Transient thyrotoxicosis associated with painless thyroiditis and low radioactive iodine uptake.

We describe a patient with transient thyrotoxicosis and low radioactive iodine uptake by the thyroid. Although the clinical course in this patient was compatible with subacute thyroiditis, she did not experience pain or tenderness in the neck. The use of thyroid hormones or iodine was excluded. The substantial level of thyroid antibody in serum was present during the entire phase of the disease. Histological findings on thyroid biopsy were characteristic of chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. Furthermore, it was remarkable that the histological abnormalities improved spontaneously during the course of several months, with the spontaneous recovery of clinical signs and biochemical abnormalities.

[A case of bilateral spontaneous external carotid-cavernous fistulae with intrahepatic gallbladder (author's transl)].

A 55-year-old female presented bilateral external ophthalmoplegias and a hypesthesia in the left face and then an intracranial bruit, bilateral conjunctival injections and bilateral chemosis. In her past history, there were right retinal hemorrhage, diabetes mellitus and hypertension but no cranial trauma. The arteriographical aspects were almost identical in both sides: selective external carotid arteriography revealed an opacification of the cavernous sinus through the ascending pharyngeal artery, the accessory meningeal artery and the middle meningeal artery, but the internal carotid arteries and the vertebral arteries did not participate in these fistulae. The association in our case of spontaneous external carotid-cavernous fistulae with intrahepatic gallbladder derived from a developmental arrest in the early stage of embryonic life suggests that spontaneous external carotid-cavernous fistula is derived from communications between extra-cranial vessels and the sinuses in the early stage of embryonic life.

Chemical control of cerebral circulation. Modification by a new vasodilator (YC-93).

This study was undertaken to investigate influences of a new vasodilator, YC-93, a derivative of 1,4-dihydropyridine, on cerebral circulation and cerebrovascular CO2 reactivity. Cerebrocortical PO2, cerebrocortical PCO2, cerebrocortical blood flow and arterial blood pressure were continuously recorded by means of a PO2 electrode, a PCO2 electrode and a plate-type crossed thermocouple flowmeter placed on an exposed pial surface of the cat brain. The changes in each parameter induced by YC-93 were compared with those induced by papaverine hydrochloride. The effects of 5% CO2 inhalation were compared before and after the intravenous injection of YC-93. YC-93 (0.01 mg/kg) showed a more marked and longer-lasting hypotensive effect that papaverine (1 mg/kg) and yet produced a significant increase in cerebrocortical PO2. After the administration of YC-93, the degree of the increase in cerebrocortical PO2 during 5% CO2 inhalation was reduced significantly in comparison with that before the administration. The above data indicates that YC-93 has a vasodilating effect on cerebral blood vessels and that the drug causes a decrease in cerebrovascular CO2 reactivity.

Early events and mechanisms in the induction of bacterial SOS functions: analysis of the phage repressor inactivation process in vivo.

Different inducing agents and treatments produced distinctly different kinetic patterns of inactivation of prophage repressor molecules. The different patterns were related to differences in the initial altered states of DNA that were produced. The timing of appearance of DNA degradation was correlated with the time needed for repressor inactivation. These characteristics suggest that all the inducing treatments lead to the formation of a final predegradative DNA structure(s) (probably involving scissions) that is acted on by specific DNases, including the recBC DNase, to produce the signals for the induction of prophage.

Inactivation of phage repressor in a permeable cell system: role of recBC DNase in induction.

UV light causes inactivation of phage (phi80) repressor molecules in a plasmolyzed, permeable cell preparation of Escherichia coli. Induction without UV irradiation occurs when the permeable cells are incubated in the presence of four deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates and ATP. The induction triggered by dNTP's requires a functional recBC gene product and is associated with degradation of the DNA replication fork. The role of recBC DNase in the induction of prophage and SOS functions in general is discussed.
