In general, the breasts themselves of Japanese women are small because their breast fatty tissues are not so developed as those of Caucasian women. Therefore, conventional mammogram tends to show a poor contrast of a tumor in the surrounding breast tissues. In order to overcome the poor contrast, we have been taking the picture of compression spot by a special small cone. Our compression spot studies made it possible to show the margin of the tumor shadow more clearly and to reveal the features of minute calcification more precisely. As the results of our experience using these procedures, we believe that the compression spot studies following the conventional mammograms are the most useful diagnostic technique for breast cancers. In addition to describe the clinical significance of the X-ray examination for breast cancers, we also discuss the mammographical differential diagnosis between the cancers and benign lesions mimicking cancers.
A simple and rapid method for apolipoprotein analysis in serum high-density lipoproteins (HDL) has been developed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with sodium phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) containing 0.1% sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) as eluent. In contrast to the use of urea solution as an eluent, apolipoproteins can be analysed by applying an incubation mixture of HDL and the eluent buffer. A TSK-GEL column of G3000SW was found to be more profitable than G2000SW or G4000SW for analysis of HDL apolipoproteins. Elution patterns monitored by absorbance at 280 nm using a G3000SW column can give precise quantitative as well as qualitative information about apolipoproteins of molecular weight between 10(4) and 10(5). HPLC patterns of HDL apolipoproteins were compared between individual human subjects with various diseases. Elution profiles for lipid components in an incubation mixture were also examined.

A Ni-45 wt% Ti (Ni-50 at % Ti) alloy was cast into molds of magnesia and silica investments by use of a dental argon-arc pressure casting machine with a copper crucible . The castings exhibited shape memory properties. The shape recovery process was sharper in the specimens cast in magnesia investment molds than in those cast in silica (phosphate-bonded) investment molds. The latter casting had a hard region of the periphery, suggesting that shape recovery process may be affected by reaction of molten metal with silica. Furthermore, the alloy possessed the adequate mechanical properties for consideration as crown-and-bridge prostheses.

Hyperfine surface layer properties of three types of dental composite resins, highly-filled, conventional, and micro-filled resins, were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ESCA) by a combination of X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). X-ray diffraction and SEM analysis showed clearly that each resin has different characteristics of SiO2 particle size and distribution. ESCA depth resolution with argon ion etching indicated that, in contrast to conventional and microfilled resins, carbon due to polymers of highly-filled resin decreases dramatically with increasing depth in the nanometer range of the resin-rich surface layer.
A simple and rapid method for the analysis of apolipoproteins in high density lipoprotein (HDL) by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been developed (Kinoshita et al. (1983) J. Biochem. 94, 615-617). With this method, using a sodium phosphate buffer containing 0.1% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as an eluent, apolipoproteins can be analyzed from a very small amount of HDL fraction without delipidation using organic solvents. Separation profiles of apolipoproteins by this method were examined using several techniques. The elution pattern monitored by A280 can give precise quantitative as well as qualitative information about size-distribution of apolipoproteins, except for the apo C group. Moreover, separation of apo E from apo A-I was found to be improved by column elongation.

We report here an elderly woman who started vague complaints around the age of 50, was proved to be a sarcoidosis by negative skin reaction with purified protein derivative, bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy, and sarcoid lesions in biopsied liver and lymph nodes, and died of cardiac insufficiency after 15 years of the illness. Necropsy revealed a huge tumor-like left atrial thrombus with nonspecific fibrous lesions throughout the myocardium, a pulmonary hamartoma, pneumonia, liver cell necrosis, and cholecystopathy. To our knowledge, this may be the first case of myocardial sarcoidosis associated with this kind of atrial thrombus, although the sarcoidosis and thrombus may have occurred independently.
Three cases of primary Budd-Chiari syndrome were found by ultrasonic examination. These were confirmed by hepatic venography and inferior vena cavography. The ultrasound findings in these patients included communicating vessels between hepatic veins, enlarged inferior right hepatic vein, reversed blood flow in the hepatic vein, and obstruction of the inferior vena cava. With these findings, ultrasound can be used to diagnose primary Budd-Chiari syndrome without hepatic venography or inferior cavography.

Macromomycin (MCR), an unique membrane-reactive anticancer antibiotic, was incubated with murine monoclonal anti-HLA IgG1 antibody (H-1) in the presence of carbodiimide. The resulting mixture was fractionated with a Sephadex G-200 column. The first and second fractions were shown to contain MCR-(H-1) conjugate by the elution profile, as well as by the Sarcina lutea growth inhibition assay and Ouchterlony double-diffusion method. A membrane immunofluorescence test with anti-MCR and anti-mouse IgG antibodies demonstrated specific localization of MCR-(H-1) on the surface of HLA-bearing NALL -1 cells. MCR-(H-1) inhibited the growth of HLA-lacking NS-1 cells statistically less effectively than MCR alone (p less than 0.01). On the other hand, the conjugate and free MCR equally inhibited the growth and 3H-TdR incorporation of HLA-bearing NALL -1 cells. These results indicate that the antibody-bound MCR retained both MCR and antibody activities, and thus exerted antibody-targeting MCR cytotoxicity in vitro.
