The pathological findings in three cases of solid and cystic tumor (SCT) of the pancreas were compared with the nuclear DNA histogram obtained by flow cytometry. One case involved malignant SCT with liver metastases. Two of the cases were benign SCT. In the malignant SCT, cellular atypia and mitotic figures were extensively observed. The proliferation index (PI) was 25, and the DNA index (DI) was 1.65. In the benign SCT, cellular atypia and mitotic figures were rarely observed. The PI was 8 and 13, respectively, and the DI was 1.0 in both cases. The proliferative activity and the biological malignant potential of the malignant SCT were thought to be higher than those of the benign SCT.
After treatment with nitrite, Chinese cabbage showed direct-acting mutagenicity on Salmonella typhimurium TA100 inducing 3100 revertants per g. One of the mutagen precursors that became mutagenic after nitrite treatment was isolated, and identified as indole-3-acetonitrile. After treatment with nitrite, 1 mg of indole-3-acetonitrile induced 17 400 revertants of TA100 and 21 000 revertants of TA98 without S9 mix.
The advantages and disadvantages of oxidative permanent and acid-type semi-permanent hair colors are evident. The former provides a longlasting "permanent" color, while the latter imparts less damage to the hair. We developed a novel acid-type hair color technology that can allow an acid dye and a metal ion to form a complex inside the hair similar to the oxidative hair color. It is well known that acid dye diffuses into the hair and creates an ionic bond with the positively charged amino acid residues of hair protein. However, the dye can be extracted easily from the hair by daily shampooing due to the weakness of the bond. In order to strengthen this bond and to prevent the extraction of the dye by shampooing, an aluminum chloride ion was chosen as the metal ion component to form the dye-metal complex. A proper composition of penetration enhancers, benzyl alcohol and ethyl alcohol, was required to allow acid dyes to interact with the aluminum chloride ion after each component penetrates deeply into the hair to form a complex inside the hair. To provide color brightness and a color longevity effect to hair color, glycolic acid was also selected due to the observation that a weak acid with a small molecular weight would enhance those effects.
BACKGROUND: Platinum drug resistance is an important problem in lung cancer chemotherapy. In this study, we examined lung-resistance protein (LRP) gene expression in vivo and in vitro in relation to platinum drug exposure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The expression levels of the LRP gene were assessed by the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, in 80 autopsy samples (40 lung tumors and 40 corresponding normal lung tissues), two lung cancer cell lines and in peripheral mononuclear cells collected from 8 lung cancer patients before and after platinum drug administration. RESULTS: The LRP gene expression levels of autopsy specimens exposed antemortem to platinum drugs were not significantly different to those of specimens without platinum drug exposure, for both lung tumors and normal lung tissues. Our results also demonstrate that LRP gene expression was not induced by platinum drugs either in vitro or in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: The present results indicate that LRP gene expression is not associated with platinum drug exposure in lung cancer.
