Efficacy of thyrotropin-releasing hormone in the treatment of cerebellar ataxia.

We report a 9-year-old girl with cerebellar ataxia in whom the administration of thyrotropin-releasing hormone was effective in the treatment of a prolonged neurologic deficit. Ataxia persisted 18 months after its acute onset of unknown origin. Concentrations of homovanillic acid and 5-hydroxy-indoleacetic acid in the cerebrospinal fluid were measured repeatedly. Changes in the 5-hydroxy-indoleacetic/homovanillic acid ratio were observed, suggesting that thyrotropin-releasing hormone improved symptoms by influencing serotonin metabolism in the central nervous system.

New model of hemorrhagic hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in newborn mice.

An easy and inexpensive method is reported for producing hemorrhagic brain damage in newborn mice, involving only exposure to hypoxia. One-day-old mice, Jcl:ICR strain, were subjected to a humidified 5% oxygen, 95% nitrogen mixture for 8 hours. After the hypoxic episode, 34% of newborn mice survived, 59% manifested cerebral parenchymal hemorrhage. Cortical hemorrhage could be detected in live mice; intracranial hemorrhage was observed through the thin skin and skull. Cortical hemorrhage usually affected the bilateral parietal regions symmetrically and neuronal destruction was observed in the deeper structures, as well as in the cerebral cortex. This pattern of damage was comparable to parasagittal cerebral injury in humans. The onset of cortical hemorrhage and neuropathology in these mice suggested that hemorrhage occurred when cerebral blood flow recovered after the hypoxic event.

MR evaluation of human anterior cruciate ligament autograft on oblique axial imaging.

PURPOSE: The purpose was to observe the changing MR appearance of stable anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) grafts on oblique axial images. METHOD: Fifty-five knees in 44 patients were studied with MRI 1-54 months after arthroscopic ACL reconstruction with double-looped autogenous semitendinosus and gracilis tendons. Knees with poor stability were excluded from this study. Examinations were performed at 0.2 T with SE proton density and T2-weighted sagittal and oblique axial images. RESULTS: High signal intensity areas covered the grafts 1-3 months after surgery. The high signal subsequently extended into the intertendinous bundles. The entire graft gradually became a low signal intensity bundle again after 12 months. Grafts were classified by their appearance on the oblique axial images. CONCLUSION: We conclude that high signal intensity can be seen within stable ACL grafts.

Diffusion-weighted echo planar imaging of the normal human cervical spinal cord.

We obtained diffusion-weighted echo planar images of the human cervical cord in vivo and correlated them with histopathologic findings. Images were obtained in 17 healthy volunteers using a 1.5 T clinical MR unit. When motion-probing gradients were added perpendicular to the long axis of the cord, the white matter was hyperintense because of anisotropic diffusion. However, the gracile fasciculus was hypointense probably due to the small diameter of neural fibers and the large extracellular space.

Pancreatic pseudoaneurysm converted from pseudocyst: transcatheter embolization and serial CT assessment.

We present a case of pancreatic pseudoaneurysm converted from a pseudocyst. Contrast-enhanced CT disclosed a round enhancing lesion at the previously identified pseudocyst, and angiography confirmed the diagnosis of a pseudoaneurysm. The pseudoaneurysm was successfully treated by arterial embolization. We believe arterial embolization to be the treatment of choice for pseudoaneurysm as a complication of pancreatitis.

Application of capacitively coupled electric field enhances periimplant osteogenesis in the dog mandible.

PURPOSE: Expeditious postoperative ingrowth of bone into dental implants is desired for clinically successful fixation of oral implants. The present study was performed to evaluate the effect of applying a capacitively coupled electric field (CCEF) on periimplant osteogenesis in the dog mandible. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve adult male beagles were used in this study. All of the premolars on both sides of the mandible were removed from each dog. A POI (Ti-6Al-4V) 3-piece implant (3.7 mm in diameter and 8.0 mm in length) whose surface had been treated with anodic oxidation was placed into each test site by self-tapping. Daily application of CCEF (8 h/day) was initiated on the day following the surgery and was continued through the day of sacrifice. A CCEF was induced by an external source delivering 10-Vp-p, 60-kHz sine-wave signals through an oral electrode plate. One side of the mandible of each dog was treated with CCEF, while the other side was not. On the control side, an oral electrode plate was attached for 8 hours per day, but CCEF was not applied. The effect of daily application of CCEF on the ingrowth of bone into the implant was examined at 14, 21, or 30 days after implant placement. A fourth control group was not treated with CCEF and was maintained for 90 days to confirm that CCEF treatment enhances bone ingrowth in dental implants. RESULTS: Daily application of CCEF significantly increased the bone-contact ratio at days 14, 21, and 30 after implant placement in comparison with the respective controls. The bone-area ratios of the 14- and 21-day CCEF-treated groups were significantly larger than those of the respective controls and were similar to those of the 90-day control group. CONCLUSION: CCEF treatment increases periimplant osteogenesis in the dog mandible, confirming its usefulness in oral implantology.

Enhancing osseointegration by capacitively coupled electric field: a pilot study on early occlusal loading in the dog mandible.

Expeditious postoperative appositional growth of bone to dental implants is desired for clinically successful fixation of oral implants. The present study was performed to evaluate the effect of applying a capacitively coupled electric field (CCEF) followed by functional loading on peri-implant osteogenesis in the dog mandible. Nine adult beagles were used in this study. All premolars on both sides of the mandible were removed from each dog. A physio-odontlam implant (POI, Ti-6AI-4v) with 2 stages (3.7 mm in diameter and 8.0 mm in length), whose surface had been treated with anodic oxidation and sandblasted, was placed into each test site by self-tapping. Daily application of CCEF (8 hours per day) was initiated on the day following surgery and continued for 14 days or 21 days. After CCEF treatment was finished for each period, a prosthetic abutment and a straight post were placed on each implant. Four days after placement of the post, implants were placed under functional loading for 30 days. The dogs were then sacrificed, and histologic and radiographic studies of the mandible were performed. Relatively well calcified, mature bone with a lamellar-like structure was observed by contact microradiography and histologic study (double staining with basic fuchsin-methylene blue) of the peri-implant region on the CCEF-treated samples. In contrast, poorly calcified, immature bone without a lamellar structure was observed in control sites not treated with CCEF. The bone area ratios of the CCEF-treated sides were larger than those of control sides. These results suggest that the application of CCEF after implant placement may enhance peri-implant osteogenesis, even with functional loading.

Multiseptate gallbladder: computed tomographic appearance.

We report a case of multiseptate gallbladder in a 43-year-old female with ultrasonographic and computed tomographic (CT) findings. The postcontrast CT delineated multiple septations with honeycomb appearance in the gallbladder. This finding should raise the suspicion of multiseptate gallbladder.
