Development of the epididymal adipose tissue in monosodium glutamate-induced obese mice.

Obesity was induced in neonatal mice by subcutaneous injections of monosodium glutamate (MSG) at an early neonatal stage. The process of adipocyte formation was studied comparatively in the developing epididymal adipose tissue of the MSG-treated mice and in normal mice during the period from the 6th to the 100th postnatal day. Tritiated thymidine autoradiographic studies showed that cell proliferation activity was the highest on the 6th postnatal day both in the MSG-treated and the control mice. In normal mice, however, cell proliferation took place less frequently after 6 days and had almost ceased after 49 days. In the obese mice, as evidenced by relatively high labeling indices, cell proliferation continued to occur even after 49 days. Ultimately there was no difference in the number of adipocytes counted by Hirsch's method in the MSG-treated and the control mice at the 100th postnatal day. The storage of fat droplets became more noticeable in obese mice than in normal mice after 35 days. The mean size of fat droplets of the obese mice was twice as large as that in normal mice on the 49th postnatal day. These results indicate that the MSG-induced obesity is of the hypertrophic type.

Tritiated thymidine autoradiographic study on postnatal development of epididymal adipose tissue in the normal mouse.

Cell proliferation was studied in the developing epididymal adipose tissue of mice by means of 3H-thymidine autoradiography. 4 mice in each age group were killed 30 min after a single injection of 3H-thymidine given at the 6th, 10th, 16th, 21st, 28th, 35th, 42nd, 49th or 56th postnatal day. The labeling index of the adipose tissue was high for several postnatal days but it was highest on the 6th day. The labeling index decreased thereafter, and cell proliferation appeared to almost cease after 56 days. Another 16 mice were given a single injection of 3H-thymidine at 6 days old; pairs of animals were killed at 30 min, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 14 and 18 days later. From the 2nd to 6th days of pulse labeling, the number of labeled fat cells increased significantly, whereas the number of labeled poorly differentiated mesenchymal cells decreased reciprocally. The labeling index of fat cells remained unchanged from the 6th to the 18th day. These results suggest that there is a population of fat cell-precursor cells in the mesenchymal tissue of the new born mouse, and that it takes 2-6 days for the precursor cells to become mature fat cells in the epididymal fatty tissue.

Congenital internal mammary artery-to-pulmonary artery fistulas: a case report.

A case of congenital internal mammary artery-to-pulmonary artery fistulas is reported. The patient was a 7-year-old boy in whom this condition was suspected from an abnormal shadow in the left upper lung field upon chest X-ray examination and continuous murmur. A definite diagnosis was made by selective angiography of the internal mammary artery. This condition is extremely rare. Our patient is the youngest among the 16 cases which have been reported so far in the English literature. Surgical treatment may be indicated because there is a risk of rupture of the fistula, endarteritis, and congestive heart failure.

Microvascular anastomosis using carbon dioxide (CO2) laser: evaluation by SEM after corrosion cast.

In order to compare the carbon dioxide laser-assisted microvascular anastomosis (CO2 LAMA) with conventional microvascular sutured anastomosis (CMSA), 40 microarterial anastomoses were performed in Wistar albino rats. At different time intervals from zero to four weeks after the procedure, the anastomoses were examined under the scanning electron microscope (SEM) after resin corrosion cast (Mercox). CO2 LAMA was easier and less time-consuming than CMSA, with the same patency rate. Healing of the lumen surface was similar in both procedures, suggesting that CO2 LAMA can be reliably used in microvascular anastomosis.

Granule cell deficit in the mouse cerebellum after total asphyxia.

The cerebellar granule cell continues to proliferate after birth in the mouse as well as in the human being. Total asphyxia in the neonatal period in 40 mice resulted in a 13% reduction in the granule cell number and a 7% reduction in the Purkinje cell number. Differential effects on granule cell and Purkinje cell populations were noted when particular cerebellar lobules were examined.

Dendritic development of cortical neurons of mice subjected to total asphyxia: a Golgi-Cox study.

The effect of total asphyxia on dendritic development of the pyramidal cells in the mouse cerebrum was investigated using the Golgi-Cox method. Although neonatal asphyxia did not alter the number of basal dendrites arising from the cell bodies, the dendrites in the 20-day-old treated animals were significantly shorter than those in the controls. Even at 60 days, the number of longer dendrites in the treated mice was significantly less than that in the controls.
