminase, alkaline phosphatase lactic dehydrogenase and acetylcholinesterase. The two insecticides in combination though produced severe toxicity on day 30 than at other periods, the changes were not suggestive of any additive or potentiation effect at the test doses.
In order to study the pupation site preference which is an important component of larval behaviour, pupation height was scored in Drosophila ananassae, D. bipectinata and D. malerkotliana by using a large number of strains of these species. The mean pupation height of different strains ranged from 1.1 to 8.7 mm in D. ananassae, from 0.41 to 0.75 mm in D. bipectinata and from 1.0 to 1.3 mm in D. malerkotliana. The analysis of variance and t-test were performed to test intre- and interspecies variations in pupation height. These tests revealed significant variation among three species. Significant variations among different strains of the same species were also found in D. ananassae and D. bipectinata. These observations provide evidence for intra- and interspecies variations in pupation height in Drosophila. Variations among different strains of the same species in pupation height are attributable to genetic heterogeneity among the strains.
Ziram, a dithiocarbamate fungicide, is extensively used in crop protection. Daily oral doses of ziram (5 and 25 mg kg(-1) day(-1)) for 30, 60 and 90 days produced significant mortality in male rats. The fungicide also caused a significant increase in the thyroid:body weight ratio, histological changes, and a reduced activity of thyroid (125)I uptake and protein bound (125)I. However, the animals did not show any change in the clinical enzyme profile of the liver, serum and brain. It is believed that ETU, the degradation product of ziram and a known antithyroid compound, is the causative agent for the high mortality, as well as for the pronounced thyrostatic and hepatotoxic effects found in the experimental animals.

The effect on total serum cholesterol and its lipoprotein fractions of supplementation of the diet with amla (Emblica officinalis, Gaertn., the Indian gooseberry) was studied in normal and hypercholesterolaemic men aged 35-55 years. The supplement was given for a period of 28 d in the raw form. Both normal and hypercholesterolaemic subjects showed a decrease in cholesterol levels. Two weeks after withdrawing the supplement, the total serum cholesterol levels of the hypercholesterolaemic subjects rose significantly almost to initial levels.

Ninety-five healthy volunteers and 515 patients with problems other than those of the biliary tract were examined using real-time, gray-scale, B-mode ultrasonography. Eighty-two patients (13.44%) were found to have asymptomatic gallbladder disease: 68 (11.14%) had cholelithiasis, 5 (0.81%) had acalculus cholecystitis, and 2 (0.32%) had polyps. Three cases of carcinoma of the gallbladder were also detected, suggesting that ultrasound examination of the high-risk population in an endemic area should not be confined to the disease concerned but that the gallbladder of such patients should also be screened to pick up asymptomatic gallbladder disease. Hence ultrasound can be used as a screening modality for the early detection of carcinoma of the gallbladder.
Oral cancer is one of the commonest cancers among males in India. This study was carried out to evaluate the demographics, risk profile, clinicopathologic features, and treatment outcome in young patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tongue. Patients under the age of 35 years with SCC of the tongue presenting between 1982 and 1996 were identified using institutions centralized electronic database. Demographic, clinical, and pathologic characteristics were abstracted from the case records. Survival was calculated by Kaplan-Meier method. One hundred and fifteen patients with histologically confirmed SCC of the tongue were analyzed. The mean age at presentation was 30.5 years with a 1.7:1 male to female ratio. Prior exposure to tobacco and alcohol was noted in 58 (50.5%) patients. At presentation, 70 (60.9%) were in stages III and IV, and 59 (51.3%) patients had regional lymph node involvement. The overall disease-free survival (DFS) at 3 and 5 years were 63% and 54.9%, respectively. A statistically significant difference in DFS was seen between patients with N(0) and N(1) disease compared to N(2) or N(3) disease. Various other factors like age, sex, habits, and stage of the disease were found to have no significant effect on DFS. Results of the present study suggest that contrary to the belief, the survival among young patients is almost similar to that in older patients.
The study aims to evaluate the survival and prognosis of patients with malignant phyllodes tumor. Between 1982 and 1998, 37 women with malignant phyllodes tumor were treated at the Regional Cancer Center, Trivandrum. Twelve patients were recurrent. Survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Patient, disease, and treatment factors were compared using log-rank test. The Cox-proportional hazard model was employed to identify the prognostic factors. Thirty-six patients had surgery. Twenty-five patients received postoperative radiotherapy, and 2 received chemotherapy in addition. The median follow-up was 43 months (range 1-170 months). Eight patients failed locally, and 7 of these were successfully salvaged by surgery. The 5-year overall survival was 74.2% (95% CI, 0.44 to 0.89), whereas 5-year disease-free survival was 59.6% (95% CI, 0.39 to 0.7). The margin of surgical excision was found to be the only independent prognostic factor (p=0.003). However, patients with tumor size more than 5 cm (hazard ratio 2.9) were found to have increased hazard, whereas those receiving adjuvant radiotherapy (hazard ratio 0.6), married women (hazard ratio 0.4), and those women over the age of 35 years (hazard ratio 0.7) showed a decreased hazards. Cystosarcoma phyllodes is a rare malignancy of the female breast. Surgery with adequate margins is the primary treatment. Adjuvant radiotherapy appears to improve the disease-free survival.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the accuracy and reliability of ultrasound (US)-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) over blind aspiration in gallbladder masses. STUDY DESIGN: We performed FNAC in 107 cases of carcinoma of the gallbladder; blind aspiration was done in 71 patients (66.36%) and US-guided aspiration in 36 (33.64%). In cases where FNAC after the first aspiration showed the aspirate to be inflammatory, acellular (inconclusive) or suspicious for malignancy, FNAC was repeated under US guidance. Diagnosis was later confirmed by histopathology in all cases. RESULTS: After the first aspiration, gallbladder malignancy was confirmed in 77 (71.96%) cases. Of these 77 cases, 34 underwent US-guided aspiration, and the remaining 43 underwent blind aspiration. Cases with inflammatory or acellular (inconclusive) aspirates or that were suspicious for malignancy after the first aspiration underwent a second aspiration under ultrasonic guidance. On the second aspiration of 30 cases, 16 (53.33%) proved to be of adenocarcinoma, 7 (23.33%) were suspicious for malignancy, 5 (16.66%) were inflammatory, and 2 (6.66%) were acellular. Diagnosis was later confirmed by histopathology in all cases. US-guided FNAC had diagnostic accuracy of 95% as compared to 60% on blind aspiration. There was no major complication or needle tract recurrence of the disease. CONCLUSION: US-guided FNAC is safe, rapid, reliable, cost-effective and accurate in diagnosing gallbladder carcinoma.
