Euthanasia is the main theme in the crime novels. The sisterhood by the American author Michael Palmer, published in 1982 and Morfindoktoren nekter seg skyldig (The morphine doctor denies his guilt) by the Norwegian author Waldemar Brøgger, published in 1958. In spite of differences between these two novels in time and space, they show many similarities. In this article the two novels, both of which have physicians as the main characters, are compared. Biographic information on the authors confirms the hypothesis of a close relationship between authors and their heroes in the criminal literature. The criminal literature has many points of connection in the medicine. These two examples show how even important and difficult medical ethical issues can be a subject for a crime novel.

Norwegian physicians have changed their smoking habits to a greater degree than the general population. The fact that relatively few physicians now smoke daily makes it especially interesting to study those who continue to smoke. Differences between groups with varying smoking habits have been studied on the basis of data from the Norwegian Physician Survey. The main sample consisted of 1,047 out of 1,476 randomly selected Norwegian physicians (71%) who responded in 1993 to a mailed questionnaire on lifestyle. 8% of the female and 14% of the male physicians characterized themselves as daily smokers, and 9 and 13%, respectively as occasional smokers. The highest fraction of daily smokers is found among surgical specialists (21%) and the lowest among specialists in community medicine. Compared with the non-smokers, the daily smokers drink more coffee and alcohol, use more benzodiazepines, and have a more sedentary life-style.
Over time an evolution has taken place in the nature of medical publishing. From being more-or-less exclusively channels for professional information to clinicians, medical journals have become tools in the process of qualifying researchers. Bringing credits to authors has become one of the main tasks of scientific publishing. This evolution can be described as a shift from a main focus on the reader as the recipient of information (reader-orientation) to greater emphasis on the author, who gets merits for publishing scientific papers (author-orientation). The scientific community does not live up to the international guidelines, which require substantial contributions in order to obtain authorship credits. The result has been author inflation and honorary authorship. The concept of authorship has changed, which may imperil the integrity of the scientific article. Increasing consciousness and changing attitudes are needed among researchers, medical schools and granting agencies. A stricter and more traditional definition of authorship should be established.
