[Comparative study of preparations of sodium and magnesium valproate (VPA) in treatment of patients with epileptic seizures].

A double blind cross over trial of Sodium Valproate (Na VPA) vs Magnesium Valproate (Mg VPA) was performed in 122 patients affected by focal or generalized epilepsies. Only modest differences resulted from the comparison between the two drugs: retention was 8% superior in patients treated with Mg VPA, the number of critic episodes and the quantification of interictal events was significantly lower in patients affected by focal epilepsy treated with Mg VPA. The incidence of side effects was the same for the two drugs.

Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis, a model of demyelination in central nervous system (CNS).

Different forms of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis were obtained in 31 guinea pigs. Four groups of animals were studied: 7 adult Hartley guinea pigs (Group 1), 12 adult Hartley guinea pigs (Group 2), 6 juvenile strain 2 guinea pigs (Group 3), 6 juvenile strain 13 guinea pigs (Group 4). The increment of the antigenic load induced different disease courses in the animals. The different disease courses were attributed to differential inactivation of the cell-mediated response to the injected antigens. The intraneural injection of serum withdrawn from guinea pigs affected by EAE induced demyelination in the optic nerve fibers of healthy rats. Areas of demyelination with naked axons were evident 30 days following the injection when Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) delays were of as much as 27 msec. Our experiments demonstrated the activity of EAE sera (probably antiGal-Cer antibodies) on the myelin sheats of nervous fibers.

Comparison of event related potentials (ERPs) distributions obtained with three reference systems: linked binaural, mean reference, extracephalic.

Event related potentials (ERPs) to auditory and visual oddball paradigms were recorded from 19 scalp derivations in 10 controls. Three different reference systems were used: the linked earlobes (LE), the computer calculated mean reference (MR), and a calibrated sterno-vertebral extracephalic reference (EC). The distribution of ERPs was represented on single plane maps (quadratic interpolation, 4-NN method). With LE reference N2, P3a-P3b had no polarity reverted counterparts on the scalp. With EC reference a negativity was recorded on T3-T4 (and partly T5-T5) derivations with the same latency as P3a-P3b vertex component. With MR the N2, P3a-P3b components at vertex were paralleled by polarity reverted counterparts on anterior frontal, temporal and occipital derivations.
