Transplacental and transcolostral immunity to pertussis in a mouse model using acellular pertussis vaccine.

The protective activity of acellular pertussis vaccine was comparable to that of whole cell vaccine against intracerebral and aerosol infection with Bordetella pertussis in mice. Suckling mice, six to 10 days old, born of mothers immunized with acellular or whole cell pertussis vaccine were challenged with an aerosol of B pertussis strain 18323, and body weight, death, leukocytosis, and viable counts in the lungs were monitored. Protective activity was transferred from mother mice to their offspring through milk and placenta (yolk sac), with substantially greater protection being transferred through the mammary gland.

Application of selected ion monitoring to determination of platelet-activating factor.

The selected ion monitoring (SIM) technique was applied to determination of platelet-activating factor (PAF) or acetyl glyceryl ether phosphorylcholine (AGEPC). Two types of PAF, 1-hexadecyl- and 1-octadecyl-2-acetyl-sn-glyceryl-3-phosphorylcholine (C16 = 0 AGEPC and C18 = 0 AGEPC), were found in human neutrophils on the challenge with ionophore A23187. The contents of C16 = 0 AGEPC in 1 X 10(7) neutrophil cells of four volunteers, respectively, were 47, 18, 59, and 73 ng and those of C18 = 0 AGEPC were 22, 4, 19, and 31 ng.

[Clinical experience with cefotiam infusions in chronic sinusitis and otitis media].

Clinical efficacy and safety of cefotiam were studied. Twelve patients with chronic sinusitis and 14 patients with chronic otitis media were intravenously given cefotiam in daily doses of 2 g for 7 to 10 days. In chronic sinusitis, clinical responses were excellent in 6 patients, good in 3 and fair in 3, the rate of satisfactory clinical responses (excellent and good) being 75%. In chronic otitis media, the responses were excellent in 5, good in 4 and fair in 5, the rate of satisfactory clinical responses being 65%. As for side effects, eruption and abdominal pain were observed in 1 patient.

[Short-term intensive chemotherapy (STIC) combined with intravenous hyperalimentation in advanced stomach cancer].

A short-term intensive chemotherapy (STIC) consisting of large dose of mitomycin C (MMC), tegafur (FT-207), streptococcus preparation picibanil (OK-432) and Krestin (PSK), combined with IVH was performed in 72 patients with advanced gastric cancer. Thirty-three patients were unresectable and 39 patients were recurrent. In this modality, an intensive chemotherapy was able to carry out, maintaining, or increasing in host immunologic parameters and body weight in spite of their disturbed condition in oral food take. Partial response was obtained in 10 of 51 evaluable cases (19.6%) and the survival period on STIC was superior to that on controls. However, no significant difference was observed between the two groups. Four patients had become to be able to take full oral food again by STIC and resulted in the removal of IVH. Hyperglycemia and septicaemia induced by IVH were observed in 9 of 72 patients (12.5%), one died of septicaemia. Full attention should be paid in the management of IVH for patients with advanced cancer.

Hereditary multisystemic degeneration with unusual combination of cerebellipetal, dentato-rubral, and nigro-subthalamo-pallidal degenerations.

An autopsy case of a 51-year-old housewife with dominantly inherited ataxia is reported. Pathologic examination revealed an unusual combination of systemic degenerations: spinocerebellar tracts, pontine basis and middle cerebellar peduncles, dentato-rubral and nigro-subthalamo-pallidal systems, upper and lower motor neurons, ascending sensory system, and optic tracts. The inferior olive and cerebellar cortex showed only a slight change. The combination of the dentato-rubral with nigro-subthalamo-pallidal degenerations in a case with cerebellipetal systemic degeneration was particularly striking. Furthermore, combined degeneration of the ocular motor nuclei, vestibular nuclear group, perihypoglossal nuclei, fastigial nucleus, medial longitudinal fasciculus, and vestibulospinal tracts occurred. According to recent experimental results, these lesions were restricted precisely to the anatomophysiologically interrelated system for the control of eye movement. The present case is considered an example of systemic degeneration as a pathologic basis for ophthalmoplegia.

[Topical administration of cefsulodin in postoperative Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection of the middle ears].

The clinical evaluation for cefsulodin (CFS) against P. aeruginosa was studied in postoperative infections of chronic otitis media by means of washing the middle ear with the drug, and the following results were obtained; CFS treatment was given to 5 cases, and the clinical responses were excellent in 4 and good in 1 case. P. aeruginosa in otorrhea was eradicated within several days, and otorrhea disappeared in all the cases. No side effect was observed in all cases.

[Immunological significance of splenectomy in gastric cancer surgery. Production of immunosuppressive factor in the spleen].

We studied immunological significance of splenectomy in gastric cancer surgery with special reference to serum suppressor factor. The results showed that the sera from splenic venous blood in advanced gastric cancer was more suppressive to PHA blastogenesis of normal lymphocytes and also higher in the values of circulating immune complexes, as compared to the sera from peripheral blood. Furthermore, the media from cultures of spleen cells of patients with advanced gastric cancer indicated to suppress PHA blastogenesis of normal lymphocytes, as compared to the media from cultures of peripheral lymphocytes of the same patients. The suppressive activity was more increased in the media from cultures of nonadherent cell population obtained from the spleen cells. From these data, it was suggested that the spleen of patients with advanced gastric cancer was capable of producing serum suppressor factor. Therefore, gastrectomy combined with splenectomy may be reasonable in patients with advanced gastric cancer.
