Ortholinea alata n. sp. (Myxosporea: Ortholineidae) in the northern butterfly fish Chaetodon rainfordi.

Ortholinea alata n. sp. is described from the northern butterfly fish, Chaetodon rainfordi collected at Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Spherical, disporous trophozoites (10-15 micrometers) and spores were observed in the lumina of kidney tubules and collecting ducts. Spores are broadly triangular with two short, broad processes that extend dorsoventrad from the posterior end of each of the two spore valves. Valves are bisected by a suture in the plane of the polar capsules. Spores are 12.6 micrometers (length) x 9.6 micrometers (width) x 9.9 micrometers (length), and at the anterior end contain two spherical, divergent polar capsules measuring 4.6 (4.1-5.1) micrometers. Sporogenesis is similar to that of renal Sphaerospora spp.; the intraluminal trophozoites of O. alata n. sp. correspond to pseudoplasmodia described for Sphaerospora spp. and no large, multinucleated plasmodia are formed. No significant histopathological changes were observed in the kidneys of infected fish.

An objective testing method to determine driving ability.

The pendular test was used to study turning sensations of aspirants with "physiological spontaneous nystagmus". A steering wheel was attached to the pendular chair and persons were asked to turn against the chair rotation. Chair movement, steering wheel and horizontal nystagmus were computer-analysed. The correlation between cumulogram of slow nystagmus phases and steering wheel rotations was evaluated and the value of the steering wheel and eye movement were calculated. It could be shown that the compensation of the pendular chair by the means of the steering wheel was symmetric in healthy persons in spite of the presence of spontaneous nystagmus. In patients with dizziness, no symmetric reaction was recorded.

Current hypertension management: separating fact from fiction.

In medicine, as in other fields, myths or speculations may be repeated so often and so widely that they are perceived as fact. To some extent, this may have occurred with regard to the treatment of hypertension, especially concerning the use of diuretics and beta blockers and the significance of their metabolic effects. An analysis of the available data indicates that the use of diuretics and, to some extent, beta-adrenergic inhibitors will effectively lower blood pressure and reduce morbidity and mortality. Similar analyses strongly suggest that the metabolic changes induced by these agents may not be of major clinical importance. The widespread dissemination of theories and speculations designed to convince physicians to avoid their use may have been overdone. Scientific facts, not extrapolations of data, should be used to make treatment decisions.

Creating a message for profit.

Advertising and marketing a medical group pose many problems and require detailed planning--but are well worth it. A medical group and an advertising agency chronicle their experience in forming a broad print communications program for the group, including the importance of knowing the target, setting a budget, and following up the program with market research.

Oncoselective transduction of CD80 and CD86 in tumor cell lines using an autonomous recombinant parvovirus.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to enhance selectively the immunostimulatory properties of tumor cells. Based on their oncotropic properties, we used autonomous recombinant parvoviruses to transduce the genes coding for the constimulatory molecules CD80 (B7-1) or CD86 (B7-2) specifically into tumor cells without transducing normal cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After infection of tumor cells by these viruses, surface expression of CD80 and CD86 molecules was assessed by FACS and enhancement of immunostimulatory properties was assessed in alloreactions with G-10 purified T cells. RESULTS: Infection of normal and transformed cells with recombinant MVM- B7-1 or B7-2 viruses leads to expression of costimulatory molecules only by tumor cells and confers on them the capacity to sensitize naive T cells in vitro. CONCLUSION: This approach should ultimately lead to selective expression of costimulatory molecules in tumor tissues in vivo without affecting normal cells.

Cervical cancer screening and demonstration projects to identify barriers to preventing cervical cancer mortality.

Cervical cancer screening and demonstration projects to identify barriers to optimal screening are discussed. Interview surveys showed that older women and women in low-income groups tended to have lower rates of Papanicolaou smear screening. Data produced by demonstration projects established by the Centers for Disease Control in collaboration with state and local authorities and private institutions will be used to design and implement strategies for increasing screening levels to further reduce cervical cancer mortality.
