Increased urinary excretion of delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is an early biological sign of toxic lead absorption. Therefore, its determination is a very useful screening test for the periodical examination of workers exposed to lead. Previously, we developed a simplified method for determining urinary ALA without ion-exchange column. This method is based on two findings: (a) ALA-pyrrole is extractable with ethyl acetate to be separated from other Ehrlich-positive substances such as urea, and (b) the ALA-pyrrole can form a complex with the modified Ehrlich's reagent in ethyl acetate. In the present study, using this method, we determined urinary ALA of healthy adult men and estimated the normal levels for ALA. The results are as follows: (1) The urinary ALA concentration obtained from the spot urine samples of 299 workers (age: mean=37.1 years range=20-56 years) with no history of occupational lead exposure was 2.39 +/- 0.87 mg/liter (mean and standard deviation), with upper limit of 4.10 mg/liter for 95%-confidence interval. (2) The distribution of ALA in the normal spot urine was not log-normal, but normal. (3) No significant difference between the excretion level of urinary ALA and the age was observed.
The levels of hippuric acid in the urine of people exposed to toluene vapour were measured by paper chromatography, direct colorimetry, high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. The control was a similar group not exposed to toluene vapour. The values were analyzed statistically, conversion equations calculated, and the propriety of these equation discussed. Since the three chromatographic methods gave similar values, the measurement of urinary hippuric acid by these methods can be used as an index of toluene exposure. The colorimetric method gave higher levels the chromatographic methods, especially for the urine of people not exposed to toluene. This may have been due to glycine conjugates (other than hippuric acid) developing a similar color, resulting in elevated values for hippuric acid. This colorimetric method should be used with caution for biological evaluation of workers with low toluene exposure.

Immunoperoxidase intibody (IPA) test was developed for detecting antibody against transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE) virus of pigs. The IPA antibody titers in sera collected in the field from 82 pigs were approximately seven times higher than those obtained in a serum-neutralization test. The correlation between the TGE antibody concentrations in the IPA and serum neutralization tests was positive (r = +0.74). The IPA tests appears to have the potential for routine laboratory use for serologic diagnosis of TGE.

Sera and contents of the small intestine from swine inoculated with transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE) virus were examined for immunoglobulin (Ig) A antibody responses by the radioimmunoprecipitation test with antiporcine IgA serum. When swine were orally inoculated with virulent virus, IgA antibody activity was detected in the contents of the small intestine and in serum from postinoculation days 7 to 56. However, IgA antibody activity was not detected in the contents of the small intestine or serum in swine inoculated IM with attenuated virus. The Ig class of serum of swine inoculated with TGE virus was examined by gel filtration chromatography. When swine were orally inoculated with virulent virus, neutralizing antibody was always detected from both fractions of IgA and IgG Neutralizing antibody ws detected only from the IgG fraction in the serum of swine inoculated IM with attenuated virus. The molecular size of serum IgA antibody was determined by sucrose density gradient centrifugation. The titer of this antibody was the highest at a position between 10.9S- and 7S-marker protein. The antibody consisted almost exclusively of dimers. It appeared that serum IgA antibody always originated from the lymphoid tissue of the intestinal tract. This antibody was regarded as an indicator of active immunity of TGE virus.

A 51-year-old female presented herself with complaints of mis-swallowing, hoarseness, speech disturbance and right stiff shoulder of 3 months duration. She had left breast cancer operated on elsewhere 10 years previously. Pertinent neurological findings were 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th cranial nerve palsies on the right (the Collet-Sicard syndrome). Cerebral angiography, retrograde jugular venography, polytomography of the skull base and bone scintigraphy with 99mTc-MDP raised a question of metastasis of the breast cancer to the skull base of the right mastoid region. Following right retromastoidal suboccipital craniectomy, partial removal of the metastatic skull tumor of the deep mastoid region was done. No intracranial extension of the tumor was confirmed. Multiple cranial nerve palsies above mentioned resolved following irradiation with betatron of 5000 rads. Pathology report was that of metastatic adenocarcinoma to the skull, which was similar to the histology of the breast cancer resected 10 years previously. Skull base metastasis of the breast cancer causing the Collet-Sicard symdrome is rare. To the author's knowledge, only 7 cases of the Collet-Sicard syndrome caused by metastatic tumors have been reported in the English and Japanese literatures. Primary lesions were as follows: The one was from the lung and the rest were all from the prostate. We are reporting the first case of the Collet-Sicard syndrome due to metastatic adenocarcinoma of the breast to the skull base.
In Japanese-type acatalasemia erythrocytes, the presence and properties of residual catalase were determined and compared with those of normal erythrocyte catalase. Residual catalase activity was proved by titration, active staining after polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and measurement of oxygen evolution. Residual catalase protein, demonstrated by double immunodiffusion, was similar to that of normal catalase. The properties of residual catalase activity were identical with those of normal catalase activity. It occurred as three fractions of equal specific activity by DEAE column chromatography. These observations suggest that Japanese-type acatalasemia contains residual catalase with properties similar to those of normal catalase.

Acute administration of ethanol increased the cerebrocortical amino acids derived through the tricarboxylic acid cycle except for GABA and decreased the plasma alanine, valine, isoleucine, leucine, and phenylalanine whereas chronic administration of ethanol caused no significant changes in the cerebrocortical amino acids and increased the plasma glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, and ornithine, with decreases in taurine and phenylalanine. Result of this experiment suggests that the CNS-depressant effect of ethanol is related to changes in the GABA system and increased uptake by the brain of the branched-chain amino acids while the development of tolerance to ethanol is associated with cellular adaptation in the CNS.
After infection with varicella-zoster virus, HeLa and human embryo lung cells developed a receptor for the Fc portion of human and rabbit immunoglobulin G. The receptor was detected by both hemadsorption and immunofluorescence, using antibody-coated erythrocytes and heat-aggregated immunoglobulin G. However, sheep erythrocytes sensitized with F(ab')2 of anti-sheep erythrocyte antibody did not adsorb to the receptor. When cell-free varicella-zoster virus was inoculated into the HeLa cell monolayer, the Fc receptor appeared at first 6 h after infection; varicella-zoster virus antigen in the cytoplasm and detectable cytopathic effects appeared later.
