Pseudoaneurysm of the dorsalis pedis artery.

Two cases of post-traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the dorsalis pedis artery are presented. Both were managed by resection and vascular reconstruction with a successful result. It is suggested that this, rather than resection and ligation, is the preferred treatment in these cases.

Lipoprotein metabolism and lipoprotein lipase in severe cystic acne.

In severe cystic acne we found low levels of high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) and apolipoprotein A (Apo-A) in the presence of normal total lipids. In a larger number of patients, we always observed significantly lower levels of HDL-C and Apo-A than in either age-matched controls or subjects with acne vulgaris. Since lipoprotein lipase is one major determinant of HDL concentration, we assayed the lipase activity in liver and extra-hepatic tissues by the method of Krauss et al. There was highly significant less total and hepatic lipase activity than in age-matched controls. HDL distribution was examined by zonal ultracentrifugation and a decrease in the HDL2 subclass was discovered. Since HDL are inversely correlated to atherosclerosis, cystic acne is one risk factor for atherosclerosis. The linkage between low HDL levels and severe cystic acne should be further investigated.

Effect of unlabeled indium oxine and indium tropolone on the function of isolated human lymphocytes.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of indium oxine and indium-tropolone complexes (nonradiolabeled) on the function of isolated human lymphocytes. peripheral lymphocytes were obtained from 15 normal volunteers and incubated with indium oxine or indium tropolone according to the standard techniques currently used when cells are radiolabeled for subsequent in vivo studies. The phytohemagglutinin-induced (PHA) lymphocyte transformation and a more specific lymphocyte functional test (the mixed lymphocyte reaction) were performed following incubation with the indium complexes. The results indicate that PHA transformation is not affected by either indium oxine or indium tropolone, whereas both chelates reduced the mixed lymphocyte reaction. This suggests that these substances have a selective toxic effect only on a functionally distinct lymphocyte subset (i.e., the cytotoxic T cells) and indicates that there is no significant difference between the two indium chelates in terms of their effect on lymphocyte function.

Homing and circulation of indium-111-labelled leucocytes. A post-mortem study.

The history of a patient with a suspected ischemic brain infarct undergoing an indium-111-tropolone white cell labelled test is reported. The patient, who died 12 h after injection of the labelled cells, suffered of a brain haemorrhage. The post-mortem examination has allowed for the first time the measurement of radioactivity in different organs following the injection of indium-111-labelled leucocytes. High radioactivity was found only in tissues affected by inflammatory processes and in the lymphonodes draining the corresponding areas. This report clearly indicates the importance of this method for the study of white cell localization and circulation to the sites of infections.

The everted rectal stump technique for the application of the distal pursestring suture in the construction of stapled anastomoses.

The everted rectal stump technique for the application of the distal pursestring suture was used successfully in three patients to perform a low stapled reconstructive anastomosis in the treatment of carcinoma of the rectum. Two of the patients were Dukes' Stage B and one patient was classified as Dukes' Stage C. The postoperative course was uneventful. There were no complications and all three were free of tenesmus and cutaneous irritation and were continent of flatus and feces, with one to three movements per day.

Surgical treatment of primary hyperhidrosis. A report of 42 cases.

Forty-two patients suffering from primary hyperhidrosis underwent upper dorsal sympathectomy using the supraclavicular approach. The postoperative course and results were devoid of complications. All the patients except one were satisfied with the results of surgery, which greatly improved the quality of their lives.

Tracking of indium-111-oxine labelled lymphocytes in autoimmune thyroid disease.

Peripheral lymphocytes (approximately 10(8)) from 4 subjects affected by autoimmune thyroid disease (2 Hashimoto's thyroiditis, 1 primary myxoedema, 1 Graves' disease) and 4 normal subjects were labelled in vitro with 40 microCi of indium-111-oxine and, following autologous injection, the distribution of the cells in the body was investigated by gamma camera imaging. Lymphocytes in the thyroid were observed 24 h after injection in both patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and in the patient with primary myxoedema, but not in the patient with Graves' disease or in any of the controls. To our knowledge, this is the first report using this method to try and demonstrate lymphocytes in the thyroid gland, and supports the concept that cell-mediated immunity may be playing an important role in the pathogenesis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis and primary myxoedema.

Simple, geometrical model for a typical echinocyte III.

The purpose of the present work is to obtain information relative to the volume and surface area of echinocyte, type III, on the basis of simple, micrographical evidence. A concrete case has been examined as direct demonstration of theory and techniques of calculus.

Population genetics of red cell enzymes in Pygmies: a conclusive account.

In the course of a long-term research project, three groups of Pygmies and some non-Pygmy Central Africans have been examined for the following red cell enzyme markers: ACP, PGM1, PGM2, PEPA, PEPB, and PEPC, AK, ADA, and PHI. Several other red cell enzymes (ESD, CA1 and CA2, GPT, GLO, and DIA1) have been studied in only some of these groups. This paper reports all the information we obtained, including what we have already published. The following conclusions can be drawn from the whole body of data: (1) Gene patterns of Pygmies are those typical of other Africans (e.g.: lack of ADA2 and AK2 genes, low GPT2 gene frequency, polymorphism of the CA2 locus, and presence at polymorphic frequencies of PEPA2 allele. (2) Superimposed on this African genetic makeup, a number of Pygmy characters were identified, namely, a private polymorphism for the PGM26 Pygmy allele and possibly one for the PEPC2 allele, and particularly high ACPR and low PGM12 gene frequencies. (3) Some markers, especially PGM1 and ACP, turned out also to discriminate efficiently among different groups of Pygmies.

[Analysis of flexion energy variations of a human red blood cell, of ellipsoid form, in the process of deformation imposed by turbulent tangential flux].

The purpose of the present, morphological analysis is to recognize a functional connection between shear stress tau, which Human Red Cells, treated with glutaraldehyde, are subjected and their energy of bending (U), during the shape transition, turbulent shear-flow dependent, under the hypothesis of "isoareal" transformation. The experimental basis of this analysis is the work of Sutera and Mehrjardi.
