Reflectance spectrophotometric studies on mucosal pathology of the upper airway.

Reflectance spectrophotometry analysis has been applied to the human nasal mucosa in vivo to determine the objective parameters of the colors of the mucous membrane, as well as to study the hemodynamics and enzymatic activities related to respiratory chain metabolism in the nasal mucosa. In 24 normal subjects, there were three main spectral peaks: the peak at around 500 nm (PI), the smallest at 560 nm (P2) and the highest one at 660 nm (P3). In 28 patients with nasal allergy, spectral P3 shifted remarkably toward the shorter wavelength at around 640 nm, compared to that of normal subjects. Additionally, the increment of the absorption band at P2 was also observed. These phenomena could be seen in the nasal mucosa of the subjects after use of decongestant spray. Reflectance spectrophotometric analysis will serve as a non-invasive method of giving us useful information for a further understanding of the mucosal pathophysiology of the upper airway.

A case of suspected congenital rubella encephalopathy.

A case of suspected congenital rubella syndrome was reported. The patient, a 3-month-old female, was admitted because of irregular respiration. She was diagnosed as suspected congenital encephalodysplasia by CT-scan. Her condition deteriorated and she died 11 days after admission. From postmortem findings it was speculated that neuropathological findings were caused by rubella virus infection in uterus and the injury on delivery.

Nasal secretion from normal subjects.

A new method of collection of nasal secretion, by dilution with condensed mositure of the exhaled air, is described. This method may be defined as a sefl-administered nasal lavage. The method permits quantitative determination of pH, relative viscosity, and electrolyte and protein composition. Concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium, total protein, IgA, IgG, IgM, secretory compoenent and polysaccharide are reported for normal subjects. Significant correlations were noted between the relative viscosity and variables: dry weight, total protein and calcium.

A study on the relationship between adenoid vegetation and rhinosinusitis.

The relationship between adenoidal-nasopharyngeal ratios (AN ratios) and sinusitis were evaluated in 404 children. The AN ratios of children with snoring, mouth breathing, or nasal obstruction (major symptoms of adenoidal enlargement) were significantly higher than those of children without these symptoms. However, the AN ratios of children with sinusitis were almost equal to those of normal children.

Establishment of human mucosal microvascular endothelial cells from inferior turbinate in culture.

Human microvascular endothelial cells were isolated and cultured from the mucosa of inferior turbinates. Using dish-coated collagen and a medium composed of a 1:1 mixture of sarcoma 180-conditioned medium and Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (containing 10% fetal bovine serum and 75 micrograms/mL endothelial cell growth factors prepared from bovine pituitary glands), these cells grew rapidly to confluence and survived serial passages until the 16th population doubling level. The cells were identified as endothelial cells by their morphology, immunostaining of factor VIII antigen, and cytochemical staining with Ulex europeus agglutinin. Furthermore, Weibel-Palade bodies and numerous pinocytotic vesicles were confirmed by electron microscopy. Proliferation experiments demonstrated the need for either endothelial cell growth factor or tumor-conditioned medium. An exogenous matrix was also required for these cells in tissue culture. A tubule-like morphology appeared in the original monolayer of human microvascular endothelial cells after 1 month in the same plate, indicating that these cells have the ability to form tubules in the presence of sarcoma 180-conditioned medium.
