[The gamma ray peak efficiency determination for volume samples using a radioactive point source (author's transl)].

The peak efficiencies for volume samples in gamma spectrometry of environmental radioactive materials have been determined using a radioactive standard point source. The advantages of the method, as compared with conventional calibration method using standard volume sources, are as follows; 1) The peak efficiencies can be obtained with high accuracy and precision, 2) To be applied easily to any sample container being axial symmetry, 3) The correction for self-absorption can be performed by the simple calculation. On the other hand, the application of the method is restricted to only the cylindrical or coaxial detector.

Phosphodiesterase from cultured tobacco cells. Physical and chemical properties.

Phosphodiesterase isolated from suspension cultures of tobacco cells showed high affinity for concanavalin A-Sepharose and gave single superimposed bands of protein and carbohydrates on disc gel electrophoresis, suggesting that it is a glycoprotein. It contains 14% carbohydrate by weight, and has relatively high contents of basic and aromatic amino acids. Its isoelectric point is at pH 8.8, and the molecular weight of its subunits was estimated as 72 000 from a plot of the retardation coefficient on sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis versus the molecular weight. The enzyme was catalytically active in an immobilized state on a concanavalin A-Sepharose column.

Gastrointestinal bleeding following head injury: a clinical study of 433 cases.

The incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding was studied in 433 patients with head injury. This complication has a strong correlation to the severity of the injury. Other factors such as shock, arterial pO2 and glucocorticoid administration were not related to incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding. Forty per cent of patients developed bleeding within 48 hours and approximately and additional 40% within one week. Only nine patients required more than 1,000 ml of blood, and eight of these died and one requiring emergency abdominal surgery lived.

Acute gastroduodenal lesions in head injury. An endoscopic study.

Early and serial endoscopic examinations were performed in patients with head injury to determine the actual incidence and course of the acute gastroduodenal lesions. Acute gastroduodenal lesions were found in high incidence of 35 in 47 patients (75%). It was stressed that the lesions were found in 16 of 25 cases without obvious gastrointestinal bleeding. The lesions were mainly found in the stomach (78%) and of these lesions erosive gastritis was seen in the greatest frequency. Gastric ulcer was found in 11 patients. Erosive gastritis was found within one week after the trauma, while gastric ulcer usually developed after one week. Erosive gastritis was mainly located in the body of the stomach and usually healed within ten days. Gastric ulcer also had a good course. There was no case in which the erosive lesion extended to the ulcer. Among 22 patients with gastrointestinal bleeding, three had intractable bleeding. Steroid administration seemed to have little effect on the occurrence of acute gastroduodenal lesions.

A novel phosphodiesterase from cultured tobacco cells.

A novel phosphodiesterase was purified from cultured tobacco cells to a state which appeared homogeneous on polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The enzyme hydrolyzed various phosphodiester and pyrophosphate bonds, including p-nitrophenyl thymidine 5'-phosphate, p-nitrophenyl thymidine 3'-phosphate, cyclic nucleotides, ATP, NAD+, inorganic pyrophosphate, dinucleotides, and poly(adenosine diphosphate ribose), which is a polymer synthesized from NAD+. However, it did not hydrolyze highly polymerized polynucleotides. The molecular weight of the native enzyme was estimated as 270 000 to 280 000 by gel filtration on Sephadex G-200 and Bio-Gel A-5m. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis indicated that the enzyme was composed of subunits with molecular weights calculated to be 75 000. The enzyme did not require divalent cations for activity being fully active in the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. The pH optimum for the enzyme was approximately 6 with p-ni-trophenyl thymidine 5'-phosphate or adenosine cyclic 3',5'monophosphate, and 5.3 with NAD+. Double reciprocal plots of the initial velocity against the concentration of p-nitrophenyl thymidine 5'-phosphate gave two apparent Km values of 0.17 and 1.3 mM, suggesting the presence of at least two active sites.

Five cases of tick bite.

Reported here are five cases of tick bite: in a 2-year-old boy, a 3-year-old girl, a 72-year-old woman, a 29-year-old woman, and a 51-year-old man. Four cases are thought to have occurred in a mountain area while one occurred in a city garden. None were accompanied with severe systemic symptoms or deuteropathies. The parasites were identified as the adult female tick Ixodes ovatus Neumann (3 cases) and Ixodes nipponensis Kitaoka et Saito (2 cases), which are commonly distributed in Japan.

Lactate formation by the avian lung tissue.

The activities of formation of lactate and pyruvate were studied along with the development of chickens, Gallus domestica. In the lung the activity of lactate formation was highest in the embryo at 13th to 16th days of incubation, then the activity decreased as the development went on and continued to decrease even after the hatching. The change of the activity of pyruvate formation was almost parallel with that of lactate formation. On the other hand, in the liver the activities of formation of lactate and pyruvate remained constant and did not show such changes as observed for the lung.
