Carcinogenicity of phenacetin: long-term feeding study in B6c3f1 mice.

Groups of 52 B6C3F1 mice of each sex were maintained on a diet containing 1.25 or 0.6% phenacetin for 96 weeks and then fed a basal diet for 8 weeks. Control groups consisted of 50 mice of each sex and were fed a basal diet for 104 weeks. All animals were killed at the end of the experiment and all organs were examined histopathologically. Mice that died during the experiment were also autopsied and those that survived for more than 57 weeks, when the first tumor was observed, were also included in the effective number of mice. Tumors were found in the kidney, liver, lung, skin, hematopoietic system (leukemia or lymphoma) and occasionally in some other organs. The dose-related induction of renal cell tumors in the male mice fed phenacetin was clearly demonstrated in this experiment. Urinary bladder lesions that developed in the mice of either sex fed 1.25% phenacetin were also considered to be due to the tumorigenicity of phenacetin. Tumors of other organs in either the phenacetin-treated or the control group were regarded as strain-related spontaneous tumors of B6C3F1 mice.

[Surface ultrastructural study on the human endometrial interstitium using digestion method (author's transl)].

A scanning electron microscopic study on the human endometrium, using Evan's method and modifications, revealed the following findings. a) 8N . HCl-Collagenase method: High-speed digestion of the specimen made the determination of the adequate digestion time difficult, due to conc. HCl and high processing temperature. b) 1N . HCl-Collagenase method: Long digestion time produced many artifacts as shrinkage of the cells or formation of small holes on them. c) Tripsin-Collagenase method: Tissue breaking often resulted before the adequate digestion. d) Hyaluronidase-Collagenase method: This is most satisfactory in classifying glands and vessels, and digestion time is the shortest of all methods.

Citric acid concentration in subclinical mastitic milk.

The effect of subclinical mastitis on the citric acid concentration of cow's milk was studied by comparing milk from the mastitic quarter with that from a healthy quarter of the same udder. Forty-two pairs of fore-milk from the morning milking of 17 cows were examined and the citric acid content was measured by an automated carboxylic acid analyzer. The citric acid concentration deceased in subclinical mastitic milk and the extent of decrease was proportional to the degree of mastitis as expressed by the quarter difference value in concentration of Na + Cl in mM/l, i.e. the increase in the Na and Cl concentrations in the abnormal milk over that found in normal milk from the same udder. The correlation coefficient between the quarter difference value of Na + Cl and the value for citric acid was -0.77, (d.f. = 46, P less than 0.001) and a linear regression equation was obtained. The result showed clearly that subclinical mastitis is one of the causes of variation in the citric acid content of cow's milk. The quantitative change in citric acid concentration in subclinical mastitic milk is discussed with reference to the admixture theory for the formation of abnormal milk.

Follow-up study of ASO, ADN-B and ASK levels in children with rheumatic fever.

In a total of 6 patients with rheumatic fever, antistreptolysin O (ASO), antistreptodeoxyribonuclease-B (ADNase-B) and antistreptokinase (ASK) titer was followed up for 3 months to 6 years. The mean periods of time of normalization of these serological tests were 4 months in ASO, 35 months in ADNase-B. In ASK, the period varied vastly in the range from 5 weeks to 4 years 1 month. Clinically it is not so easy to differentiate rheumatic heart disease from mitral valve disease of unknown etiology. In the case of high ADNase-B level, the patients my be considered to have been attacked by rheumatic fever sometime during a preceding period of as long as about 35 months.

Evaluation of left ventricular performance and of its reserve by radionuclide angiocardiography: comparison with other methods.

This study was performed, i) to compare radionuclide angiocardiography with the other methods, and ii) to evaluate its usefulness in investigating left ventricular performance and its reserve. Radionuclide angiocardiography, chest X-ray film, chest X-ray cinegraphy, echocardiography, two-dimensional echocardiography, pulsed Doppler flowmetry, cardiokymography, myocardial imaging, contrast ventriculography and coronary arteriography were performed (:also at exercise) in 105 subjects including various kinds of cardiac patients. Radionuclide angiocardiography could be performed both at rest and at exercise, contrary to invasive methods. In detailed analysis of left ventricular mechanics in non-ischemic heart disease, echocardiography at rest and at exercise may be appropriate, because of its high image resolution. In evaluation of ischemic heart diseases, radionuclide angiocardiography at rest and at exercise might be appropriate, because of bidirectional informations and its high success rate. Two-dimensional echocardiography with M-mode echocardiography might compensate for it, particularly for continuous informations during exercise. Detection of regional wall motion dysfunction at exercise is more specific than exercise ECG and is more sensitive than exercise myocardial imaging. From many kinds of examinations, appropriate one should be selected according to the purpose of investigators. Much more technical progress in these methods can be expected.
